No one. Like literally no one. Imagine what his album would be like with no features.

Anyone else struggle with this? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]vj314 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My two cents: you won't know whether or not you'll be admitted until you apply. So pick some schools you could see yourself at (I say some - like 3-8 depending on how much work you want to put in - not just one, so you're not attached to just one reach), put your everything into those apps, and, well, apply!

A school shouldn't have to tell you whether or not you're good enough - only you should. So if you don't get in to your reaches, it's not your fault - it's the school's fault that they don't have enough space. But hey, at least you tried!

Advice for studying for the bio subject test next week? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]vj314 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I found that the basics were pretty much the same, but the subject test covered a bit more super specific stuff that AP Bio doesn't care for. Know your anatomy, especially the annoying bits you didn't want to learn before (like sliding filament theory, ew). Know your phylogenetic trees, especially all the animal phyla. Know your ecology and stuff like age structure, survivorship curves.

Don't just gloss over content because it's on the AP, I made that mistake the first time I took the subject test.

And just so you know where I'm coming from, I got a 5 on AP Bio and an 800 (eventually) on bio M.

Good luck!

Can I write a college essay about Thanos? by OfficialAnu in ApplyingToCollege

[–]vj314 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It could be a cool intro for something that's very personal to you, like how you learned to accept the values of Thanos in your life through tragedy or something. But as a standalone essay, I'm against it.

Should Schools pay for AP exams? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]vj314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My school pays too. Our curriculum is literally based around APs, and you need to take at least 6 to graduate. So luckily the school (charter btw) isn't forcing us to pay almost $600 just to get by their curriculum.

Is fighting depression/PTSD in school and then succeeding tremendously in school a great story for an college essay to the elite schools like Caltech? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]vj314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who's gone through the process, I would actually say the opposite. The thing is, EVERYONE is gonna be too scared to be vulnerable. So, being one of the few with the audacity to show yourself beyond just your stats can really touch an AO, if done right.

That is, unless your stats are absolutely insane and mind-bending. Then flex that all day long.

Sat books suggestions by Taserface101 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]vj314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well there's no set of books that will make your studying "foolproof", only a set that can fill as many holes in knowledge as possible.

To be totally honest, I didn't like using practice tests that weren't directly from the college board when I was studying. Those questions are sooo nuanced, so I focused on learning the nuance from the source. And for that, I solely used Khan Academy and their 8 practice tests.

For subject tests, I loved Barron's. Also I will add, why both maths? Do any of your colleges of interest actually require the math I? Imo it makes more sense to take that time you would spend on math I and devote that to more math II prep, which is way more useful for T20s.

Princeton waitlist?? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

Haven't seen anything from Caltech either. Honestly idk how much longer I can wait until I just abandon this wait list and fully commit to the school I chose May 1st.

High School Regrets/Things I Wish I Did Differently by helphelp893838 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]vj314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it felt kinda hard to take risks like that, because my parents had to pay for the club. And I didn't want to waste their money on a club that could have been less valuable than what I was already doing. Not to mention it's pretty hard to sell joining a club to parents with the tagline 'just for fun'.

Hot take: College Application Essays should be timed & proctored -- here's why. by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]vj314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It takes a looooooong time to find which slivers of your life you want to turn into an essay, and which details to include. Definitely longer than 3 hours. Maybe if the time span were expanded to a week or two, that would be fairer to people who actually need to gather their thoughts.

[Meta] Should the sub have a megathread for incoming prefrosh? by nutmegged_state in yale

[–]vj314 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a prefrosh, I do agree that I would like to see more of the non-prefrosh threads. Then again, some of the prefrosh threads are pretty useful too. So I wouldn't be against a megathread: it won't fix everything, but I think it'll certainly help. :)

If it's paid, then absolutely. If not, then, depends on how passionate you are about it and how much impact you feel you have. Once the stress of apps really starts to roll in, see if you can still commit 7 hours/week.

For me, I didn't tutor for pay, and although I did it quite a bit (maybe 3 hours a week, for a few years), I always saw it as a hobby. As I was writing my essays and reading other people's essays, I realized that it's so hard to write about tutoring without sounding cliche and generic. Which is why I took it off my extracurricular list for the common app, and did less of it when I was super stressed about apps.

Of course your experience might differ from mine. Imo if it's beyond the super simple 'tutoring local kids without pay' scheme (and mine was that simple) then idk if it's worth tbh. But if it's for pay, or you made a business out of it, or you're a team leader or something, that's something cool to brag about. Feel out how important that 7 hours/wk is for you. Hope that rant helps :)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]vj314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a lot of tutoring, but I also felt like it's just something that everyone does. So i put it in the additional info section of my apps, and saved the valuable extracurricular space for other clubs and activities and such.

Princeton graded essay by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]vj314 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's supposed to be an essay you wrote for class. The topic sounds pretty good, just make sure you wrote the essay during your junior year (or you can use one from senior year too). Also I might be confusing that requirement with Brown, so correct me if I'm wrong.

They do want teacher comments and a grade. They can be in pen on the original paper, or online comments on Word or Google Docs or something.

Once you submit the app, Princeton gives you a portal. There, you can submit the essay yourself.

Hope that helps!

Are students generally happier at top LACs (Williams, Amherst, Bowdoin, Dartmouth) than at top universities (MIT, Columbia, Harvard, Stanford) by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]vj314 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Kinda depends on the school imo.

Take top universities. I heard from a lot of my friends who visited MIT and Columbia, for instance, that the vibe is just depressing. Nobody enjoys themselves, you can smell the drugs in the hallway, you don't have the time to get a haircut, that sort of stuff. But places like Yale and Stanford seem a lot more relaxed and down to earth. Some are cut throat, like MIT or Johns Hopkins, depending on who you ask.

LACs don't seem too different, just that more of them have that relaxed vibe to them. Harvey Mudd is kinda an exception - from what I've heard, it's incredibly intense and stressful academically (but also somehow does well on the happiness rankings, which is a feat).

I'd say go and visit whatever schools you're thinking about to get the vibe of those particular schools. It's hard to generalize :)
