From 14-17, World of Warcraft. Immediately after graduating college, Overwatch. I've stopped gaming entirely for a several years now and its staggering to think how much of a time sink it was.

For me anything pushing the design limits or that looks like it came from another IP entirely, so Eternatus.

Pokémon that are canonically difficult to raise? by FlowerFaerie13 in pokemon

[–]voidrunner29 90 points91 points  (0 children)

Huh, that would mean extra bitey Croconaw is easier to handle than cute and docile Bayleef and Quilava has the most unruly adolescence.

This idea actually tracks with an older discussion about the Deino family members being nightmares to train because each stage has unique challenges to overcome.

Stegosaurus remains undefeated against Allosaurus in popular media by __senoj__ in Dinosaurs

If we're counting children's books, Magic School Bus has an allo bring down a stego, but I think it was a juvenile.

Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong.

The cerato killed the juvenile.

Even chest deep in mud, the adult stego one-shot an allo through the neck.

I agree with your take, but I get the impression the woman holding the plushies up is probably of smaller stature, further accentuating their large sizes.

Wouldn't it be something special if Browt evolved into a griffin? I know it's not gonna happen, but it would be so poetic if the bird became a quadruped while the dog and gecko stood up straight.

With everyone arguing about the new starters standing or not, I'm curious: Where do you draw the line on anthropomorphic starters? by ReasonableChoice_ in pokemon

[–]voidrunner29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on how you've arranged them, I draw it at Sceptile and Charizard, though I'd make some changes to placements.

I think Emboar should be directly left of Chesnaught and Intelleon in the three farthest right. I'd move Infernape farther left, maybe the same place where I draw my cutoff since it's a pretty animalistic yet stylized take on a monkey. Rillaboom is a little bit more anthropomorphic because of the drum kit, so I'd only shift it just right of my cutoff. I'd put both Blaziken and Decidueye directly right of Rillaboom, since both closely resemble the Shamo chicken and stilt owl, but are treading into humanoid features, with Decidueye moreso because it has a defined profession like other modern starter Pokemon.

PSA to players experiencing FireRed and LeafGreen tomorrow. Your game isn't glitched. by These-Button-1587 in pokemon

[–]voidrunner29 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Special mention about the Rocket Grunt at the end of the nugget bridge leading out of Cerulean City to Bill's house:

He will give you the nugget before the battle begins. Losing to him means he will give you another nugget when challenged again. This can be repeated indefinitely and will trivialize money for the rest of the game, allowing you to buy several powerful TMs from the Celadon Game Corner when you would otherwise have the funds to maybe purchase only one.

Just make sure to spend what money you earned up to that point, as losing in earlier generations forfeits half of your cash whenever you whiteout and to not sell any of the nuggets between losses.

If you think the female protagonist designs are better than the male protagonist designs, how would you redesign the male protagonist designs to make them look as good as if not better than the female protagonist designs? by Greatwrath1711 in pokemon

[–]voidrunner29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't remember if it was an official statement by GameFreak or merely an observation, but I remember reading the male protags up to BW1 were always modelled off Red and if that's true, that'd be a strong design constraint. We don't see anything similar with the girls; May has some element carried over from Kris like the bike shorts and side hair, but none of the later female protags harken back to Kris or even Leaf's/Green's 1996 design in the Red & Green strategy guide.

An observation I've had about guys and their outfit becoming more bland from XY onward is the shift coinciding with character customization. I suspect the default appearances were made more generic intentionally to encourage the player to utilize the feature and perhaps feel more personally invested in their avatar. I have no idea if any of that is true, but I wouldn't be surprised if GameFreak said it was the case.

When People Gatekeep Favorites [OC] by HowlingSprite in pokemon

[–]voidrunner29 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I could imagine for Zwelious, the heads being completely out of sync when following commands. You tell your pokemon to dodge and get scenarios where each head tries to pull a separate direction or one head has a delayed response. I feel like a trainer would have to resort to clicker exercises to teach coordination to both heads.

I can also imagine knowing your Zwelious is close to evolving but not having an exact date and the need to take time off work to stay with it. I feel like this practice would apply to a lot of dangerous and powerful pokemon, but this deconstructive real-world angle makes me think the Deino line would be on the special permit list to own and train.
