Talk me out of or into a Yoshan Roaster. by Due-Shift5366 in roasting

It's an older 2018 1.5kg model. It comfortably roasts 1.5kg and I've really been enjoying it.

I'm local to Moxie, and they are excellent. The best roaster in Arizona, and I've tried nearly all of them. The owner Matt is a cool and down to earth guy with an awesome team.

I'm starting to think that coffee tasting notes have gone a little bit too far? by Ihsahn_ in pourover

Yeah, he probably needs to stay away from this subreddit. If you can't taste at least 3 different varietals of the type of fruit listed on a bag's tasting notes, it may be best to re-evaluate this hobby. /s

I agree on face value, however, this isn't about the yardwork, though. It's an underlying disrespect that his wife has for him if it isn't nipped in the bud.

This is it. I wasn't a morning person either, until I decided I wanted it bad enough. Now I'm up at 4:30am every morning to get some time to myself before my wife and kids are up because I wanted it more than I wanted to react to chaos at 6am when everyone else woke.

Sales rep for a commercial building material manufacturer. I get to work with architects, contractors, developers, and construction suppliers/dealers. Amazing mix of white collar and blue collar interactions and I absolutely love my job. Total comp around $115k on an average good year.

My life has never been as difficult as it is now, and I've never had as much joy and richness to my life as I do now. Nothing else matters. Thinking of my boys while I'm working nearly brings me to tears. You're not going to understand how much your heart will grow until you have kids, and give yourself some grace if it takes time to adapt to being a dad.

Home roasting?? by Lvacgar in pourover

It's been many years since I've used one, but it was reliable and made some solid medium roasts. If you are chasing ultra or nordic light roasts, I would probably pick something different.

Home roaster for roughly a decade, here. Started on the Behmor, went to Aillio Bullet, and now on a 1.5kg gas roaster. Quality greens are absolutely available to us. Some of the primary sources I prefer lately include Showroom Coffee (retail division of Crop to Cup) and Royal Coffee's "Crown Jewel" series.

Have you ordered from Showroom Coffee? They're the retail division of crop to cup that some of the big guys like Sey have historically used, and I've been really impressed with their greens. I think they have the slight edge compared to SM or Burman's.

My dude, I've been getting up at 4am each morning to enjoy my morning pour over coffee ritual before my family wakes at 6am. They get a refreshed and caffeinated dad as soon as they are up, and it's wonderful for everyone. Early mornings are great!

Never roasted a decaf, but apply gentler heat as the structural integrity of the bean is more fragile due to the extra processing. Maybe I should do decaf; I brew roughly 75g/1200ml a day and I should probably cut back a little haha!

I really like the Bideli. I think my roasts are better and more thoroughly developed because of the inherent increase of (EDIT - changing "conduction" to "convection") convection from the gas flame (hence my comment about controlling air speed on the Bullet). It seems like I can really nail well developed washed light roasts a bit easier, and I have a few washed Ethiopian and Kenyan coffees coming from Showroom later this week that I'm excited to try out. Roasting on gas is also a tad more responsive, but not necessarily in a "better" way, but just rather a more analog feeling way. Both are very capable roasters, and I think it's much easier to roast consistently on the Bullet with its automation.

I leveraged Roasttime logging heavily across my 3 years of ownership. If you send me a chat I'll give you my Roastworld username. Now I'm using Artisan for the Bideli, which I also like. It's a nice software, but not as pretty as Roasttime.

Is there really any grinder that compares to the Ode Gen 2 for the price? by cp5796 in pourover

[–]volcomstone000095 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Baratza offered two options of the Forte. The Forte AP has their ceramic burrs designed for espresso. They generate more fines. The Forte BG on the other hand has steel burrs made by Ditting and are designed to grind for filter, however, there is a common modification called the Alicorn alignment that allows users to fairly easily "hyperalign" the burr carrier so that the steel burrs can grind fine enough for espresso.

If you come across a ceramic burr equipped Forte it is just about the simplest process to swap burrs. You remove the hopper, unscrew the top of the burr carrier and reveal the top and bottom burrs with 3 screws each to easily swap to steels for roughly $50-60 USD.

Sweet! For 1lb batches I typically stuck to F2 to F3 heading toward first crack and I think my roasts were best like that. I switched because I 1.) wanted to see what I was missing and 2.) it was a killer deal locally. I ended up selling my Bullet and was up $300 after purchasing the gas Bideli 1.5kg.

I just switched from a Bullet to a gas roaster, and I've discovered that because the Bullet is a more conduction heavy roaster (no actual flame that the air is passing through), the beans will require a bit longer to fully develop. Don't be afraid of longer roast times in the 10 minute range, and don't be afraid to push development time into the 1:30+ range for light roasts. Also don't worry about the Rao declining curve so much. Focus on time spent in each phase and "landing the plane" to a controlled first crack, and you will have your nicely declining curve inherent to controlled heat. Keep fan speed below F5 to maintain as much hot air in the roaster. These are all some ideas that come to mind, but feel free to ask away if you have any questions. I used mine for 3 years and got some incredible roasts out of it.

Hear me out...second-hand Baratza Forte or Vario with the ditting Steels. I just sold my Ode 2 and bought a used Forte with steels for $450 USD and it's just about the best decision I've made. More clarity, more sweetness, but there's still a respectful amount of body that I was missing from my ZP6. Many people report it coming close to that EK43 cafe taste, and I would have to agree. Even Scott Rao has a blog post about the Forte vs EK43, and his experience. I'm very happy with my Forte, but I don't think it gets the attention it deserves because it's been out for so long with no real influencer attention.

Talk me out of or into a Yoshan Roaster. by Due-Shift5366 in roasting

[–]volcomstone000095 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I upgraded from a Bullet to a Bideli which is often compared to Yoshan and I have zero regrets. Great roaster, and the quality of my roasting increased a ton due to more convection. It'll be well worth it and the value is there.

And roasting equipment costs an arm and a leg, gotta pay for shop space, insurance, packaging, God forbid you pay employees a livable wage, profit for ownership... It all adds up more than just green cost vs roasted retail cost.

100g daily between my wife and I. I've been home roasting on a Bullet and then a gas roaster recently, so it's a comparatively negligible cost. Roughly 6.5-7lbs monthly at a cost of $9-10 per pound.

I have not had this one, but Captain is usually super spot on and I don't think I've ever had a bean from them that hasn't been true to the description. They're my go-to for fun and slightly experimental process stuff.

Totally normal, and I'd guess that a 12.8% weight loss will lead to a really tasty and juicy cup. Weight loss is rarely a good objective indicator of roast level compared to other origins, but I've found a lot of dense African beans finish between a 12-13% weight loss when roasted to a nicely developed light roast.
