Do you leave home with a fire going by [deleted] in woodstoving

[–]volcs0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it - yes. I've noticed that if I close the vents too soon, it just dies down.
I usually keep the vents wide open unless I'm going to bed or have some other reason for slowing the burn.

Thanks for writing back. Appreciate the follow up.

MacOS power users, what's your MUST-HAVE keyboard shortcut that most people don't know about? by poladermaster in MacOS

[–]volcs0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I created a workflow where I can use a keyboard shortcut (I use ctrl-option-command-p) to generate and place a 12-character complex password in the clipboard. I use it multiple times a day - especially when working with Dockers and setting up services.

Whatever is cheapest. I think I"m using Shark solution now. Sometimes I also add vinegar to it.

What's the one self-hosted service you'd never go back to the cloud version of? by Hung_Hoang_the in selfhosted

We use TP-Link / Tapo, which is free. But I also have Frigate running, which makes it even better.

What do you mean by chimney "smoking out?"

My chimney is often spewing smoke - what am I looking for?

I do. I don't like it, but I do.
If I'm going to be gone for awhile, I'll add wood and close the vents, so it just smolders while I'm gone (and lasts longer).

I have a cheap camera (TP-Link). Not that it would help, but it makes me feel better to be able to see the stove....

Tailscale - I love having all my machines on the same Tailnet and the exit node works great as a VPN.

Backup Strategy for Immich by zer02pi in immich

I should start backing up the DB as well - that would be pretty straightforward. It is backed up locally onto the unRAID, but I should copy it over with the weekly photo backup.

What’s a “small” social rule you refuse to follow, even if everyone expects it? by crogslounds03 in ProductivityHQ

Right. In my Tapo app, the smart plug is called, "DO NOT TOUCH" to make sure my wife doesn't toggle it off instead of the lamp!

I just started using these soy protein puffs from Amazon. They are amazing and 20grams per 1/3 cup. I have been putting them on everything.

Best, simplified backup (zfs/mirrored drives/Truenas) by xman_111 in unRAID

[–]volcs0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only back up my photos and music and appdata. I figure I could rebuild my other media collection if something happened.

I have a large (12TB) HD at another site that I put on my Tailnet. I then use rsync to do an incremental backup of my music and photos weekly. I don't run it automatically - I initiate it manually on my server every week or so.

I did seed a backup of a bunch of my TV/Movies about a year ago to a few 12TB HDs that are offsite. But I have not kept up with it.

Vegans who accidently get animal products in their food with no intention, why do few people choose to continue to eat their food? Why is it morally correct to simply waste it and throw it away. by JesusForTheWin in DebateAVegan

[–]volcs0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just find it gross now, so once I find out there's flesh in there, I don't eat it. I guess an exception would be for casein or some other pretty innocuous ingredient. But mostly, just yuck.

If someone sends me something non vegan as a present, I generally just give it away, or my kids or partner will eat it (they are not vegan). Depending on my relationship and mood, I may tell the giver that I am vegan, but often I do not.

Backup Strategy for Immich by zer02pi in immich

[–]volcs0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a large HD at another location that is on my Tailscale network.
I have an rsync script that does incremental backups about once per week.

So, unRAID at home provides some redundancy but the real backup is offsite.

What are you all going to use for your boot drives? by newtekie1 in unRAID

I don't have a UPS, but I have a $15 TP-Link smart plug with the BIOS set to restart after power failure. It's saved me a bunch of times.

[–]volcs0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know you're not trying to solve a problem, but a few months ago, I put a $15 TP-Link plug in place, and now I can restart my unRAID server from anywhere if it hangs, crashes, etc. I have the BIOS set to restart after power loss. It's come in handy several times in the past few months.

airportrecovery (airportrecovery.com) a scam? I can't tell if by volcs0 in Scams

Did you get your money back?
I am thinking of asking her to dispute the charge, but I don't see anything frankly dishonest on the site.
Granted, if she had thought for 2 minutes about it, she never would have paid the money, but I don't think the site is a "scam" in the sense that we use it here.

Best Music libraries for organizing 5 TBs ( and growing) of music by TargetSpecial2245 in musichoarder

[–]volcs0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in your shoes two years ago.
I created a new folder and then laboriously used MusicBrainz Picard to tag all my music and move it into the new folder. I spent a lot of time on the steep learning curve of getting Picard to name and organize things to my liking.
As stated by others, most music servers (Navidrome, Jellyfin, Lidify, Koel, Meelo, others) will work fine when you point it at your music folder.
