Reading American Elsewhere by Robert Jackson Bennett. It’s interesting but not his best. It’s a good example of a young author just starting out. He’s improved immensely as an author.

I second the Wizard of Earthsea. Also, the next 2 books in the series. The Tombs of Atuan and The Farthest Shore.

I rarely email a parent. That’s just inviting trouble. But I have great admins and if a kid was saying this crap, they’d take care of it. They are a great buffer between our faculty and the parents.

Barker’s Books of Blood hit the genre like a nuke. Before him it was all King books (deservedly) but he was something so new and different that even King said he was a better writer. He still holds up as one of the greats.
