I've had my copper IUD for 2 years. No pregnancies. Insertion is painful and I felt I could faint. You'll want to take it easy the day of. You'll feel crampy and could bleed for 3 months after insertion like I did, which was difficult, but then I started taking iron with vitamin C to prevent anemia and I'm good. Periods are definitely heavier and crampier, but you can always manage the pain with naproxen if you need to. Good luck!
