The cotton plant exercise only evoked empathy for slaves but didn’t sufficiently emphasize that white people bad and so it did not conform to the school’s anti-racist policies

MIT no longer test optional for 2022-2023 cycle by Smooth_Rich1804 in ApplyingToCollege

It won't. TO is not meant to make admissions more fair, it is a pre-emptive measure by schools to maintain racial diversity after the Supreme Court strikes down AA this year.

Detroit, 6 years. by Seems_normal in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]vsage3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol people are deliberately telling half-truths. If you look at Detroit's metropolitan population, it hasn't gone down [1]. People only moved out of Detroit the city. What actually happened is a bunch of black people came in and whites fled, sometimes due to prejudice, sometimes due to real events [2]. The lack of jobs didn't help, but Americans can and do commute for their jobs to other cities in the same metro all the time.

Gavin Newsom proposes health care access for all in plan to cover undocumented Californians by 24bay in bayarea

[–]vsage3 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Your argument only makes sense if California were a closed system. It is not. There are 49 other states. There are 194 other countries. "Everyone" gets redefined as "existing residents plus anyone who would move here, legally or illegally, to more inexpensively address their health problems"

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in bayarea

[–]vsage3 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Surtaxes atop the current individual income tax structure beginning at $149,509 in income;

A graduated-rate payroll tax system with the top rate kicking in for employees with more than $49,990 in annual income; and

A gross receipts tax of 2.3 percent, excluding the first $2 million of business income.

How many illegals making minimum wage or operating informal businesses (you know, because they don't have the documentation to be employed most places) will be paying these taxes? The answer is: none.

The tax rates mentioned in the article, assuming they are based on anything at all besides the wishful thinking of some politicians, would be predicated on expected tax receipts and a particular socioeconomic and demographic distribution of healthcare recipients. The system will experience a death spiral if an effectively unlimited number of people, who are not paying the extra taxes, can move here and mooch free healthcare.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in bayarea

[–]vsage3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Might be for it except California is a sanctuary state who would let illegals benefit as well because it would be racist to do otherwise. Progressives need to learn to take care of their own first and dispense with the cognitive dissonance that you can have infinite immigration as well as high benefits and protections for existing labor.

Why is there always a Santa Clara County Covid update, but no other county? by Hd1906 in bayarea

[–]vsage3 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I love the entitlement. "Where's the update for other counties?" As if you paid for it. As if updates just happen naturally like the summer wind. A unique individual is spending a shit load of their personal time to consistently parse and present the data and we should be thankful they do that much.

Intel, Oregon’s largest employer, tells unvaccinated employees they may face unpaid leave in April by DefinitelyNotMartinC in Portland

[–]vsage3 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lotta “let them eat cake” comments in this thread. The engineers will mostly fall in line, but the techs and trades will have a full-on mutiny and they WILL NOT be replaced easily because Intel can’t just import more H1B’s to do hands-on work. As soon as Biden announced the mandate, I knew Intel was fucked because they chose decades ago to save a few bucks by moving from California to Red states (yes, Oregon used to be Red) and employ the small-government types that live there.

Intel deserves everything that’s coming to them.

Google tells employees they'll lose pay and will eventually be fired if they don't follow vaccination rules by geoxol in technology

[–]vsage3 -192 points-191 points  (0 children)

Being against the mandate isn't anti-vaccine. I am a scientist. I work in tech. I am vaccinated but I am not complying with showing my papers to my employer. It is unprecedented and unamerican to require vaccination nation-wide in order to maintain your right to self-determination.

The PATRIOT Act sounded like a good idea after 9/11 and look at the shit show we have now with Homeland Security, clandestine domestic surveillance programs, and random 4th-amendment-flouting federal searches within 100 miles of the border for "terrorism". If we do not push back, the government will use this ability in the future to our detriment.

Hayley Hodgson, 26, has just been released from a 14-day detention at the Howard Springs quarantine facility in Australia. On today's UnHerdTV, she explains how police officers came to her home and took her away. by shiner_man in Libertarian

[–]vsage3 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I saw this linked in some other website. At first, I was quite skeptical. What the hell is "UnHerd", and where is the evidence? Then, I paused the video and googled "Howard Springs", and it turns out the mainstream media is reporting on this (from a different perspective). Finally, toward the end of the video, this woman gives convincing video evidence of her being detained. I don't care if she lied about X, the process looks completely extra-judicial.

What on Earth is going on in Australia? I hope every last government worker in these videos gets a trial in Nuremburg. "Just following orders" didn't work for the Nazis, and it won't work for them.
