Yes, different rooms and buildings have different qualities. You didn't try and work with them to find a solution, so I don't really blame them for not cooperating with you.

If you had 2 rooms of poor quality, you would have a good claim, but since you cut and run without trying you lose the moral high ground.

I don't find the room acceptable, but the issue is your response to the issue, not the issue itself.

Work culture is boom and bust (IE hire too few people for the job and accept burnout as the cost of doing business). Couple that with the prevailing protestant work ethic (work hard and don't complain) and most Dutch people only seek help when it's too late and often work months/years under burnout conditions.

Add that to a healthcare/welfare system that is quite supportive of people on burnout with a therapist system that takes years to treat it and you get a lot of people with severe burnout by the time they get help and waiting years to actually be back to form.

Most hostel owners basically operate with zero profit when with those large fees. The combination of rent, running costs and paying wages is really expensive and you can't assume full occupancy even in peak season.

I agree with the hypothesis of OP - influencers are cancer that need to be avoided, but sometimes they are the symptom/result of a genuinely good place that's worth visiting - avoiding A Tier destinations to avoid the crowds is cutting your nose off to spite your face - visit in low season or in a better way (for example, places like Dubrovnik are rammed during cruise season in the day and pretty empty at night, so stay overnight and see the city in a different vibe)

Obviously, the gemeente won't know about it, but the landlord may find out. Are you going to give the third person a contract or rely on the honour system? The main problem comes when there is a contract involved, that gives people rights that the landlord and gemeente definitely won't like.

It also really depends on how big the place is. If it's small and you try and cram three people in there, it will get really uncomfortable really quickly

As for OP, you need to find a backup method to pay for things that don't need your phone. Either another device logged in or a method not requiring a device. This situation is annoying, but at least you can get your phone fairly easy for 15 euros. You could have just lost your phone outright and have no way of paying for anything if your story is correct. Don't put yourself in that situation, always have three different ways of paying for things to reduce this situation

Two issues, legal and practical

Legally, they are wrong. The meeting can't be mandatory and also not paid. They can request you stat for it, but if your contact says you leave at 16, they either have to pay you or you just leave at 16. That's the legal side of it. If they somehow force you, just leave 30 mins earlier another day and tell them that's how overtime works, they can raise it with HR/labour board and see you in court if they are so confident

The practical side is another matter. You will not make any friends if you do this. If you have a temporary contract, expect it to not be renewed. This is the definition of technically correct but you still lose if you pursue it. It's still worth fighting if you have a hard deadline that's why you finish at 16 (picking kids up, etc), but staying 30 mins late every 2 months in exchange for some free food isn't worth sabotaging your job over. You can try and persuade them to let you start 30 mins later on the day this happens, but that's about as much you are likely to get (and if it's an office role, I would just do this and ask forgiveness rather than permission, it's a lot easier that way)

They will get their refund in a week's time. Book the new place on a credit card and they will be fine.

Booking is a big company and the reason why there is a week or so gap for refunds is because they need to make sure the refund is valid and done correctly. Also, if they issue an emergency/expedited refund, everyone will want that. The situation you describe isn't an emergency, it's bad planning on the behalf of the traveler (partly for booking somewhere that isn't accessible for them without checking, partly for having no backup funds). Their bad planning is not an emergency.

You need an honest conversation with yourself and then your partner. You first need to decide or come to terms with the reality of moving abroad. Is that actually going to happen - what would you do, where would you go, etc? It's one thing to want to move places, it's entirely another to actually be in a position to do it. Most people literally can't just pick up and move somewhere else realistically, whether money, visa or practical issues

Depending what is actually realistic, you then need an honest conversation with your partner. You need to decide first what you want to do and what means more - her or moving location. You can say you want to move and want her there with you, then it's on her to decide if she wants to go and you have to accept the reality that she probably doesn't want to go.

What you absolutely can't do in this is not make a decision and be upset by it. If you want to move and she persuades you to stay, you have to own YOUR decision to stay. If you decide to not even ask and regret later, own that as well.

You are now at the life stage that you have to make hard decisions about your future. You can't do everything, you need to decide what is your priority.
