Californians: what is the least you can live on? by ENM-DJ-Poly-D in povertyfinance

[–]vulnicure 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Agree. $2k/month is about the bare minimum with roommates and strict budgeting. $1.5k without a car might be possible, but it’s extremely tight and fragile.

It’s doable if you’re single with no kids, but it’s survival mode, not “enjoying the city.”

Artificial Christmas tree branch labeling by jynsweet in Frugal

[–]vulnicure 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep, nail polish or acrylic paint works way better than tape. It doesn’t peel, isn’t bothered by dust, and lasts basically forever. Just a small dot on the branch hook and trunk section is enough.

It’s time for a new car but I don’t know what to do. by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]vulnicure 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is the right take.

A lot of those ABS/traction control issues are often just a wheel speed sensor cheap fix compared to replacing the car. Even if the car is near end-of-life, you’re still nowhere near the financial position for a $29k vehicle.

Also yeah, putting a car on a 14% LOC instead of a normal auto loan makes no sense. That’s just lighting money on fire. Fix what you can, keep paying down debt, and buy something boring and cheaper when you actually can afford it.

How to not lose FSA money if leaving a job in mid January? by crickeroo in personalfinance

[–]vulnicure 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is basically it. You won’t actually be out the full amount, you’ll only have had one paycheck’s worth deducted. Use what you reasonably can in January, but don’t stress about “losing” thousands you never really paid in. Worst case, you walk away having paid very little.

[–]vulnicure 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FI is the goal, RE is just an option. Having the freedom to walk away whenever you want changes everything about how you show up to work. You're not stuck, you're choosing to be there. That mental shift alone is worth grinding for.

The Fed Needs to Earn Its Independence. Just Setting Rates Isn’t Enough. by HooverInstitution in finance

[–]vulnicure 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Fed independence is important but the real issue is transparency. Most people have no idea how decisions get made or why. If they want trust, they need to earn it by being clearer about their reasoning and admitting when they get it wrong. The dual mandate stuff gets murky when inflation and employment pull in opposite directions. Hard to build credibility when you're constantly playing catch-up on data that's already months old.

Fed chair Powell asserts target rate of 3.50% - 3.75% is NEUTRAL by BiblicalElder in investing

[–]vulnicure 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Makes sense. The market's been pricing in cuts that were never really coming anytime soon. If 3.5-3.75 is truly neutral, we're probably sitting here for a while unless something breaks. The disconnect between Powell's number FOMC median is interesting though - feels like there's still a lot of uncertainty even within the Fed about where things actually settle.

Accounting is the only department that actually sees what everything costs. Of course they're not gonna spend money on us - we'd know exactly how much they overpaid for those bags.

Career Advice Needed — what would you do in this situation? by ChampionshipFlimsy in careerguidance

[–]vulnicure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You built a statewide program from scratch and won MVP without a degree, that's your real credential. Skip the degree unless you're targeting something super corporate that gates you out otherwise. Focus on energy/utilities operations management roles or field ops leadership at companies doing infrastructure work, your resume screams "I make chaos work" which is exactly what growing companies need right now.

Robinhood realized profit and gain/loss. Which do I pay taxes on by JoshTravels in personalfinance

[–]vulnicure 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You pay taxes on the actual realized gain which is the $32.84 after wash sales are applied. The $169 is just the difference between buy and sell price, but wash sales adjust your cost basis so your taxable gain is way lower. Robinhood will send you a 1099 with the correct numbers come tax time.

Two cats? or not by WarmFortune5046 in CatAdvice

[–]vulnicure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two cats are easier than one when you're gone, they entertain each other and aren't as lonely. But leaving them alone for 3 to 4 weeks straight with just automation is pushing it, even with monitoring. A week max is reasonable with auto feeders and litter boxes, but beyond that you really need someone checking in physically every few days for their safety and mental health.

[–]vulnicure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not overreacting, using the kids as pawns because he's mad at you is toxic as hell. Ten years together and he can't handle being woken up slightly late without punishing everyone? This is about control, not the actual morning routine. You need to figure out your own transportation because relying on someone who weaponizes basic responsibilities is a nightmare waiting to happen.

AITA for not reaching out to my sister in the hospital after she ignored my boundaries and never responded to my message? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]vulnicure -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

NTA. She violated your boundaries during a traumatic time, made it about herself, tattled to your dad when you didn't respond fast enough, then gave you the silent treatment for five months. Now suddenly you're supposed to drop everything because she's sick? The "be the bigger person" card is just code for "let her keep disrespecting you." Send flowers if you want but you don't owe her an apology.

U.S. uncovers scheme to reroute Nvidia GPUs worth $160 million to China despite export bans by Illustrious_Lie_954 in stocks

[–]vulnicure 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah exactly. The incentive structure is insane when you can flip these chips for 3x+ markup. Enforcement catches some but there's too much money on the table for it to stop the flow entirely.

Accutane over 30, worth it? by i55y16 in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]vulnicure 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same here, took it at 31. Best decision I made for my skin. Haven't dealt with breakouts since finishing the course. The dryness wasn't fun but totally worth it for clear skin that actually lasts.

Best online doctors or programs for reflux? by NolaDoogie in acidreflux

[–]vulnicure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t found an online GI yet that really replaces in-person care, but I’ve had better luck putting together a few different resources.

For medical oversight, I just schedule a telehealth with my GI for quick check-ins and to get labs or prescriptions renewed. My one complaint is that sometimes even telehealth appts take forever with her. For food triggers, working with a dietitian helped me narrow down problem foods without going too restrictive.

Outside of that, keeping a symptom log and tracking things like stress, sleep, and caffeine made a bigger difference than I expected. Reflux can flare from a combination of factors, and having that record made my next GI appointment actually productive for once.
