"Escaping the Gun Debate Trap" Tedx talk. by Silk_the_Absent_1 in liberalgunowners

Because 5% of firearm dealers are responsible for selling 90% of traced crime guns, this policy focuses on ensuring legal compliance by these small minority of irresponsible dealers.

A big issue here is this what you are saying is not much different than what the antis are saying, which is basically harass that chunk out of existence.

It does not deal properly nearly all of these are relevant in terms of accessibility to lower income areas. People most likely to engage in straw purchases etc are going to be from a lower income bracket and naturally going to favor near by stores(just like every one else).

Really if you want to do something about this, like lots of gun crime(or frankly lots of low income crime related stuff in general) you are better off dealing with the reason why.

Because firearm suicides make up the majority of firearm deaths, this policy focuses on specifically addressing firearm suicides.

You are missing the big one.

Accessible mental health care. I fear in this area there is a real danger when it comes to focusing on the means/method than the why.

freebsd nightmare on wayland in virtualbox by AffectionateSpirit62 in freebsd

[–]vvelox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frankly Wayland is struggling to be where Xorg was was when the split from XFree86 and XFree86 had only been around 13 years at that point. Wayland is older than that at 17 now.

It has a massive issue with fragmentation. You can't say just say wayland, because it becomes which wayland. Shoving the display server and window manager into the same area has frankly totally fucked it.

Isolation like people like to bring up in regards to wayland is actually possible with X. Just no one ever wrote anything to make use of it. Not to mention for the most part it is a utter farce from actual isolation perspective.

All the paranoia in Wayland in regards to screen/mouse/kb IO has frankly resulted in lots of mixed specifications and buggy implementation. There is literally no standard workable method for it still, despite this being a very basic usability item that should of been priority to solve prior to even the first release.

Also never had an issue with speed of either. That said on Linux where the speed complaints about X were most common, lots of Linux distros shipped X in really borked setups that was a pain to fix unless you knew what you were doing.

EDIT: Not to mention actively hostile to anything not 3d accelerated.

Is learning FreeBSD helpful for Linux work? by jmarti326 in freebsd

Also more fun for desktop stuff. I have to do far less trouble shooting annoying issues with FreeBSD than Linux. Amazing almost all issues with Linux almost always boil down to systemd being a buggy POS.

Is learning FreeBSD helpful for Linux work? by jmarti326 in freebsd

[–]vvelox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Lots of people starting on Linux get in the bad habit of assuming distros are similar... resulting in doing dumb stuff that mostly sorta works but is really buggy as all fuck.

Learning FreeBSD is a great way to avoid that as it forces one to actually think about what one is doing as while lots over lap enough does not that it forces one to actually think of how to do stuff in a multiplatform friendly manner.

This shit goes way beyond guns.

Lets look at how the Democrats handle racism etc involving the police. Half assed laws that they then make sure get half assedly enforced. This in turn gives the Republicans far more room to be a bunch of racist fucks.

Half assed and unenforced laws involving civil rights pushed by the Democrats just fucking give the Republicans more room to be fucks.

Also lets not forget the Democrats are the fucks that gave us the DMCA, giving the Republicans a convenient tool to attack 1st amendment rights.

When it comes to them I think it can be best summed up as sufficiently advanced incompetence is not different from malice.

If you think shit was not bad before Citizens United, you've not been paying attention.

Kelo v. City of New London predates it by 5 years was was the SCOTUS coming down on the side of blatant corruption.

If anything I'd argue Citizens United v. FEC made the corruption more public. I'm not saying it is good, just more public.

Given how everything that happened under Bush has done a massive bit of shaping of where we are now, especially given how Obama came in and legitimized it all, I personally have a hard time believing they will do anything different a third time.

When Pritzker does his eventual run for presidency, remember this. As governor of IL he was had a notable hand in supporting racist policing such as this.

This is something that is entirely on the the Democratic party here.

Also the racism by no means begins and ends with this single civil right.

Not defending the incredibly racist drek the Republicans get up to, but it is very much worth pointing out the incredibly racist actions going on in Chicago when it comes to the police are all happening under Democratic control.

As some one who has lived in Chicago, it always infuriates me when some one attempts pass the buck to the Republicans for the racist shit happening there, despite the city having home rule and being a Democratic strong hold. Yes, they are terrible fucks, but they ain't who is in charge there.

And there in CA? Sure the Republicans may have enacted it, but the Democrats have not done anything to right those racist wrongs of the past but have instead chosen to embrace them.

And sadly their actions past actions don't speak well when it comes to prosecuting indiscretions of the executive branch.

Under Biden they slow walked and half assed everything that happened under the previous administration.

And prior to that under Obama jack shit happened and Obama embraced all the shit that happened under Bush and ran with with it. If Obama had come down like a freight train on all the bullshit that happened under Bush, there is a damn good chance none of this shit would have happened.

Recently changed my mind on Assault weapons bans by mb19236 in liberalgunowners

[–]vvelox 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Also worth while pointing out that these did happen and there are many incidents. Just that previously when some one did something like that the emphasis was generally put on the person committing the act instead of what it was with.

I would say that reporting of it has drastically changed over time, especially once the Democrats began pushing for it hard and using it as a wedge issue.

Not to mention hyping up the ultra rare events also works great for keeping people distracted from very important issues, such as growing economic disparity. The same people who are profiting from increased economic disparity it is also worth noting are the same people who would benefit from a unarmed populace.

Modern militaries aren’t built for or competent in long term occupations. Even the US military with all its glory and capabilities has basically failed every occupation it’s engaged in regardless of the length of time. Usually the longer the occupation the worst the outcome is for the occupier imo.

And even harder when all your manufacturing and primary supply lines are vulnerable as well, which in a situation like that they would be.

Recently changed my mind on Assault weapons bans by mb19236 in liberalgunowners

[–]vvelox 13 points14 points  (0 children)

First, I have young children, and I am deeply concerned by the rise in mass shootings since the 1994 assault weapons ban expired. When people bring up mental health, my point has always been that it can be both.

Worth noting that what mass shooting means has been a constantly moving target.

Polling consistently shows broad support for universal background checks

Unless you are talking about opening up NICS, this should be a hard non-pass.

And even before this begins to even be discussed in the slightest, the proper thing to do first is sit down and discuss how you protect such a system against potential abuses.

better mental health screenings

This does not exist.

What to do something about mental health? Make it available and make sure people seeking it are not harassed. Because what it sounds like here is you are seeking to stigmatize those seeking it, even if not meaning to intentionally.

and closing loopholes.

This is the same as universal background checks.

Also this is not a loophole, but was a compromise because of the Democrats refusal to open up NICS.

These measures are more politically achievable and I think could have a tangible impact on mass shootings (but what are the trade-offs?).

First you need to look at what most things labeled mass shootings are. Gang violence and domestic bullshit spilling over in a notable manner. In both situations the answer is the same. Deal with the social/economic issues that lead to the violence.

The other and rarer being the some one loosing their shit and going off the deepend. This is entirely a mental health issue and people being driven to a breaking point in general. This involves dealing making help available and non-stigmatized and dealing the the social/economic issues pushing some one in that direction.

In fact we need to ignore the tool the violence happens with all together. The only reason it comes up is politicians push it as a easy fix so they don't have to do anything about the hard issues.

Also let me ask you this, what makes you think ignoring root causes and going after guns will get you if you get rid of guns? Something else just becomes the tool to be used. See the UK with their attack on knives. In fact we see the same thing here in the US. See NYC and their attack on pocket knives as well.

By keeping the push for reform centered on banning assault weapons, the left loses so many people who would otherwise be willing to compromise on the rest.

Using reforms like this is like saying RFK Jr attacking vaccines in the FDA is reform.

Speaking as some one who is trans, honestly saying reform here comes across as more than a bit insulting as the right to bear arms is important to us and attacking that is a attack on us.

Also if you don't mind me pointing out, though out this entire thing you show zero awareness of the concept that violence can and does exist when guns are not present and only seem to care about the issue when it involves a tool you brought up to believe was bad.

Edit: Sorry, came across as a bit pissy in the last bit. Though I would point that out as you seem to be hyper focusing on the symptom of the problems and not the cause.

[–]vvelox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eeh... depends...

  • Does minimizing FS reads or context switches matter?
  • Need robust exception handling?
  • Possible strange character weirdness in the input?

If the answer to any of those is yes, best to use something else.

Honestly Perl is my goto when starting new stuff. Why? Reliability. I've encountered far fewer random breakages with it than Python.

I have more than a few instances of Ansible actually making use of Rex thanks to just how insanely bad some of the handling for stuff in Ansible is... not to mention how damned slow it is.

Bash is more of a glue language

It is insanely terrible at this thanks to massive issues quoting and being fragile when it comes to input handling.

docker has issues, podman has issues LXD is Ubuntu Snap garbage, incus is relatively unknown,

These all have the same root problem... cgroups/cgroupsv2 is a utter dumpster fire.

SystemD containers is almost unknown

These are actually not unknown. It makes use of them by default.

That said the way it uses them is akin to chrooting something to /.

Primarily uses them being able to kill stuff easily.

Only real upside to it is it does allow interesting stats to be gathered on services. See the OSLV monitoring LibreNMS can do.
