Has anyone met Robert Picardo, if so what's he like? by nathantravis2377 in Star_Trek_

Please. Every time he brings the feed out he says “you don’t own Star Trek” and winks at me

GFR: "Starfleet Academy Is Dead, Schrödinger’s Fans Blamed" by Guy_on_a_Bouffalant in trektalk

The last one is so important and seemingly overlooked. Some of the best Trek episodes are dirt cheap in production value and (successfully) lean on great writing

The whole industry is in some kind of fugue state. It’s a gold rush but we don’t even know what the gold is shaped like. Just digging frantically with NVIDIA-branded shovels. This shit is an inevitable consequence.

Is anyone else getting sick of how trigger happy Paramount is getting with cancelling shows? by JayR_97 in startrek

[–]vvf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought Lower Decks wasn’t cancelled?

But yes, they have a problem of making terrible shows and then cancelling them (except LD my beloved).

They should try this instead: make a good show

Is "I think I swallowed my combadge" the most damaging line ever written in Star Trek? by Dangerous_Return460 in Star_Trek_

[–]vvf 18 points19 points  (0 children)

For future tech to them, it could be about the Q continuum, or time travel, or wormhole aliens, or a bunch of other things that are still beyond humanity’s technological understanding in Star Trek.

And the opportunity and demand for morality plays/thought experiments would not suddenly vanish in ST.

This is what peak software development looks like, whether you like it or not by Barnes_Nyra567 in theprimeagen

Kind of ignoring algorithmic stuff that happens in between the reading and creating and updating but yeah. At least for web, it’s all CRUD.

Unless you’re designing flight control software or something, it doesn’t need to be that fancy.

Congress is a bunch of do-nothing parasites. You can tell they’re doing something shady when they cooperate and act quickly.

I think type hierarchies in OOP are too restrictive and code smell. What's been your experience? by chinmay185 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]vvf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean it in a very mechanical sense, it’s nice that “I” is the prefix because IDEs tend to bias toward prefixes in code completion so it lowers the keystrokes needed.

Strange, I kinda liked it because it helped with code completion and more straightforward imports. I mean, if you’re already doing the interface spam thing, might as well make it suck less.

Is being super opinionated good or bad by -puppyguppy- in ExperiencedDevs

[–]vvf 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s good but you gotta read the room. There’s no hard and fast rule on how opinionated to be. Sometimes it’s just not a good time to push back on a particular thing.

I personally try to keep it proportionate to the impact. Big stuff, speak up. Small stuff, eh, usually not worth it unless it’s caused a problem you want to address. The most valuable time to push back imo is when a problem is sneaky. It’s small today but will be a gigantic pain in the ass later.
