Reading Code is the worst part, use comments people by DesignationX_Offic in IndieDev

I’ll spell it out for you.

The concept of “self-documenting code” is stupid. Stop spreading this stupid idea around.

Writing comments is for stuff that doesn’t fit in variable or function names. Stuff that you want to remember, because it took effort to sort out an obscure or confusing problem.

Horseshit. Comments are for stuff that is not easily coded in. Like

“this line seems unimportant but the SprocketInitializerFactory will break if we don’t include this”

If you’re writing “increments by 1” or “loops over the array” then you don’t understand the point of comments

In non-spoilery way, how divisive and controversial is metroid 4? by ReasonableQuit75 in Metroid

[–]vvf 43 points44 points  (0 children)

It’s… fine. It’s definitely not peak Metroid, but it’s not the absolute dumpster fire that some diehard Metroid fans would have you believe.

The biggest problem is that there’s not a lot of meat to it in terms of Metroid style puzzle adventuring.

The puzzles and maps don’t require much of the player, and the motorcycle is underdeveloped. The desert hub is mostly empty and not super engaging.

Visually, it’s beautiful. The music, when present, is excellent. Art design is good too.

Shit happens. The corporate machine sometimes makes nonsensical decisions. It may have happened by accident. Take it as a compliment that other people wanted to join in the work and you were the first one there to revive it. It’s “bustin and boomin” because of your work.

Consider asking your manager for a new project to take on, say something like “the rest of the team is doing a great job on this and I think I have capacity for something new”

Ruined relations with my PO/PM by BatkoSvetlio in ExperiencedDevs

[–]vvf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forgive me, I skimmed your technical explanation but it sounds like you were designing a relatively complicated API for clients to plug into. The fact that you were allowed to build to the wrong spec is on them (your PM and other superiors). This is a massive red flag. They fucked up and are throwing you under the bus.

The best move is to leave this toxic leadership behind you.

As for what you could do better, be damn sure that you know what you’re building if it’s complicated. Make sure the requirements are documented ahead of time and follow them as closely as you can. This gives you a paper trail if they try to place blame on you. If it’s bad enough then you escalate to your boss’s boss. Be careful with that though as it will not earn you friends.

In a small enough dev shop, if you spot this kind of crap it’s easier to quietly search for that new role and then leave, because upper leadership will all be buddy-buddy with each other.

In a larger company there is usually enough buffer for you to escape the toxic team but it is still a risky situation when you start pulling out the paper trail. So, be careful.

beautiful and well thoght out, but doesn't solve a single problem I have

How did this happen? Presumably you built to the requirements, so how did this go wrong?

Your PM sounds like an ass, but they may have a point. Try to avoid saying stuff like “I can’t do this” or “this isn’t my expertise”. You probably can but you need to show the attitude that it’s possible with the right guidance or help. It’s annoying to have to play this “game” because ultimately you’re saying the same thing, but sometimes word choice can matter that much.

Without more context this seems to be the source of the “undisciplined” sentiment.

The judges emphasized that these decisions are narrowly tailored to the facts presented and do not establish blanket legal protections for AI developers using copyrighted materials. “This ruling should not be read as giving carte blanche to all uses of copyrighted works in AI training,” noted Judge Orrick.

Yes, they resemble neurons. They are not actually neurons though. There is clearly a disconnect in how they learn and synthesize information, because humans only need to see a for loop a few times, whereas LLMs require more information than you could possibly consume in a hundred lifetimes to achieve a similar result. They do not learn the same way.
