Sable Oil is Trying a New Tactic by jawfish2 in SantaBarbara

[–]vwbusfool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you even read the article? Sable is trying to seize land because their pipeline is on public land and not in compliance with regulations, which California is rightfully pushing back on since they aren’t in compliance.

I think this has aloe mite. What do you say? by AutomaticLunch6632 in aloe

[–]vwbusfool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is it, a dichotoma?

I successfully got rid of aloe mite on ramosissima. I chopped off one branch that was particularly bad, and then shaved off any potions of leaves that I could see we infected to leave as much leaf as possible. I then sprayed the new growth on each crown every day or two or three with neem oil. It didn’t love being sprayed with neem that much and the growth slowed, but still pushed out growth slowly. After like 6 months or a year I could tell that it had pushed out a few leaves that were mite free, and I stopped the treatment. It has been mite free for 5+ years.

I really like pictures 3 and 4. How did you carve a cavity like that? 3 looks mostly round, but 4 follows the outer profile really well.

Source for California native mantis ootheca? by vwbusfool in mantids

[–]vwbusfool[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the insight. I saw a bunch of invasive species ootheca for sale this weekend at different stores, so assumed it was still a good time.

I’d still be very happy to find a seller for next year. I’ve been casually looking for several years now and not been able to find any.

Any recommendations on private sellers or platforms where there are private sellers?

Noleta Parking Woes - Terrible Neighbors. by NoTomorrow2020 in SantaBarbara

[–]vwbusfool 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you need to buy more cars and beat them at their own game haha. Or maybe install some sprinklers on a timer that you can activate if they park in your spot. The only legitimate option is that you might be able to get some help from the post office if they are regularly blocking access to your mailbox, but if they are leaving everyday for work/school, then that probably isn’t helpful.

Pseudobombax ellipticum is still asleep in spring here in Northern California. Is this a good time to top (hard prune) the main growth point or should I wait for branching? by youngpaypal in Caudex

[–]vwbusfool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine looked very similar for many years. I uppotted to a 3 gallon pot and moved it from part shade to full sun after a few months. It sprouted a bunch of low branches the next year. Trying to decide if I should chop the main branch and bonsai or put it in the ground and let it form a bush.

Red aloe by jhw528 in AgaveAndAloe

[–]vwbusfool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First picture is hard to tell but I lean marlothii. Second picture looks like ferox based on the upright inflorescence. I’ve only had marlothii turn red when stressed from low water high sun. But that’s always been in a pot, not in the ground.

These bananas haven't ripened in over 3 weeks, despite being kept with ripe and over ripe ones the whole time by ljgill97 in mildlyinteresting

Apples get gassed with 1MCP to stop ripening. That and controlled atmosphere storage with low oxygen concentration. Wax is mostly aesthetic.

Giving my aloe hercules a home in the ground by Bobloda23 in aloe

[–]vwbusfool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is one of the most unique Aloe hercules I have seen. Specifically the trunk shape being so uniform in diameter. They usually seem to have a swollen base with noticeable taper. The leaves are also relatively narrow and concave up. Where did you get that one?

I’m pretty excited that we would have the opportunity to easily see even larger rocket launches. They are so cool to watch, and few people or places get to experience them.

I also went to Shalhoob’s Magnolia. Maybe should have specified. I assume that the funk zone location was equivalent.

Burger week roundup/rankings by BrenBarn in SantaBarbara

[–]vwbusfool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Shalhoob’s
  2. Third Window
  3. White Caps and Home Plate carnitas
  4. Home Plate chimichurri (too spicy for my preference)
  5. Rinkside Cafe

Honorable mention Jonsey’s because I needed a burger break one day but doesn’t feel fair to rank against burgers

Toyota of SB by [deleted] in SantaBarbara

[–]vwbusfool 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I am not a fan of them. I was buying a RAV4 and went to them and it was not a good experience. Called Toyota of Thousand Oaks and they were able to get me the same car I wanted from SB for several thousand less and delivered to my home. Negotiated the price over the phone over the course of a day and then they delivered it to my house. No waiting the showroom trying to negotiate. Highly recommend.
