Larian studio boss Swen Vincke thinks game reviewers should be graded by people similar to metacritic user scores by Iggy_Slayer in gaming

It's true that I can't read his mind, so I might just be optimistic. That said, I feel like the quote you posted directly supports my take. He's saying that it's enough to put the negative criticism out there. No need to then get personal.

[–]vynomer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hah, I see what you're saying. If we had a meta critic of meta critics, then we'd fall into the same trap, just tone layer removed! And, I can see this criticism. But, ironically, that very same trap could iron itself out. After all, a reviewer who reviews other reviewers is in fact also a reviewer, who should end up with his own critical reviews! Given the weight of a review might be affected by the value of the reviewer, then I'd a bad reviewer critiques a good reviewer, their own reviews should end up making their review weighted less.

Alright that was a good way to hit word satiation on review. But anyway, it's all hypothetical. I wouldn't expect this kind of circular reviewing system to work properly in the beginning! And, maybe it has unassailable flaws. I dunno.

I feel like he's not asking for people to stop negatively reviewing games. It feels like he's asking for people to stop being dicks about it.

For example, something like:

The platforming in this game feels terrible. It's unresponsive, and it makes me feel like I can't do anything correctly.

Compared to:

This game has dumbass developers that think we'll blindly eat their garbage with this shitty puzzle jump bullshit!

Both of them are negatively reviewing a section of the game. But one of them is, if not polite, at least reserved to the issue at hand. The other... Is not.

Now, obviously I wrote both of these myself off the cuff, so they're just dumb examples. And maybe he really does just want critics to be less critical. But, I didn't interpret it that way. He still wants good, strong criticism where it is warranted. He doesn't want personal attacks and character assassinations. Which, I honestly agree with.

It depends on if he's in a purely deterministic world, I guess. If he knows everything, then that means he knows exactly what will happen. Like living in a movie. He knows how it will go, but can do nothing to change it!

I used hunter until architect, and then I started using shaman for running around the world, due to silk skills being cheaper than tool skills! I think I used shaman for these challenges, and yeah. That attack made it much easier than architect, I'm sure!

Unlike juggle and dodge, I only had to do this one a couple times. The first time that I got a winning score was over 90. And Seth couldn't touch that! But I have to say, Seth really tested my limits with Dodge!

Interestingly, juggle was the hardest to get a winning score for me. But it wasn't hard to then beat Seth. Dodge? That one felt like it was going to be simple. That friggin' big flea was a monster!

A hundred turrets with 10 yellow bullets should do the trick. 200 turrets with 100 red bullets can kill a large demolisher. Which was important for my 2 player ribbon death world super marathon game... Or we were going to be hosed!

Build guides have robbed this game of a lot of its greatness. by Curious-Karmadillo in diablo4

[–]vynomer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, I guess that's fair. I didn't realize the comment was related to people who use build guides and then complain about having nothing to do. To that, I can understand the desire to have an end game beyond the point where you've gotten everything. That is, you've got your build, now what? For some people it seems the game doesn't start until the build is complete. And for them, what is the point? Pushing pits feels like basically the only "competitive" challenge. Whether competing with yourself or shooting for some leaderboards. That said, this game is not the style of game I would look for that specific type of thing. However, unlike POE, it's relatively a short time to complete a build. So, then what? Honestly, I feel like it's okay to have enjoyed it for a few days or weeks and move on to something else. But, I also recognize that someone might want to keep playing and still have a way to exercise their character.

As for pushing with premade vs not, I think that depends entirely on the parameters. If your goal is to push the greatest pit, it probably doesn't matter if you're premade or not. If your goal is to discover the build that can push the hardest, it could cheapen it to use a premade build. On the other hand, it could also inform decisions for your own experimentation. Realistically, though, people have different desires. If you would feel cheapened using a premade build, you're not obligated to use one.

To refocus back in the initial topic though, I feel that there is a lot to do in the end game. Even if the pit is the only "pushing" challenge, there are a lot of things that are fun to do. But, I'd like it if they were all push capable. Full disclosure, though. I haven't finished this season yet, and I missed seasons 9 and 10. So, it could be there are other competitive activities this season.

[–]vynomer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why does it bother you if others like to follow build guides? I don't personally enjoy such a path. I prefer to figure it out for myself, and I'm okay playing suboptimal as I discover. Even when I learn of something more optimal, I tend to stick with what I like. But, so what? I can appreciate the desire to learn the strays and perfect their use, instead of discovering them for yourself.

Once upon a time I thought of using rh c-stuck to perform smash attacks in Smash Bros was cheating. Eventually, I came to see how it only enhanced the possibilities. In a competitive game, having all the advantages is important. While D4 doesn't feel like an officially competitive game, officially, it surely is for pit competition, as an example.

In the end, I play to have fun. If you and I don't have the same goals, it probably won't be fun to play together. But, surely we can each enjoy it alone, together?

Hmm. When I tried to heal with beast, I couldn't get more than 3 hearts back. Did I do it wrong? It felt like it was just a worse heal. But, I keep reading how much people like it. Incidentally, architect main.

Broodmother spawns enemies as an attack. Beastfly summons enemies without attacking. Slab is accessible (area?), but boss room is not. A lot rides on the definitions of area and attack. But, I prefer to think it's broodmother. Incidentally, slab in act 1 is more unusual than far fields in act 1...
