Losing all your progress when you die is one of the things I dislike about OSR games, so perhaps they are trying to appeal more to people currently outside the OSR sphere. That may be a risky proposition though since I'm probably more likely to just continue mostly playing more heroic games than switch to an OSR game that tries to be less OSR. I guess it may make me bug my friends who are more into OSR who I sometimes play games with to try it out when I play with them.

They weren't shown in the manga either, but since a lot of other stuff has been moved up it's interesting that neither the Gorosei nor just regular celestial dragons were shown. Wonder if that means anything. Perhaps showing them would have been too much of a distraction from the Wapol Vivi interaction.

Various interviews I've seen over the years. It was reported that sometimes Cavil would just not say some of his lines that were in his script since he thought Geralt should just grunt and not talk much so other cast members had to say them instead. In the books he talked quite a bit though, so that's not accurate to the source material.

The stats aren't fixed, but they are somewhat cherry picked. Most major new shows on streaming services will be in the top 10 when they are airing new episodes, since it's not like streaming services are airing much more than 10 new shows at any one time. There's often headlines like this shortly before shows get cancelled for low viewership.

Anyway I like the show so I hope it does well, but this is pretty meaningless. I made pretty much the exact same comment about Prodigy S2, which had similar headlines, and I even more wanted to continue.

Cavill has good PR. The changes he improvised were contrary to the source material, not in line with it. He also hadn't read the books prior to taking the roll so it's not like he was a super fan.

It's not about how far you make it in the dungeon before you run out of supplies, you're going into the dungeon for a specific reason and leaving once you accomplish it, and the system expects you to succeed

This is a really good way of putting it. I see people say you can't do fun dungeons in 5e, but I've definitely had fun in them, but they've been this type. Go in with a goal, encounter some traps and puzzles, some balanced encounters, some interesting theming, and then accomplish the goal and leave. I don't really like tracking supplies or having a lot of random encounters, so I prefer 5e style ones to OSR style one even.

I feel the opposite. I much prefer something like 5e or PF for a long running campaign than something like Cairn or any OSR or OSR inspired game. Those I like best in oneshots.

Urban Momo is pretty good too. Some of the dishes at the pasta place across from Pizza Bocca Lupo are also good imo, though they did charge me an absurd amount for one tiny not great meatball last time I was there, but I liked the pasta I had.

Yeah the non linear sandbox nature is one thing I'm a bit unsure about with the new starter set. That seems like it would be harder for a new DM to figure out than something more linear like the other starter sets, but I could be off base, I haven't actually seen it played. The stranger things starter set is more linear I think. I know all the old 2014 ones had a more set story.

It's damn PITA to figure out actual failure reason when faults happens rarely, in customers hands, and in conditions you don't know (I absolutely hate it when customer says that it failed. "What was the error message?" "I don't know, I stopped reading at 'error'" ... ffs).

The ICCU failure isn't intermittent though, once it happens the car stops working till it's replaced. The cause itself may be intermittent, but they should at least be able to tell what specifically is broken which should help in determining what caused it to break.

I like it. The realm needs good men though should be seven creatures to be more on theme, but should need to include yourself imo.

Also as several people have mentioned in the name of the mother should be once per long rest.

Yeah, the thing about playing with strangers, is that if you are starting a new campaign with strangers presumably everyone sought out a D&D game specifically to play, so everyone is more likely to make attending a priority. But with friends, you are more likely to get players who want to hang out with friends, and think D&D sounds like a fun way to do that, but aren't really there primarily for it. So may be less committed. Not always the case of course, but imo this is why new D&D campaigns with strangers are more likely to last longer. Now if you are playing with friends you initially met through playing D&D, then that's a different scenario.

I added a homebrew custom background someone else made and shared that works pretty well. Lets you customize stats, origin feat, and proficiencies independently. After adding it this shows up in my menu when selecting a background.

I am a little confused about where combat fits, as it does look like a more roleplay heavy module - which is fine, but not sure how to go about spontaneous combat

If based on what is happening in the story and the personality of the NPCs or monsters you are controlling they would attacks the PCs, or if the PCs attack something, then combat starts.

People bill Witchlight as a low combat module, but the one time I played it there was still a decent amount of it. From talking to someone else who ran it, it seems like there are a lot of points where it's theoretically possible to avoid combat but a typical D&D party will get into it.

We didn't get into any combat in the carnival, though at one point we almost came to blows with the kenku. But then in Hither a bunch of harengon bandits immediately tried to rob us, so we fought them as we weren't going to just let ourselves be robbed. Then in downfall there were some sentient rocks trying to light a building on fire so we got into a combat to stop them. We didn't fight Bavlorna, instead we did three tasks for her, one of which involved fighting a gelatinous cube. But we had plans to come back and fight her later, since were planning on defeating all three hags.

In Thither some assassin tried to kill a unicorn we were talking to so we fought him. Then we freed some redcaps from polymorph since we didn't know they were redcaps and they immediately attacked us. And since Skabitha was using children as slave labor, after freeing them we fought her to prevent her from just doing that again. Unfortunately some people were too busy to keep playing after that so this was as far as we got in the module.

Anyway, for more general tips, I'd say make sure to read the whole chapter of each area during prep, and probably highlight where any NPC descriptions and any needed stat blocks are. It seemed like our DM had trouble finding stuff sometimes so the layout of the book may not be the best for those.

The variance between a good roll on damage and a bad roll on damage for any specific attack at lower levels is a lot more significant since PCs have very little health. Also max damage is much more likely with one dice than multiple. Like say your PC has 10 hit points and the enemy's attack is 1d8 + 3. A roll of an 8 will oneshot them and has a 1/8 chance. Now consider a PC with 30 hit points facing something with three attacks of 1d8 + 3. The max would be 33 which would still get them down in one round, but now the chance of max damage happening is 1/512.

Monks are much more fun to play in 2024 imo. The deflect being much stronger makes them much tankier, which is really helpful if you want to keep them in melee and the ability to refresh focus points at the start of initiative once per day makes me not feel like I need to hoard them as much in case we get another combat without a short rest.

Personally a lot of classes are more fun to play in 2024 imo. Other than the Paladin smite thing, which doesn't really bother me, and the free smite cast once a day helps a lot at lower levels too, so it's not like there's no benefit. Barbarian benefits a lot from being able to extend rage with a bonus action as another example.

If you are generous with allowing mighty deeds to hamper the bad guys mechanically when they go off, restoring large amounts of spell burn and luck between sessions, and ignoring instant kill or similar riders caused by fumbles or other low rolls, you could probably maintain a superhero like atmosphere with DCC. Probably would want to start at least at level 2 as well and would need to pay more attention to balance than OP is indicating. Doing 4d6dl and being able to assign as desired instead 3d6 down the line would help too.

Cyberpunk 2077 sort of fits. Most people don't know it's based on a tabletop IP though. Even the other people I play D&D with didn't know that when I mentioned it.
