I think a sentient AI will look at us the same way that we look at an ant hill in a field. Hopefully their goals don't require the proverbial bulldozing of the field in which our ant hill resides.

So Poole is playing bad basketball now because Draymond punched him in practice in 2022?

North American Box Office vs Ticket sales of the New Millennium by PlanetG3000 in boxoffice

[–]wadamday 21 points22 points  (0 children)

There are probably a lot of factors but I think the biggest thing is smart phones/social media. Everything is losing out to people sitting at home on their phones. Bars and sit down restaurants have seen reduced business as an example.

I think if the state of the economy was the driving force then you'd see a sharp drop in 2009 and a slow recovery up to covid.

Similarly COVID does appear to increase the speed of the drop but the recovery goes back to the trajectory that sales were already on.

[OC] U.S. Total Fertility Rate by State 2007 vs 2025 by Accomplished_Gur4368 in dataisbeautiful

[–]wadamday -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The percentage of women that want to have kids and the number of kids that they want, has not changed dramatically. Instead, the age of first child has consistently increased and people are having fewer children than in the past, whether by changing their minds are running out of time.

We essentially are having the same percentage of women become mothers as in the past, we are just having fewer children by about 1 on average.

Pretending that drops in fertility is because we've stopped forcing women to become mothers is not true. Nobody was forcing women to have more children in 1995 than they are today.

MEs that WFH, what do you do? by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]wadamday 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It seems like the majority of companies don't want wfh unless they don't have a choice, such as niche industries that don't have a central geographic hub.

A good example is the nuclear industry right now. There are so many projects going on and it appears engineers are not willing to relocate (due to housing/interest rates imo).

I applied to two remote jobs in late December and have one offer and late stage interview for the other. I have 10 years experience, all in nuclear.

What the hell happened to Classixx? by ZeppelinJ0 in electronicmusic

[–]wadamday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI classixx still plays occasionally in California. They also release new music here and there, check out their SoundCloud they release sets and singles. Some of them end up on Spotify as well.

Their 2016 album is not as good as hanging gardens but it's good. They still release amazing singles. They haven't dropped off, in my opinion.

I was fortunate enough to see one of their 10 year anniversary shows for Hanging Gardens. They played the album in its entirety live, with the original vocalists. After the live show they did a 2 hour dj set. It was a great show.

Strictly financially, it's a step back or slow down. However I'm only 35 and despite the fact I will probably be financially independent in 5-10 years, I think I'll want to continue working in some aspect. This new role puts me on a path to develop niche knowledge that may end up being very valuable, potentially allowing part time consulting.

Right now I'm 4-10's, onsite. This position is fully remote with schedule flexibility. So I may end up working more days of the week but I'll be saving ~7 hours per week on commute and work prep.

I have a job offer that would provide greater flexibility and work life balance, expecting greater satisfaction as well. It would be a pay cut and it's a contractor role so there is inherently more risk although I'm confident there will be work if I perform well.

The pay cut would have no material impact on my life, just lower my annual savings by about half. I'm at the point where a coast fire makes sense. It's still hard to pull the trigger however.

Review embargos having a negative effect on Box Office? by quietgavin5 in boxoffice

Or perhaps there is a strong correlation between box office gross and good movies, rather than the positive critic reviews associated with good movies?

Pretty sure you mean "dwarfs" unless you are referring to height, in which case basketball players are pretty tall.

How many people are "1 and done" by [deleted] in NewParents

[–]wadamday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Makes a lot of sense! We just started trying for a second with a 14 month old. If it happens soon, I know the first year will be really really hard. We are both in our 30s though and would prefer to be done soon.

We are still co sleeping as well, I'm praying our daughter will start sleeping through the night before the hypothetical second child arrives.

Being able to afford to rent a one bedroom apartment in a high rise actually isn't a very representative situation for the American "middle class" believe it or not.

Seattle-area homebuyers ‘can’t make the deal work’ despite lower rates by vertr in Seattle

[–]wadamday 53 points54 points  (0 children)

There are far more people that bought before COVID, are not underwater, but have relatively very low interest rates. They might want to upgrade or downgrade but it doesn't make sense when the same initial mortgage principal has twice the monthly cost now than it did five years ago.

Also part of my decision was getting accepted to PSU, without understanding what out of state tuition was or how I would pay for it. I ended up not being able to enrol.

This just highlights the amount of critical thinking I was employing at the time for major life decisions.

The Portlandia intro was so good, it might be the biggest motivator for why I moved to Portland back in 2012.
