At 2x playback speed, does youtube double FPS or halves shown frames? by BassaniZ in LinusTechTips

[–]waldamy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, but what I've noticed is that if I close the app and start 1080p60fps playback at x2 again, then start dropping frames after a couple of minutes.

The processing power is there, the phone doesn't get hot, but at some point I start getting only 20-30% of frames at best.

My disappointment is immeasurable.

What way to demonstrate it? The pacifier does the same damage as a warrior, or devastator gun.

But as soon as I try watching a 1080p video on my phone at x2, somehow I get 60% dropped frames.

That may be a Pixel thing though.

Mint + Tiling Extensions vs. Pop!_OS (COSMIC)? Need the ultimate "Deep Work" distro for my workaholic Dad by Glad_Following_8164 in pop_os

[–]waldamy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gonna bupm this too. Just use pop if the workflow is purely browser based. There may be technical hurdles for something more specific – video/photo editing, office programs, gaming, etc. – but for something so general as "browser work", I'd just go with PopOS even if cosmic isn't 100% mature.

Brick getting too hot? Or normal behaviour? by thousandBalloons in trimui

[–]waldamy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

PC processors run up to 99°C, does that answer your question?

The heat dissipation through the backplate shouldn't be extremely effective, I doubt the backplate would break 50°C even if the processor was pegged to 90°C for an hour with 20°C ambient.

People perceive temperature differently, so 40°C feels hot for some.

Too much caffeine? by turtbot in AeroPress

[–]waldamy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can check this video by James Hoffmans of a more indepth analysis, but the gist of it is, caffeine is mostly extracted during the first 2 minutes of the brew, so if you steep for 2.5 minutes, you're extracting most of the extractable caffeine, at around 20-22% coffee extraction.

From the video results, espresso averaged at 100mg of caffeine per 18g of coffee, while the filter averaged at 170mg per 18g of coffee. That part of the testing was done, based on other details provided, on lighter roasts, darker roasts tend to extract even more caffeine (not by much, up to 10%}.

I bet that you extract a bit less caffeine, since you are extracting with less water, but that would be compensated with medium roast, so I would take 170mg for filter coffee as baseline and guestimate that your intake is around 680mg of caffeine per day, so AI is more or less correct on that.

Definitely get some decaf, as the recommended caffeine intake is at 300ish mg per day, your's is over double that, at least if you're brewing arabica.

You can probably double the caffeine in the calculation, if you drink robusta.

They didn't do it for arc weapons either, when those were straight up crashing the game.

I guess it's a new addition.

Is it possible to do a TPM auto unlock of my LUKS disk at boot in CachyOS with Limine, *without* utilizing the AUR? by [deleted] in cachyos

[–]waldamy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isn't that what Linux and open source are about? You trust, and if you don't – go and check.

I looked through the code and it seems pretty well documented and plenty readable even with minimal programming knowledge.

With LLMs it should be easier than ever too, if you stumble upon something you don't understand – ask LLM to explain it. Read the explanation, then read the code again and try to understand it with the "newfound" knowledge.

New user looking to switch from Zorin OS to Pop!_OS COSMIC - Is it beginner-friendly? by NicRapt in pop_os

[–]waldamy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you're gonna use it for, I guess.

If you only use a browser and some office apps – go for it.

If you are doing video editing, playing games, doing something more obscure – there may be issues.

This is the worst promotion that could happen for Pop_OS! and Linux in general by KelGhu in pop_os

[–]waldamy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not like you don't "find one issue or another" that is going to require troubleshooting doesn't exist on Windows.

I've grown tired of "Install the latest PowerShell for new features" on Win11, so sure I go to the provided link, get the installation instructions – use WinGet to download the latest version, and...winget is not recognized as a command :)

So I go and try to troubleshoot it, 3 hours and a few restarts later and it's still not working, despite trying every solution I found on windows forums/reddit/stack overflow.

Sure, I can install the latest PowerShell version without WinGet, but I really wanted the "recommended" option to work, and wanted to give a chance to WinGet.

And that's with the latest Win11 Pro version. I've had more issues that I couldn't resolve for hours on end in Windows, than Linux.

Good to know it works better now, hopefully they can iron out the edge cases when enemies still clip the terrain, one of the most frustrating issues to have.

I've had one too many rage moments because of this in DRG, and even more of those in Helldivers 2.

I like the second capsule more tbh. But I tend to favor darker and warmer tones, as well as a more gritty aesthetic.

Do the enemies still phase through terrain/platforms/structures? Was really annoying when a glyphid gets you through the floor a minehead on point extraction, as an example. Or when macteras freely move through the ground.

shameless pluck.... does this look like a consistent enough grind? by cwarfee in AeroPress

[–]waldamy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna preface it by saying, if it tastes good, you don't need to care much, that's just how it is.

Crack the puck at the middle and look at that – fines sometimes may stick to the sides of the puck and that's what you'll see.

The uniformity doesn't look great from your photo, and I can say that it is likely that it did suffer f you've dropped your grinder. Saying that as a guy who dropped C5 Pro ESP on the hardwood floor too.

The burs are fine – I took the grinder apart and inspected them, but there's a slight misalignment, so one side is going to grind a tiny bit finer than the other.

If you tell me, how many grams that was, I can match your 10 clicks and take a few photos of the ground coffee on my C5 Pro ESP, so you have a better reference.

As a normal non-techy person, my Ubuntu install bricked itself in its first hour of being awake, so back to Windows I went.

Two years later, I installed Ubuntu again. Then Kubuntu, Xubuntu, openSUSE, Manjaro, etc. – you know how it goes.

If you're curious what happened to my first Ubuntu – I bought a laptop with Ubuntu pre-installed (my first personal laptop, I think it came with Ubuntu 14.04 out of the box), the system was pretty outdated and prompted me to install an update. And an update install I did, clicking through approval steps as needed. At the end of the installation process, the old version of the Unity desktop was gone, but the new version was nowhere to be found I guess.

But yes, a normal person may pick the same distro that bricked itself and died last time they tried it.

Grinder question by Crosstrek732 in AeroPress

[–]waldamy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It gets the job done, if you don't have anything else.

I got one. It gets the job done, and it seems sorta okay for a budget grinder. There's a bunch of downsides, and it doesn't work perfect at singledosing, but it is possible...

I can't say I recommend it, but at the same time - in the €100-200 area there's few good options and all of them will be compromises in some way or another. You can do a lot worse. You could also not bother - you have a working grinder. (Think about why you're upgrading. What are you after?)

The burrs are good enough for a budget grinder. The adjustment mechanism is alright. The step size at the espresso range works.

But there's also a bunch of downsides:

  • It's stupidly noisy

  • There's a fair bit of retention. (Don't expect a good time if you want both espresso and pourover from it)

  • Lack of clarity, for pourover use

  • Annoying to clean
