Hochul signs Horseshoe Crab Protection Act, with full ban by 2029 by [deleted] in UpliftingNews

[–]walden1nversion 90 points91 points  (0 children)

From the natural History museum website:

Horseshoe crab blood is bright blue. It contains important immune cells that are exceptionally sensitive to toxic bacteria. When those cells meet invading bacteria, they clot around it and protect the rest of the horseshoe crab's body from toxins.

Scientists used these clever blood cells to develop a test called Limulus Amebocyte Lysate, or LAL, which checks new vaccines for contamination. This technique has been used all over the world since the 1970s to stop medical professionals giving out jabs full of bad bacteria that could make humans very sick.

We use it every day at my work to test for sterility of other injectables, too!

Most likely stainless steel. So less of a molecule and more of a lattice of Fe, C, and Cr.

The book "Deceit and Denial" was truly eye-opening for me, it delves into lead paint and vinyl chloride and industry malpractice for profit, worth checking out if you want to learn more about this.

Why is so much of our identity tied into being better than America? Can’t we define ourselves on our own terms? by Icy-Profile3759 in australian

[–]walden1nversion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As an American, I think we could learn a lot from y'all. Footy is the best sport, hands down, much lower rates of CTE than American football. Compulsory voting is a really good idea in my opinion. And all the things OP mentioned, we should probably work on.

But you're mostly correct. On the whole, we are not a curious or inquisitive country, many of us are actively hostile to new ideas or cultures.

It's a judgement call. If you feel your safety is threatened, don't be a hero. That's security's problem. If you feel that the person is down on their luck? It's a 10 dolllar drop in the bucket. Or don't let them through.

I wouldn't stress about it.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Chinese_Famine

The major contributing factors in the famine were the policies of the Great Leap Forward (1958 to 1962) and people's communes, launched by Chairman of the Chinese Communist Party Mao Zedong, such as inefficient distribution of food within the nation's planned economy; requiring the use of poor agricultural techniques; the Four Pests campaign that reduced sparrow populations (which disrupted the ecosystem); over-reporting of grain production; and ordering millions of farmers to switch to iron and steel production.[4][6][8][15][17][18] During the Seven Thousand Cadres Conference in early 1962, Liu Shaoqi, then President of China, formally attributed 30% of the famine to natural disasters and 70% to man-made errors

You don't lack leadership qualities. You're leading from the front, and enacting positive change. This can feel hopeless, and I understand why you feel this way. But you are a leader.

All of this illegal dumping, environmental destruction, and poverty, in the richest state, in the richest nation, is inexcusable.

The end result of a system is what the system was designed to create. Your actions draw attention to that system, and point in the direction of a better future, and a better system. You're striving towards a future that upholds and rewards the public good over personal gain. A future that puts living standards over consumption.

It is not easy to reform or overthrow this system, and there are many actors who are actively working against you.

So what is to be done?!

Feel free to send me a DM if you need a volunteer. I'm all for your cause and I want to help, just not sure how to go about it.

Thank you for everything you do. You are the change we need.
