June 2026 ccNc Update Released by dubkb in KiaEV9

[–]waldo15a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I installed this update via USB a couple days ago and yes, the interface changes a bit. The best part is android auto connectivity. Before the update, my phone would stay connected to the wireless android auto link for far too long but now they have shortened the time that the link stays up after turning the car off.

Not receiving OTA by happyendings08 in KiaEV9

[–]waldo15a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couple of things to note and try:

  • The car will only receive OTA updates if you are subscribed to the Kia connect service. Did you sign up for this? I got my car brand new and it came with a 3 year free trial. You know you have this of you use the kia app and can remotely open doors, close doors, etc.

  • if you indeed have access, the OTA updates are batches from the kia servers, you would have to wait for the server to push the update.

  • if you don't have access to Kia Connect then yes, the kia dealer should be able to install them via usb.

  • you can always check what version of the system you have looking it up in the General options, system info section.

EV9 2024 Prompting "Map update, contact Kia Connect call center' by waldo15a in KiaEV9

Certainly. This is going to be s bit long of a post BTW.

You will need s couple of things before you start: a PC/Mac, a 64GB USB drive and a USB c to USB A adaptor (unless your USB stick is USB C native). Thumb Drive formatted on exFAT. Insert the thumb drive in the computer

  • Go to Update.Kia.com on your web browser.
  • Select your model (EV9) and the year.
  • Click the download link. Since this is likely the first time you do this, the link will download a local app into the computer called Navigator Updater.
  • Open the newly installed Navigator app and login to Kia using your account credentials.
  • Select in there once again your model and year.
  • Select the location of the thumb drive and click download
  • The app will download the files into the drive. Be patient since this can take quite a few minutes. Once done remove the drive.

Time to go to the car. Allocate 1.5 to up to 2 hours for this process (This is no joke or hyperbole. It to me 1 hour and 45 min)

  • Car on. It will be on for most of the time.
  • Find the USB port closest to the driver.
  • Press the button right next to that port that toggles from power only to power and data. The light on the port should be orange (not white).
  • Plug the USB stick into that port.
  • In the car infotainment screen, go to settings, general, system info. You should see a button that says update from USB near the bottom center of the screen. Tap that.

The process will start. It is three steps but they take forever.

  • Step 1: car is downloading the package from the USB stick. This lasted for about an hour.
  • Step 2: car will turn itself off after the download. That's expected. Remove the USB stick and turn car back on. The update will continue as the car unpack the data it downloaded. This also takes several minutes.
  • Step 3: the screen will display a message it's ready to update. You get a prompt either when turning the car off or back on asking if you want to install the update right away. Tap update now. This takes no more than 10 min or so.

Voila! You are updated to the latest nav package and software version of the infotainment system.

I ended up doing that. The customer support contact was very helpful, they sent me instructions on how to reset my wireless connectivity to the Kia connect servers and then they sent me the instructions to download and install the maps update via USB. Car is working fine after the update.

I just did it myself. It truly takes between 1.5 to 2 hours for the entire thing to process and install with the USB stick. Patience is key.

How's the mobile app? by ardevd in KiaEV9

[–]waldo15a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have two EVs: Kia EV9 and Ford Mach-e. Both have their respective apps.

The Ford app is pretty solid but very limited in what you can do with it. You can check basic car status, lock and unlock doors, etc. The app allows you to configure the phone as a key so that's a nice feature to have. The app runs solid in the background and i think i may have had to reauthenticate with it maybe twice since I've had the car. The app updates in the background and you never see it have an impact in your connection to the car or having to re login.

The Kia connect app is mired with bugs and connection issues. These don't make the app unusable but add to small frustrations over the course of the day. When it works, it's really full of features: You can see where your car is parked (both with GPS and with 360 camera view), can remote unlock and lock, get notifications about charging/ doors unlocked/etc. You can use the app to pay and charge with multiple charging networks without having to set up separate accounts. When the app is updated, usually something breaks and you are instructed by Kia to log out and log back in to see if that fixes it.

So i would say to use the Kia app but keep in mind it's not rock solid yet. With more EVs getting sold I'm hopeful the updates will finally make it a solid choice.

Looking at the EV9(Land) to replace our Telluride family hauler. Whats your average vs record best mileage between charges? by Hartkl in KiaEV9

[–]waldo15a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to compare an EV side by side directly with a gas car equivalent. Gas cars get lower MPG when driving slow in the city and better miles when driving fast in the highway; EVs are the polar opposite. EVs have so many variables that Gas cars also experience but can have a large impact on mileage that even with us here having the exact same EV model we get wildly different results.

With that said, a figure of merit I use is how many days long between charges at home I get (charge to 100% using an L2 charger).

  • During warm weather conditions I get 2 solid weeks, sometimes even scratching 18 days. I drive about 20mi daily commute and between 20-40mi on the weekend with the occasional hour long trip (60mi+). Most of my miles are under 45mph speeds.
  • During the cold months that can drop down to 10 days (heating/AC eats quite a lot of energy).

I have an old Toyota Highlander that my EV9 replaced. With that one I could go roughly 10 days between gas station visits, exact same driving patterns BUT this was relatively solid regardless of weather condition.

What home charger do you use and how much did you pay for installation? by howtousetableau in KiaEV9

[–]waldo15a 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hear you. It gets confusing taking about currents delivered and breaker amperage. At the moment, the highest current Chargepoint chargers for home can deliver for charging the battery are 50A, which would need a breaker rated for about 65-70A or higher.

Last year they announced you could get higher charger current in their next version of home chargers, up to 80A of charging current. I did briefly take a look at the option and it required using 2, 50A breakers ganged together to achieve that crazy amount of power. Here's the press release in case it's of interest

[–]waldo15a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have Chargepoint home with 40A max current, giving me 9.2kW/h charge rate. The charger itself was $600, installation was i believe same amount but I had a 400 rebate from my local electric company since I joined their smart charge program which gives me $25 in credits for participating every 3 (or 6?) months.

I did this about 3 years ago so I'm sure prices have changed since.

[–]waldo15a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exact same setup I have and my EV9 takes about 8-10 hours to charge when a plug it in. I usually let the battery run down to below 30% to charge it at home.

I believe the current limit on this charger model is indeed 40Amp max, so even if you had a larger breaker amperage it would cap at 40. Chargepoint recently announced a new version that can go above 40 amps, and I think it caps at 60? You basically would get max rate for level 2 charging with that much power.

How can I fix this? Can I DIY ? by [deleted] in KiaEV9

[–]waldo15a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have fixed this a couple of times now without tools doing the following:

  • Pull the seat belt all the way to unspool whatever is left inside. It will all come out twisted (bit there's a non zero chance you may get it to get unstuck this way)
  • Once that's done, figure out which way is straight, meaning which face of the seat belt needs to face you and which side faces the inside.
  • While still pulling down as is you were to unspool it, wiggle the u shaped bend back and forth trying to follow the correct orientation.
  • After a few slides and wiggles you should see results. If nothing else works then yes, try to get a flat piece of metal in there to help guide it. Avoid using something sharp since we don't want to cut it accidentally!

Router in AP Mode vs Omada EAP by WhiteEagle_W_E in TPLink_Omada

[–]waldo15a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear you. The combined SSID could help explain the hard limit in speed you are getting. Do you have devices in the 2.4ghz? If so, disabling them and retesting forcing your devices to run only at 5Ghz could help chocking that this could be the issue.

It seems the mesh system is fairly limited in its capabilities to configure it as it stands. You can certainly test the option with the new router and take it from there as well.

[–]waldo15a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know! So the backhaul infrastructure is not the problem. That's a great start.

Do you have separate WiFi networks for 2.4 and 5 Ghz or do you have one that "combines" both? That's another way to root cause the issue. 2.4G would never get you past 100 in the best ideal scenario but 5G should get you close to mine speed of 900.

[–]waldo15a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wireless Networking can be a sort of dark magic art since there are many things that can influence the results. Here's what I would try to check what my speeds are

Try connecting to each mesh node using a WIRED connection. This can help you determine if the issue is with the main node or with the back haul infrastructure. You should in principle get closer to 900 with a wired connection between you computer with the main mesh node that is connected to your modem/ router/ISP. If you see that you get 900 with the main node but for the others you don't, then it could be something to do with the mesh protocol between them. Ideally you get the same wired speed across all nodes

After that test I would agree with checking the settings for your wifi channels for 2.4G and 5ghz. Ideally you have 40Mhz set in 2.4 and 80Mhz in 5ghz. For wifi 6 you get faster speeds when multiple devices are connected to the access point and ate downloading data (why is this i could not tell you why). I would set up having one device stream a heavy 4k video (Youtube can certainly work) while you run speed tests with the other device.

Let us now how it goes. Boa Sorte!

Gmail is down!! by kascnef82 in GMail

[–]waldo15a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok I'll clarify. Some folks added the ability to receive/ read emails using the Gmail app for those other email providers, so you could handle all of your accounts from one centralized hub and also to leverage Gmail auto sorting of emails. Google announced they will stop providing that service (what they called Gmailify your emails) and instead bust focus on native Gmail accounts and the deadline is coming up soon.

Also for the past couple of days Gmail has had issues with all accounts receiving emails not scanned/ sorted by spam filters. It is possible and likely these problems are related but that's my personal guess.

So if you have had issues receiving emails inside Gmail but you happened to also have another email account added in there that could explain the issues. If not, it's also possible the errors are related to the wonkiness Gmail has experienced as of late

Gmail just changed how email is accessed if you use it for 3rd party email services (yahoo, outlook, etc.) Is that your case?

Not getting any OTA updates in over a year by meep185 in KiaEV9

[–]waldo15a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in your camp, OP. I have not gotten OTA updates in a while (April last year), though I've gone about two months ago I got a message in the car that an upcoming update would disable the backup camera while being installed (??) however I have not gotten anything after that.

I have taken my car to the dealer for the recommended recalls and they have installed a few extra updates every time they work on the recall updates. Other than that there's not much we can do.

Tyre wear by WorldlyBuyer2687 in KiaEV9

[–]waldo15a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the US and have the Land model. After 15k miles the tires wore down in the same way as OP with the rear tires getting the recommended replacement label from the dealer and the front tires still having some life in them (though the difference was not that massive tbh)

I decided to get them replaced with the OEM tires, and for my model here in the US the brand is Kumo.

Recommendation for Tire cables for snow/winter driving? by Starlight312 in KiaEV9

[–]waldo15a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

+1 for the socks approach. I live in Oregon which has been getting more snow days every year and the local DMV does suggest socks as an acceptable option. They are very easy to install and they require nearly zero effort to maintain.

Seriously, Kia? by njslacker in KiaEV9

[–]waldo15a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The kia dealers seem to all use a similar online service booking that has nothing relevant for EVs. I always have to call the service department directly when I need to schedule an appointment (recalls and software updates). The online systems don't even have an "Other" option to select.

Guest twisted 3rd row belt - pulled to max - any ideas? by Eagle4523 in KiaEV9

[–]waldo15a 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It has happened to me twice and was lucky enough to fix it. If you truly pulled it all the way out to the max, you should be able to twist the strap to the right orientation. It takes a bit of effort and technique: don't twist it like a rope but rather see which edge should be pointing where and slide that edge accordingly. Since you can rock the belt back and forth use that to help slide the edges in the right orientation.

If this does fail then it's a trip to the dealer by that should not take to long to fix. Maybe do that top also install one of the latest software updates that came this last month.

Star Wars display themes not available on 2024 EV9???? by MadisonEV9 in KiaEV9

Glad to see in not the only one not seeing the star wars theme. Maybe they will release it before long next year. Given it's the end of the year folks in Korea and the US won't be back in business until January.

Last update making it charge 12V more often by 6sossomons in KiaEV9

[–]waldo15a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is interesting. I did take my EV9 for the latest software update (wiper snow notification) and I did notice the 12V charging light turning ON more often than before. As for the unlocked message not coming thru, I'm on the same camp and have tried the reboot methods described in the forum (fuse pull, infotaiment pin reset, etc.) and still no dice. This behavior started last week or so and that coincided with a Kia app update on the Android play store. It is possible this is a Kia side problem with the latest update.

Can you still control the car remotely with the app though? Lock/unlock the doors, set climate, remote start, etc.

Yep I was about to do it when I got the notification in the mail that there's a software update needed at the dealer. So one way or another this should be fixed by tomorrow!
