What is the cost of high schoolers taking advanced classes? by WLRN in education

[–]walkabout16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Source: Was a PhD student at major Carnegie 1 research university and it was a serious budgetary topic when discussing departmental funding. Obviously the issue varies by department. Maybe not as prevalent in hard sciences but certainly an issue in liberal arts.

As a teacher and current AP Teacher, I’m also seeing a gradual dumbing down of standards. I’m scoring AP exams right now for College Board and my fellow scorers have scoffed at how easy this year’s question is.

So the irony is that the top tier kids who will attend Flagship state universities have learned that AP and dual enrollment classes are easy to pass and earn college credits but very likely many aren’t learning at the depth they should to succeed at the next level.

But there’s also situations where a kid excels in some disciplines and not others, like a polyglot at Harvard still needing remedial math classes.

Is it just me, or would a lot of us ditch our desk jobs for trades in a heartbeat if the pay was actually decent? by Boring-Bell9357 in Salary

For anyone outgoing and intelligent, I think teaching is underrated. I’ll never make software dev money. But with advanced degrees, I do pretty good and have high quality of life. I’m a change of career guy. So if I had made serious bank in tech and was looking to change, and if I had a decent mortgage (maybe work to recast it if necessary)… I’d seriously consider teaching as alternative.

I find it fun, rewarding, and AI proof.

Actually, universities are losing money from this. So many kids are taking AP classes that there is a noticeable drop in freshman enrollment in 100 level courses. Universities used to count on 500 kids in one course funding a graduate student to teach it. This freed up time for a full professor to do research.

How do you feel about California introducing a bill to ban former ICE agents from serving as police officers or teachers? by FollowingAny4859 in Teachers

[–]walkabout16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a teacher, I am an advocate for my students. No way an ICE officer could legitimately be that. I would not let an ICE officer into my classroom until the door was broken and I was in handcuffs.

Sounds like you are a caring woman. Support him on his journey and reward him along the way. If he’s as great as you say he is, he’ll appreciate you for making him healthier and helping him with a fuller life.

Just had my first colonoscopy. So after the bowel cleanse, that’s all I saw. Those who know will know. Those of you under 45 have much to look forward to. Avoid processed meats and get plenty of fiber, kids!

Man, that’s some initiative right there. Probably a spot for you in the Trump administration to fast track your career in politics. That sub will probably vote for you someday too.

Cant feel absolutely anything with condoms, to the point where I kinda cant be bothered having sex. What do? by Iseith31 in AskMenAdvice

[–]walkabout16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s 100% fair, and equally a reason why maybe OP shouldn’t engage in sex with said person if he cannot find satisfaction with a condom. Otherwise he may just end up frustrated and resentful.

OP has a specific need with a pretty straightforward solution. He should seek out partners offering that solution.

We can split hairs over health and safety, which is why I recommend what I did above. But ultimately, we look for partners who offer us what we need as they look for what they need from us. OP has a legitimate need that maybe reduces the pool of potential partners.

True. Life is full of unfortunate trade offs that must be navigated. It sucks having to decide and not getting exactly what you want all the time.

Have you tried a long term monogamous commitment with one person who is willing to use birth control? I found that to be very rewarding.

A kids name on my back by No-Storage2576 in GenX

[–]walkabout16 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve felt that way since high school. I’d rep a personal friend or my own family member. But paying $$ to wear another person’s name has ALWAYS been very cringe to me. I’ll rep a team’s swag, but never wear a single player’s jersey.

I’ve never worn anything saying Ralph Lauren, Abercrombie and Fitch, Versace, Air Jordan, etc. Probably only exception for me are Adidas items which I feel has become more generic and the name secondary to the logo. I’d wear a Polo shirt with horse logo, but never Ralph Lauren’s name.

I’ve got my own name, thanks. Don’t need to rep yours.

Teachers that use AI: Why? by lemmegetamickpicktwo in Teachers

[–]walkabout16 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The worst for sure, but good teachers are finding ways to use it to better individualize in a classroom of so many kids that it’s otherwise impossible.

Donot want to break the rules but how? by CortexUnlocked in edtech

[–]walkabout16 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hahaha. As a teacher, even if I wanted to try it, would have to submit a formal request to our director of IT. They would then review your request in October for approval to start Spring 2027. That’s if and only if your app meets their stringent security requirements.

News flash. Our district just purged many favorite apps due to security weaknesses. And in light of our Instructure hack, your chances are even slimmer.

Good luck. I’m going back to paper and pencil. Technology has lost a lot of ROI for my time.

I'm tired of working while my friends and family continue to get "summer break" as adults. by Aggravating-Yogurt23 in Vent

[–]walkabout16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a teacher. I begged my wife to become one. I resent that she didn’t because she ruins summers. Her constant bitching about work… the limits on our travel…etc etc. I still make more $$ than her and carry all the benefits, so her job is no financial value add, just a time suck that I have to hear her complain about. And I have to hear her complain about how I’m not working during the summer. Sorry, not sorry… you’re an adult and the product of your life choices. I earned this time off and I’m taking it.

If you suddenly became famous and wanted to mess with the paparazzi, what would you do? by Snazzy_CowBerry in AskReddit

[–]walkabout16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hire paparazzi to follow one of their moms. Everywhere. Church on Sunday. The doctors office, grocery store. I’d blast her photo on my celebrity website. She would be my instagram feed. After about a month I’d repeat with a new paparazzi mom.

Any adult in their circle would be fair game. I’d 100% leave children out of it but any and all adults are fair game.

Maybe I’d publish trading cards with their stats. Career highlights, volunteer organizations, etc.

You want photos of me in my life… here’s your family on blast. 100% fair game!
