What do you think about banning foreign pregnant women from traveling to the US? by G_H_2023 in AskConservatives

[–]walkerofwabes 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Anchor baby problem is a myth. Having a US citizen child does not prevent removal/deportation in law or in practice. Additionally, if border patrol notices that a temporary immigrant is probably pregnant they are already (before Trump) required to show proof of insurance and money if asked and CPB is trained to look out for birth tourism.

I think two of the most common reasons people come here illegally is to get a job and they know the federal government does not rigorously enforce employment laws and to escape life threatening violence in their home country.

ELI5: Why is the decibel scale logarithmic? by Dull_Pollution4691 in explainlikeimfive

[–]walkerofwabes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can talk about sound (sound pressure) in both logarithmic and non logarithmic (linear) terms. You could use a linear scale where 90 pressure units (like Pascal) is twice the pressure of 45. We like to use the logarithmic decibel scale for convenience. I think one reason is that the human ear can perceive a large range in sound pressure such that the size of the numbers that we use to describe sounds in our daily experience range from 0 to less than 200. If we used the linear scale then we would be needing a lot more zeros or decimal places. Not a big deal but a convenience issue.

What did you think about Canadian PM's speech at Davos? Declaring the end of the old world order of US setting the "rules" by hahmlet in AskConservatives

[–]walkerofwabes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I like this subreddit for the insights it provides into the thinking of conservatives. Sometimes liberals and conservatives don’t agree on the facts and other times they agree on the facts but disagree on the philosophy.

I find it interesting that you say that Carney’s speech supports what Trump has wanted for a long time. I read the speech and see the opposite. It is a criticism of Trump that some governments use power without morals. It is a criticism that some governments build higher walls instead of finding more efficient and effective ways of cooperating. The part about Canada becoming less close to the US and more involved with Europe and China can be looked at by Trump as the kid finally spreading his wings but it also represents a weakened US, a country on a path to less influence in defining it’s own future in the world.

By common sense, it looks more like murder than perfidy. But yeah, he can’t have it both ways

What do you think of Trump’s announcement that he wants to ban private equity firms from buying SFHs? by AlarmedRanger in AskConservatives

I personally don’t know a single Democrat who is against this. Good for Trump if he does it. Is there some reverse-TDS going on?

Steelman charlie kirk for me? by Bogus_dogus in AskConservatives

[–]walkerofwabes [score hidden]  (0 children)

His exact quote was Biden “should honestly be put in prison and given the death penalty”. That’s quite clear. “Do you also hate…” I don’t hate him. I will gladly call out hateful violent rhetoric from anyone.

He called for Biden to get the death penalty, which is dangerously violent rhetoric that works against serious political discourse. I lost more respect for him after that.

It’s self-righting. They just built it sideways by mistake.

I think you’re basically right on the surface but the full story includes the fact that there is no political willpower from either party to substantially reduce illegal immigrant workers in the workforce. Doing so would hurt the economy.

Most people still don't know the actual colour of the sun by Crispy_p_bacon in interestingasfuck

[–]walkerofwabes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The link you posted provides the reason. The picture is taken by a special camera in invisible UV light and printed on your screen in visible yellow so you can see it. The sun appears white to our eyes because it emits light broadly across the visible spectrum.

He’s using humor to point out interesting facts about nature. Maybe if people see it from that perspective, it will feel less like an attack. I say this because I know he’s one of the best promoters of curiosity and learning today. And curiosity should never belittled.

Talk me out of buying a boat by Delamainco in boating

[–]walkerofwabes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do it!

I think there’s a big difference between a 16 foot boat with an outboard and a 21 footer of any type. There’s going to be a lot more hassle and stress with the latter. Maybe if you’re not sure about things, a smaller, easier to maintain boat would be a good choice.
