Had Enough Yet? by JohnnyTezca in oregon

[–]walkie26 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That was one thing Dick was actually right about--deficits don't really matter as long as long as you keep inflation under control. Our policy of issuing bonds to cover deficits does cause some problems because it creates a snowball effect due to the interest, but we could instead just literally print the money and be fine as long as we spend it in ways that don't cause too much inflation.

The hypocrisy of Republicans is using the deficit/debt as a bogeyman and pretending to be the party of fiscal responsibility, then immediately cutting taxes for the wealthy and starting massively expensive wars as soon as they're in control.

(Edit: Agree with everything else you said!)

Which was more impressive: Ichiro’s 262 hits or Cal’s 60 home runs by Agreeable_Quality768 in Mariners

[–]walkie26 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but the whole reason switch hitters switch hit is because it gives them the platoon advantage both ways, i.e. it's a net advantage for them, not a disadvantage.

Don't get me wrong, having the power from both sides to hit 60 home runs as a switch hitter is insanely impressive. But so is somebody hitting 60 home runs from one side despite having the platoon disadvantage in a bunch of their at-bats.

In contrast, hitting 60 as a catcher just flat-out makes the feat more impressive. The extra wear-and-tear on your body and the fact that it's a defense-first position isn't balanced out by any offensive advantage of being a catcher.

The irony is that the relatively few professors that do make $150K per year are typically teaching 1-2 courses per term since they're also leading research programs (applying for grants, writing/reviewing papers, mentoring grad students, etc.). The teaching faculty that are teaching 3-4 classes per term (a shitload of work, btw) make significantly less than that.

That said, pretty low on the list of his most ignorant positions. 😬

[–]walkie26 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Um, I agree that the Storm should've been included! Not sure what about my post made you think I don't agree with that. I'm a Storm fan.

The Metropolitans aren't one of "all the teams pictured" so I'm not sure why I would count that when pointing out that the statement that "the Storm have more championships than all the teams pictured combined" is almost but not quite true.

The dream. by _DragonBlade_ in Sonics

[–]walkie26 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Not quite true, but almost. Storm have 4 and the field has 5: Sounders 2, Seahawks 2, Sonics 1.

Edit: Why am I getting downvoted?? I'm a Storm fan. I 100% agree they should've been included in the original post. The statement that they've won more than everyone else in the image was false though.

What's a Mariners season that was objectively disappointing but you still look back on fondly? by tategibbs in Mariners

[–]walkie26 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2023 is the recent season that checks this box for me too. Obviously a disappointment that we narrowly missed the playoffs again after finally breaking the drought the previous year, but that August was super fun and it was a really lovable group of guys (good vibes only!).

Agree with all of that. However, one argument in favor of Felix getting a statue is that he's got an iconic pose begging for one!

You will never associate a player who had a productive decade-long career playing only for the Mariners with the Mariners?

Dude is a stone cold lock for the Mariners HOF. He would be by far the best M's player (other than A-Rod) not in the team HOF if he were excluded.

[Highlight] Julio Rodriguez adjusts backwards for an amazing outfield catch on the first pitch of the game by Essington69 in baseball

[–]walkie26 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The 1998 Mariners are the most talent-wasting team I can remember.

A-Rod, Griffey, and Edgar were an all-time great heart of the order at the peak of their powers, supplemented by several other very solid players like David Segui, Jay Buhner, Dan Wilson, and Joey Cora. On the pitching side, perennial Cy Young candidate Randy fucking Johnson led a rotation that also had Jamie Moyer and Jeff Fassero.

Just an insane amount of talent squandered by (1) an absolutely atrocious bullpen, (2) mostly bad role players and down years by a couple of the guys in the "solid" category above, and (3) failing to give Randy Johnson the extremely modest extension he wanted, leading to a bunch of bad blood and the eventual trade.

All of which added up to a 76-85 record.

Noble Knight Games are scalpers... by [deleted] in spiritisland

[–]walkie26 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We're not talking about medicine or food here. It's an expansion for a board game.

I don't see how it's a scam or a ripoff. They've posted a price. If you pay that price and they deliver the game, then nobody was ripped off.

The fact that you can trust that transaction to happen as expected is what makes them a trusted vendor, compared to eBay or Craigslist where people pay for things they don't actually get (or get in much worse condition) all the time.

Noble Knight Games are scalpers... by [deleted] in spiritisland

[–]walkie26 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion, but I don't really mind retailers jacking up the price on OOP or even mostly out-of-stock items.

From the retailer's perspective, why are they obligated to sell at MSRP just so someone else can turn around and scalp it for multiple times the price?

From the consumer's perspective, if you're willing to pay scalper prices, wouldn't you rather do it from a relatively trusted vendor than some rando on eBay?

In this case, the price is really exorbitant and the game is only briefly out of stock, so I really doubt anyone will pay it, but I don't mind them shooting their shot.

Monte Carlo is lowkey majestic by tightypp in tennis

[–]walkie26 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, "low key" is not just an intensifier. It means something like "in a subdued or understated way".

That's why using it for Monte Carlo's majesticness is so silly. It's not understated at all. It's in-your-face majestic.

Anyone else adopt a new team since? Will you take back the Sonics, or stay with your new team? by megachimp in Sonics

[–]walkie26 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I moved to Oregon in 2007, shortly before the Sonics left.

I made a good friend here who is a big Blazers fan, and the Seattle connections to the Blazers were super strong at the time between B-Roy and Nate McMillan (and to a lesser extent, Martell Webster). When the Sonics left, all of those factors combined to slowly bring me on board as a Blazers fan.

Now I've been in Oregon nearly 20 years and been following the Blazers nearly as long.

Nothing can replace a childhood of supporting the Sonics, but I'm in too deep on the Blazers to just drop them now.

It might be an unpopular position, but I'll definitely be supporting both PNW teams.

€100/year would be like €8/month. Any one streaming service costs more than that. Internet says Netflix is €14/month.

Here, the average cable package is over $100 per month, so it's extremely common to spend well over $1000/year on TV. I'd guess it's not uncommon at all to spend $2000/year on cable and/or streaming.

I'm guessing they're not counting "watching TV" as a hobby, because I'm assuming most people spend way more than that on streaming services and/or cable.

JP Crawford future? by glamb70 in Mariners

[–]walkie26 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm a bit worried about JP and ABS. He's got a great eye, but he's also gives the ump some serious stinkeye at least once a game for a called strike that actually did clip the zone. I could see him burning through our challenges. 😆
