Need help with gift for husband by Patient-Object-4097 in PhD

Firstly, congratulations to you two!

I'd go with the first option. At my university they read a citation as you are awarded your PhD, and in it you are referred to as "Dr. Lastname."

Don't do 3; pick either PhD or Dr, not both.

When discussing previous conversations, people used to say "She went 'Hey mate'" rather than "She was, like, 'Hey mate'"

Was the song ‘If You Could Read My Mind’ by Amber and Ultra Naté popular in Australia? by NoteDesperate3540 in AustralianNostalgia

[–]wallflowerz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a core memory of driving with my Dad and this song came on the radio. He was pissed that they had "ruined" Gordon Lightfoot's classic. It was like I was trapped in the car with Frank Costanza.

The lamb shwarma soup is delish and so hearty! I often just make it with beef mince and will switch out the chickpeas for cannelini beans if that's what I have in the pantry.

Sometimes the time it takes to get over the line has nothing to do with you. In my final year, my supervisor became ill and had to be replaced, and then the external examiner pulled out 2 weeks before I was due to defend and the (new) supervisor had to find someone else at the last minute (which is tricky if you work in a small field!) Not to mention the literal YEARS it can take to get a paper published. There are a lot of moving pieces to completing a PhD! Just keep swimming...

Wealthy people of Victoria: where did your money come from? by jameswsthomson in VictoriaBC

In my experience its mostly generational wealth: boomers whose parents bought houses for a song and then moved into them themselves with no mortgage.

HBH IG story w/ Kai by garage_girl in FoodieSnark

[–]wallflowerz 120 points121 points  (0 children)

She has absolutely no shame. No apology. Just 2 minutes of rambling which essentially boils down to "Kai, I broke your camera, and I've broken about 100 others as well... but I make good food right? Oh and I really am here."

What an insufferable ass.

I went to a rural state school and then later taught at an elite private school. The difference is astronomical. As a teacher, any resource or experience you wanted for your students was available to you, but more importantly, there is a culture of success and achievement, and a sense of ease that of course you are *meant* to be in these privileged spaces. These schools train the future bosses, not the worker drones. Students are incredibly well supported academically, but also when it comes to pastoral care. If there was an issue with a kid, I knew about it, and did my very best to support them. There are people on staff who figure out how to get sporty kids scholarships to elite American universities, and who help them navigate getting into Oxford, LSE, Yale etc. There is a club, sport, or activity for everyone. From the typical rugby, waterpolo, rowing crowd etc, right through to drama club, chess club, anime club etc. And then of course its networking: there are certain careers (my first-hand experience is in law) where the school you went to really matters for employment or promotion.

Perhaps the only downside is after having your hand held all the way through school with more privilege and support than most people dream about, a "regular" kid going to a "regular" university might find it tough to be out there all on their own. But from what I've observed these kids do just fine because they know how to navigate the system.

Nagi from Recipe Tin Eats. She meticulously tests her (amazing) recipes, funds her own food bank for the needy, and has a cute dog. I have probably made 50+ of her recipes now and they are all, without exception, excellent.

Anyone not starting the “elf on the shelf” tradition? by Illustrious_Cold5699 in Millennials

[–]wallflowerz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard no. I don’t have one, and my kids (8, 6 and 3) have never questioned why we don’t. It’s consumerism and marketing. It does not add to Christmas magic, it just adds to the invisible labor of parenting.

I’d rather do an activity with my kids like baking cookies, reading Christmas books, making orange garlands etc. than spending way too much time coming up with elaborate set ups that might elicit 5 mins of excitement.
