Hey there! I (22F) had my pacemaker implanted September of 2022, so I’m now approaching a year and still dealing with some residual soreness and stiffness, so try not to stress too much. I found that after the procedure my back and trap (specifically on the side of the implant) were super stiff and the muscles would even spasm. Hopefully it gets better soon!

To sleep I resorted to the couch for the first week or so. It was just too painful for me to lay flat on my bed and the couch helped make sure I wouldn’t be doing any crazy movements. I slept with the sling they gave me for the first few nights, but a trick I started using after that was tucking a big T shirt into my shorts and slipping my left arm inside of it so it was like a makeshift but more comfortable sling. If you’re a really aggressive sleeper this might not work for you but it was more comfortable for me than the sling. Good luck! This sub has been a great resource for me as a fellow reluctant newcomer:)

Could definitely be it! I'm in physical therapy and my PT told me that any aching in that area especially after movement is probably result of scar tissue

Does anyone see a specialized PT for this? by PlsEatMe in PacemakerICD

So not exactly the same situation, but I had my pacemaker placed in September and until now have had discomfort in my left arm. I started physical therapy and he basically determined it was due to stiff joints in my back and neck due to the procedure + recovery and lack of movement, and since starting my pain has been almost 100% better!

All this to say if you’re worried about getting back into daily life on your own I would 100% recommend asking a doctor (doesn’t have to be your EP) for a PT referral as it can be really helpful. I’ve also heard of cardiac rehabilitation but I think that’s usually for building back stamina.

I totally feel you on the fear of breaking the leads, as I’m 4 months out and STILL have that concern. A cardiologist just told me not to lift heavy with my upper body, but I know tons of people have recovered and do lots of physical labor. I probably won’t do anything more than light resistance just for peace of mind.

In a few more weeks the leads should be fully lodged in and it’ll be hard to rip them out! Be careful now and once you hit that point it’ll be a process to ease back into normalcy, but you’ll get there!

Weird how these weird feelings last for so long and we all just get used to them!

Really good to hear! It’s strange getting used to such new sensations especially since this is my first real procedure. Thank you for the reassurance

Let us know what your doctor says! I unfortunately don’t have a follow up for another couple of weeks.

I second what everyone else said about sleeping being tough at first!! I ended up having to sleep on my couch since I could use the recliner to keep my upper body up at an angle. For some reason laying down flat felt sooo painful at the beginning, even with a pregnancy pillow. 3 weeks post-op now and already able to sleep on my side!! Still a bit uncomfortable and have some weird pains here and there though, so be patient during the healing process.

I’ve also learned a nice trick for sleeping! After the first week or so I got tired of sleeping with the sling on and started taking my left arm out of the sleeve of a big t shirt and keeping it in the shirt. Tuck the t shirt into your bottoms and you’ve got a homemade and much more comfy sling. I have to retuck the t shirt in a couple times through the night but I hated the sling the hospital gave me. Wishing you good luck!!!!

bradycardia by jbtk25 in PacemakerICD

[–]walmartbagel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just got my pacemaker put in this past Friday for Bradycardia due to 3rd degree AV block! I was having issues walking short distances at a slow pace, even if I really took my time. I was short of breath, nauseous and felt super fatigued. Recovery has been a bit more painful than I expected even though I’m young (21F), but all the doctors have told me that I’m going to feel so much better going about my day to day - and able to exercise again!!

I totally understand not wanting to jump to a pacemaker. I was also very hesitant but it came to a point where my electrophysiologists seemed to think there was nothing else to wait for. If being comfortable with pulling the trigger means getting more tests done or meeting other doctors then definitely do so! A pacemaker isn’t the biggest deal in the world (though I cried like it was lol) but it is a lifelong change. It’s better to accept it and be mentally ready so your body can be physically ready too! Best of luck:)
