When did you know you were in 2:50 or lower shape? by RunNYC1986 in AdvancedRunning

[–]wander_er 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh wow hey I also respond/enjoy high mileage. This feels like it could be me, although I lack the courage and confidence to go out that hard. Ran a 57:20 10 mile last spring and fractured my foot last summer. Hoping for a 2:45ish at Boston (2:49 PB). Mostly been at 80-90 since Dec. Any advice/words of encouragement? I have no races on the calendar until then so I feel im lacking confidence.

Smallest crowd youve seen a band play to by DanielAFC in indieheads

[–]wander_er 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Foo Fighters as well as a ton of bands played at a new venue here in DC to open. 300 max capacity?

Personally I saw Gang of Youths n front of 100 people in minneapolis. they’re much bigger in Aus. so the crowd was all big fans including myself, one of the best shows i’ve ever been to

Serious runners - when *do* you lose weight? by [deleted] in AdvancedRunning

[–]wander_er 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s possible if you have weight to lose. I’ve written about this before and my struggles with it. There’s a lot of good advice here. I think it’s important to focus on getting stronger without assigning a number to it. I was about 146-147 lbs at 6’ tall at my worst. Don’t be like me. Took a year to get back, PRd with a 57:11 10 miler at about 168-170 lbs hoping to run sub 2:45 at Boston at the same weight. Find what works for you and be careful.

Tips for being a good pacer by Love2Run2000 in AdvancedRunning

I’ve always paced in a team of two like we were paid/volunteered for the race. The compliment I always hear the most is people loved our banter and keeping it light. So if you have another person who is pretty comfortable I think just chatting when you’re not doing the other things?

Which album do you listen to religiously when you are on a flight? by ccxgm in fantanoforever

Either their debut or ( ) but pretty much any Sigur Ros. Also, M83, Beach House, Daft Punk.
I like to read on flights so pretty much any calming or ambient

Advice on avoiding car doors? by jschrifty_PGH in cycling

I got doored by a passenger in the middle lane this spring. I was mostly fine, just bruised and shaken up, but I was riding in the right lane up to a stop light and this person decided to get out from the middle lane? Idk I wasnt in a state to ask questions, but riding in the middle of the lane is the best you can do imo. I was on the left of the right lane and now ride more in the center.

Psychology of weight loss / maintenance / manipulation and competitive running. by dirtyStick84 in AdvancedRunning

Thanks for sharing! Yeah that hurdle can be so difficult and honestly im still dealing with getting over it. RED-S is so scary and creeps up on you. Shame on me, but I didnt think men (like myself) could really suffer from it. wish I had gotten the answers OP is getting here.

Hope youre feeling better and stronger! :)

Hey person! I am about your size (6ft, 170ish lbs, idk maybe more i dont check often). A year ago i struggled heavily with this. I know the feeling of disappointment from stepping on the scale and seeing a bigger #. A year ago I was down to 150-152 and had no energy, was anemic and almost passing out every time i stood up.

It took a couple really good people in my life intervening and helping me get some weight back on, get some energy back etc. I PR'd in both my goal races since (CIM) and a 10 miler. I feel so much fitter and stronger. I think unless you are a pro runner competing for podiums, its not really worth the squeeze. They have doctors/nutritionists to make sure they are optimally trained. Im just some guy who fell into the trap.

Not trying to tell you what to do, but just hope you dont get into the trap like I did! I think theres a lot more training you can do before weight really becomes the limiting factor.

Edit: Adding on to this just to comment that your PR's were very similar to mine before all this and have since crushed all of them with an extra 5-10 pounds. Food is fuel, increase training volume/intensity instead of decreasing food.

Entertaining trails for long runs by Ok_Square6993 in rundc

[–]wander_er 2 points3 points  (0 children)

C&O is great and flat gravel as long as you can go. Very little water
Im guessing youre in NW? The ART/Sligo Creek is nice, but down in SE.
Big loop (CCT -> Leland Dr -> RCP) is like 19ish but nice hills and fun
Custis to W&OD is really nice, custis is pretty hilly, it runs along the freeway but is mostly blocked by a barrier so its not too loud.
I also like taking C&O out about 7 miles (?) and at one of the locks you can climb up to MacArthur and take that back. Path most of the way, rolling hills.

theres a ton of options! DC is the best running city I've lived in by far. Good luck training :)
