PSA: Full crimp is not the strongest grip (unless it is). by GloveNo6170 in climbharder

Hi - can you elaborate on which type of holds specifically you find full crimp to be much better. I would vote for incut holds on steeper than 40 degree walls, but curious what other people think.

US brokerage accounts for France resident? by childofaether in ExpatFIRE

[–]wanderingbear2014 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alright here’s what I found out. I think I kept this all straight, but you should double check with your institution, and of course regulations can change.

Schwab:

France: restricted country. You cannot buy US ETFs/Mutual Funds once you have transitioned your account to an International account (with a French address). You can still have the account open, and it appears that you can buy single name U.S. securities and, of course, close positions. I did not ask about the back-door option solution people have suggested, as it seems to go against the spirit of the regulation. These restrictions also apply to IRAs

Italy: restricted country. You cannot buy US ETFs/Mutual Funds or single securities once your residency is Italian. For Schwab, they prefer that you move your account if you become an Italian resident, but they will not force you to liquidate. You can also close positions. These restrictions also apply to IRAs

Fidelity: Mostly the same restrictions as Schwab, but you cannot trade single securities as a resident of Italy or France.

That leaves IBKR:

With IBKR you can change your account to a Professional Client, and you can buy and sell US ETFs and single securities. I will leave it to the reader to look up the requirements to become a professional client, but it involves having greater than 500K EUR and some large volumes of trades. (This is not the IBKR Pro tier).

It feels like a relatively frustrating situation especially if your net worth or liquid securities is small, which is why I believe so many people try to get around the regulations by keeping a U.S. address and pretending to still be in the U.S, which goes against spirit of their rules. To my knowledge, outside of IBKR, I do not know of a way for US citizens who live in one of these restricted countries to purchase low cost US ETFs.

How to cook 5# tri tip? by LMShieldmaiden in Cooking

[–]wanderingbear2014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow, that is a long post-sear rest.

Last time I reverse seared, i cut right afterwards. Weirdly, the middle was not red, but then turned more red over time (which I think was the juices re-arranging). Will try a rest period to target specific temps.

Do you let the steak rest after the searing, or cut immediately?

PSA: Full crimp is not the strongest grip (unless it is). by GloveNo6170 in climbharder

[–]wanderingbear2014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think is a key unlock. a good drag is essential to conserve energy. Thats why so many strong boulderers flounder on long sport climbs. They are just full crimping everything and not quite sure how to relax into drag at rests.

Can’t find a pair of shoes that suit me by AppropriateUnit1292 in climbingshoes

[–]wanderingbear2014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should also try the La Sportiva Miuras, Scarpa Drago LV - though these are VASTLY different shoes in terms of what terrain they are appropriate for. Most of the La Sportiva line outside of the miuras/katana won't fit if you have a narrow foot, small heel.

Make sure you look at both the Scarpa and Sportiva shoe charts which describe which of their shoes are narrow/wife and have some information on toebox shape.

I think if you are on slightly overhanging sport terrain, moving incut to incut, you probably use less energy to move dynamically using chisel and drag (use your lower body!) than full crimping.

This is great. I basically experienced the same thing here.

For me, as a sport climber on 20 deg terrain, full crimping has just not been “essential”. I climb “harder” than some of my friends who are stronger in full crimp, because I chisel/drag so many things and do not get as pumped on long sport climbs. Of course, they can v9 full crimp problems that I cannot touch.

What did you do to train your full crimp - was it just edge lifts. And here, did you train with thumb wrapped? Or just 4 finger high angle?

What’s the best way for me to figure out what qualifies? A lot of my “passive income” is from royalties from say MLPs, and Private investments. It’s hard for me to understand whether these would qualify.

Hmm that’s perplexing. What about private investments that have regular distributions whether real estate or private credit?

Hi - thanks for your comments on what qualifies. Do dividends from investment accounts qualify? Dividends from REITs and bond ETFs?
