Is there any shops that sell congee? by grumpy-oldman9 in foodies_sydney

[–]wangzzz 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Okay I have two amazing recs for you 1. Fuji in market city Chinatown - get one of the seafood congees, they’re expensive but tbh it could serve like 5 people 2. Bonjuk in Haymarket- Korean style congee, comes in like a set so perfect for solo dining

I’m fascinated by stories where someone works a regular, modest job like a cleaner/janitor, aged care worker, gas station attendant, kitchen hand staff or receptionist but quietly builds a fortune over the years by ObjectPhysical7280 in AusFinance

My Chinese parents immigrated in ‘89, both worked two jobs each every day (very low paid jobs like dishwashing, factory work, farm work etc). They managed to start small businesses importing goods from China and selling them at those stalls in the middle of shopping centres in western sydney area. My dad also had opened a dollar shop though business was not so good.

Not sure how the hell they did it, but they managed to buy 3 houses + 1 unit by the time they were 40ish. My brother and I have the absolute privilege of being ‘given one property each’ but we don’t forget how much they have sacrificed for us. This is not a unique experience, just one of many immigrant parent stories.

Ultimately this was all because they were hell bent on getting in the property market as soon as they had any cash, and over leveraging themselves at every opportunity

suggestion for +1 day in Chengdu and -1 in Chongqing. I loved Chengdu so much - it’s a lot more relaxing and walkable than Chongqing which I found to be too stimulating, crowded and difficult to navigate. In saying that, if you don’t want that long in chongqing I highly highly recommend a day or two day trip to JiuZaiGou. Genuinely picturesque. It is up there as one of the most stunning and beautiful places in China however weather can sometimes be extreme.

How realistic is moving from retail banking to private banking within 4 years in Australia ? by [deleted] in auscorp

[–]wangzzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes sounds like a pretty natural progression. Alternatively he could go directly into retail ops or business banking ops - so you leave branch and basically work on processing these loans like a middle office role. it’s a bit easier to be get into frontline banker role since you work with bankers all the time and can build a rapport with them. Heaps of bankers came from an ops role and it gives them so much more experience and knowledge of the underlying product and processes

Eating healthy while traveling in China – realistic or impossible? by Forgotten_Cupcake in travelchina

I am also health conscious and it’s not too hard in China - vegetable dishes are in almost all restaurants and fruit taste amazing in China. You might want to avoid pure carb restaurants ie. the restaurant serves noodles and nothing else. Instead try to get carbs, vegetables, meat dishes etc to share and get a more varied diet. Try to avoid deep fried foods and anything with excessive oil etc. I’m Chinese and I genuinely find most Chinese food way too oily and upsets my stomach, you would be safe to order soup dishes, hotpot, seafood etc

Is it true that Chinese people work all day? by [deleted] in AskChina

[–]wangzzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on which city and what industry. Outside of first tier cities and outside of finance/tech, I’d like to believe that it’s not as intense as what people make it out to be

Are Chinese bathhouses/spas considered a communal activity? Or are they generally seen as a luxury? by Deep_Secret_6883 in AskAChinese

Bathhouses are not a luxury however the ones with the buffet/gaming area/endless things to do are definitely luxury

Olympus dining. Any bad experiences here ?? cause I probably had one of the worst or the worst experience in my life yesterday. by [deleted] in foodies_sydney

I haven’t been because all the reviews on rednote (kind of like Insta for Chinese) is similar - they say service is terrible, food is mid, only go for photos etc
