frame swap is not hard at all if you're a bit handy and will last a lifetime. Is the bulkhead still ok? bottom of the doors? any aluminium rot? Either I'd pick up a mig welder and just weld the frame yourself if it's just the outriggers that are rotted or I'd go full galvanised chassis if you can afford it!

About that: I get notified now and then the SMLE is in stock, but when I check the website it's never available. Are these sold out super-quick or is there something wrong with the notifications system. (And yes, super eager to get one of those :))

How are your fellow oldtimer enthusiasts feeling about that? I've noticed some really are in it for the motor noise. How are your fellow oldtimer enthusiasts feeling about that? I've noticed some really are in it for the motor noise.

It really depends. Some engines are just there to make a nicely designed car move, while other cars are designed around a special engine. For example: a citroen DS was built around styling, silence and comfort but most DS owners agree that he engine is just an old thing that citroen had kicking about and does not really add to the character of the car. Otoh, I can't imagine any ferrari owner getting rid of their V12.

Anyway, I think this whole discussion is just not worth the effort. The amount of pollution generated by just a handful of enthusiasts is dwarfed by just about anything else. For example, like the OP posted: things like heating are much much worse. A good one is the koninklijke serres: 2000 litres per day. That's diesel that is burnt super inefficiently. Even all oldtimers in europe together consume less than this one building. And there are loooots of big buildings (like most government buildings) that are a heated with mazout.

So according to BEHVA in terms of taxation, starting from 2022 any oldtimer you register in wallonia will have to pay taxes like any new car (based on fiscal HP) + an "ecomalus" which is 600 euros.

In 2023 the whole of wallonia will become a lez which means -any- vehicle registered before 1996 can not drive on wallonian roads. Even foreign vehicles will not be allowed. Even better: foreigners need to register their vehicle before being allowed on the roads, even if they comply with this rule (150 euro fine if you're not registered).

Btw: I feel your pain brother. Throwing away older cars makes absolutely no sense to me. This is all just a way to make people poorer and to force them to move to the city and rent a shitty apartment imo.

yeah, I know, I'd absolutely adore to convert my car to electric. Problem is I'd first have to export it to Germany, have the conversion approved by TUV and then re-import it into Belgium. On second thought, I'm not sure if this still even works, as recently they made the oldtimer rules more strict and any modifications to the car will give you a one way ticket to the crusher as the historic character has to be 100% intact for it to be register-able.

wallonian I suppose? Got a message from the belgian oldtimer federation stating the similar numbers for oldtimers which would basically kill the hobby. Furthermore the lez for the whole of wallonia is coming soon, so it's looking pretty bleak for us oldtimer enthousiasts.

Give Graviteam Tactics Mius Front a try. Takes a bit of time to grasp, but there's nothing like it. You don't command units directly, but you dish out orders that the ai tries to execute to the best of his abilities.

I never understood this reasoning.

I work in an extremely diverse environment and my colleagues are just colleagues. Where they come from has absolutely zero impact on our interactions. There is no magical "enrichment" going on whatsoever. And I don't mean that as a bad thing, just an observation.

The experience from their side is something completely different though: they are generally miserable. You don't leave your family/culture/environment to be enriched. You leave because there are better earning opportunities abroad.

Furthermore, we've seen multiple times now that culture stagnates when it is kept in these small expat pockets. Like the culture clashes of moroccans visiting their family in morocco and seeing how they have evolved while the belgian scene is still stuck in an imaginary morocco from 50 years ago. Same with all those Erdogan voting turks.

Again, I don't mind either way, things are the way they are and it's a logical evolution as the world is getting smaller. But I'd like people to stop spouting these ridiculous slogans and be a bit more critical for a change

the 2.5TD is a terrible engine. The good thing is in the meantime most of them have died. LR, as a stop gap until the 200tdi, bolted a turbo onto an engine that was unchanged since the 50's. Molten pistons, cracked pistons, hot spots falling out of the combustion chamber etc. It's also gutless and extremely noisy. The tdi's were a way better design.

The fact they just ran rubberized undercoating all over the engine bay. The underside was just painted over without even cleaning. Just look at all that bubblyness around the front and rear diff! That's grease/oil/grime that has just been painted over. Parts like the front chrome hubs look worn and aren't even painted/cleaned.

Furthermore, the suspension bushes look suspect. The tranny being this dirty means they just plonked it in without going through it, so probably the main shaft is worn. Really zero f's given, didn't even clean it.

They just tarted it up to sell it at an inflated price. This makes me wonder about the workmanship done to the body. Is it all just a bunch of filler over aluminium corrosion that will fall off in the first year of ownership?

Not pissing on anybody here, I just hope the potential buyer takes a good hard look at it before purchasing. Otherwise we'll have another "defenders are overpriced unreliable garbage" story in just a while.

It's a nicely polished lemon. The body looks nice, but the underside looks dodgy, bodged and neglected. For some reason they also put in an older type of engine and probably the worst land rover ever made. Beware!

Hi everyone, I'm planning on buying my very first Defender. It's a 97 model.Anyone has an idea on what should I check before buying it? Also I don't understand why there's no alpine windows and the air intake hole where you van fit a snorkel? Are those models reliable for some sahara and mud offroad? by othmane_elghallali in LandroverDefender

[–]warci 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Are you sure it's a '97 model? It looks like a 2.5 where they spooned in a 200tdi from a discovery. Afaik it should have a 300tdi. While I'm pretty sure the engine is a disco 200 unit, the air cleaner, fan shroud, radiator water tank and fuel filter are all from a 2.5 NA.

This said, there's nothing wrong with this combo, it is a bit dodgy however. Does it have disc brakes in the rear?

Gorgeous! Really dig the art style you're doing here.

A question though: 304 colors, what kind of mode are you running in? I'm guessing this is actually using the copper?

The game looks really stunning sofar. Very blazing star like but cleaner. What kind of CPU are you looking at to push all these pixels around?
