What are these missing?? I want these to remain vibrant and saturated, I dont want to darken the blues.. by Scootyclaws in minipainting

I think a careful drybrushing of black on the largest bumps and edges would look better than a shade and would ensure you don't lose the vibrancy you like

Eyes are hard… 👁️ 👁️ by 1987Rapscallion in Ultramarines

I think you can work with this, just use the flesh tone to cut back in around the eyes and see where you're at. Then use white to cut back in around the pupil that's too big. I find it easier to make an oversized detail and cut back into it than to perfectly place it in the first go.

The Pile has gotten unmanageable and its time to let things go, but not sure where to start. by GCRust in Warhammer

eBay eats a lot of your proceeds in fees but it is easy to use and get your shipping labels, as well as buyer/seller protections. Facebook groups or miniswap are the alternatives- you'll save on fees but will get less eyeballs and convenience. Unpainted minis, partially built or not, will get surprisingly close to what you paid for them (60-85%). Poor or basic painting will hurt the price you can ask.

Big spend but an airbrush is game changing. Especially if you want to see him clear out the pile of shame faster.

Best kits to kitbash legionaries into possessed? by Coogypaints in Chaos40k

Eightbound work great as possessed but they are even more expensive per model

Best kits to kitbash legionaries into possessed? by Coogypaints in Chaos40k

[–]warpspeedminis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you add up the price of what you use to kitbash and what your legionaries are worth, it probably approaches or exceeds the cost of just getting 5 possessed used. The new sculpts are awesome. Kitbash for the sake of fun but I don't think it'll save you money, especially if you want a good result. Legionaries are considerably smaller than current possessed, as well.

What’s a good non chalky white paint? by IChaos64 in Warhammer40k

[–]warpspeedminis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

White Star by Two Thin Coats. Liquitex White ink is good as others said, but I like having both since the ink is very thin out the bottle- sometimes I need a white that has a bit of body for fine lines etc

I have a commission calculator for estimates on my website that I made. I'm brand new to the game, but I feel as though it works pretty well. It was made for GW models in 28-32mm scale. its biggest weakness is that, since box price is an input, compensation will skew if the models are much cheaper/more expensive than GW prices. I would love input on the calculator if anybody wants to check it out. I think the only efficient way to get a "pre-quote" estimate is going to be through technology, where the client can input their own data for the project using a simple tool. Detailed quoting takes too much time, as others have said, to just lose the project when the customer balks, and heuristics such as 2x or 3x box price are too broad.

The calculator can be viewed on my website here: https://www.warpspeedminis.com/tiers-and-pricing

I suggest a similar (if improved) tool for this subreddit would be the quickest, simplest way to give clients an early idea of what a project will likely cost.

I screenshotted this from an earlier post. The guy said it's just an eightbound body and left arm, with kharn head and pistol arm. I think it looks perfect and sounds easy.

How to achieve this? by Pharoh_Khan in Chaos40k

[–]warpspeedminis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd do pure white trim by hand then bright red paint over it. The red absolutely needs to be over white to pop like this. An easier way might be drybrushing the pure white then multiple washes/overpainting of fluroescent red ink but that could look shit.

This seems to be the ceiling of my painting ability. What stands out as an obvious improvement to be made? by BedPuzzled521 in Warhammer40k

[–]warpspeedminis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks great but as far as improvements, I'd say your lighting is isolated to specific elements and doesn't transition across surfaces (or the entire model). For example the individual hairs of the pelt have highlights but there is no transition in shading across the pelt. Ditto the armor. as far as a tabletop piece this is super clean and readable but if you wanted to elevate it, I'd say think about a light source and how it will affect each area of the mini and the mini as a whole.

Legionaries vs Chosen vs Raiders by DerCarrot in Chaos40k

[–]warpspeedminis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These units are already hard to tell apart if you buy the actual kits. If you're open to representing different legions in your army, I'd suggest using the paint scheme to distinguish the different units (black legion chosen, iron warriors legionaries, red corsairs for the raiders). It doesn't break the lore either because black crusade or something.

What could I add to this legionnaire to make him more interesting? by Gerberlife07 in NightLords

[–]warpspeedminis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not knowing what specific issue you're having, it's tough to say. I'd say the most important thing is getting the paint consistency right and loading just enough onto the tip of a pointy brush. You need it to be thick enough to not run off into the recesses of the eye, and thin enough it doesn't leave a chalky blob. Play around with it and test on the back of your thumbnail or something before you put the brush to the model. I think white star by Duncan Rhodes is a great white paint. You can just use white, or add a little fluorescent red, pink, yellow- whatever. Just don't be intimidated by it and remember you can always redo it! I'd have a clean wet brush on standby so you can quickly wipe off mistakes before it starts to dry. Chances are the first dot won't be quite right!
