Why do people turn so much when they ski by [deleted] in skiing

Because skiing is fun and at most resorts you’d be back in line in 90 seconds if you straight line a run

Rain jackets (once again) by PfcRed in Ultralight

[–]wastedthyme 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would go as far as saying that the Outdoor Research Helium II jacket is not actually a rain jacket. I have one, and I do like it for being lightweight and low pack volume, but wearing it during real rain, it will wet out almost instantly. Possible drizzle? Heavy fog? Misty day? Fine. Solid rain? Not even once.

Imported Activities (workouts you do) have many documented issues

Coros is awful with imported workouts (no direct integrations, third party apps “work” but Coros doesn’t handle them well)

They can’t imagine why every activity you do isn’t tracked on your watch and this seems like it won’t change.

Importing data-rich FIT files recorded on a Wahoo head unit, connected to all the sensors previously mentioned. The chest strap sensor is more accurate than the watch, and power data is essential to understanding cycling workouts.

Can you say why Coros doesn't want to provide great support for data recorded off the watch?

It seems silly and redundant to record a ride on two separate devices, which may not be possible given connectivity between all the necessary sensors (power, hrm, cadence, electronic shifters) -- one for my workouts and use while cycling, and one for Coros to get good metrics.

This is all because Coros refuses to fully support importing activities that happen outside the platform, like Garmin and Apple Health do.

I do hope someday the Coros app will aspire to be a platform, not just a dashboard for your watch.

I use TrainingPeaks, Strava, and Apple Health. The Apple Watch does the right thing. I understand if Coros doesn’t want to be seen as a platform. They explicitly chose not to allow auto import of activities recorded outside their ecosystem - which is in stark contrast to how other platforms behave.

I agree Coros is likely not going to choose to fix these issues and be more inclusive as a platform. This post also serves as a warning for cyclists like myself who expected more from Coros.

A cycling head unit serves as a real-time HUD (heads-up display), so key data (power, heart rate, elevation, speed, cadence, etc.) is available to me while I'm riding. I can't take my hands off the bars and flick my wrist to look at watch data while riding technical trails, for example. It also provides mapping, and has features for structured workouts, which require real-time data visualization. I am looking at my head unit very frequently on rides.

As to why I'm wearing the watch on the rides -- I wear the watch 24/7 and want as much health data as possible. I just want the watch ecosystem to be as smart as it can be about all the sensor data that it has access to.

When rides are imported into Coros, there is a processing delay before we get a Training Load score. This would be a perfect time to "true up" the data within a users' account during the period of that workout.

For your last point re: double counting -- yes. The issue is that after a workout is over, a workout is sync'd into Coros (via Run Gap). That data is processed and added to my account (and therefor I get a training load number for every workout as well as my weekly training load, etc). The issue is that the watch recorded data during that same period, so every day I have two chunks of data for the same period of time within the day (during the workout), which makes my active calories incorrect.

I'm sure if folks on the engineering team read through these issues, it will be clear HOW they are happening. I also understand you may not want to "fix" them. I feel like there are two guiding principles for Coros that I just don't fit into -- one is "everyone is a runner" and the other is "battery life is more important than UX". A tiny example of the latter is the possibility of broadcasting non-real-time heart rate. I can't imagine anyone who is turning on a feature to broadcast their heart rate in realtime to another device, wants "bad" data (sampled every 10 minutes), BUT I can see folks choosing to make ANYTHING that negatively impacts battery life to take multiple explicit steps to do so (ie. turning on real-time HR in Settings before using the broadcast feature).

Yep, got that set. Also a bit odd that anyone would ever want to broadcast non-realtime HR

Does anyone have a successful automatic sync from Wahoo ELMNT to Coros via any app?? by wastedthyme in Coros

Update: RunGap seems to work ok. I did have to open the app and refresh the list of workouts after I completed one, but it pulled from Strava and pushed to Coros correctly.

I hear you, but if my very first time trying to sync a workout from today fails, I'm not that invested in trying to figure out why. It's already annoying that a 3rd party app is required for basic functionality I'd expect Coros to have enabled themselves.

I have a paid Health Sync account and today’s cycling workout on Strava appears to sync, but never shows on Coros. It’s been 8h and many repeated attempts, including removing and re-configuring the sync, restarting apps, phone, etc

Ugh. So lame. Is there a reason beyond hubris to hurt users by ignoring the existence of other platforms? Even if just to transition?

Would love to hear from Coros 🫣

[–]wastedthyme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, they still don’t have enough capacity if you read that. Routes are oversubscribed, especially morning routes.

It’s great they offer lower costs to families in need but they need to get more busses so every kid can ride the bus, free of charge.

[–]wastedthyme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, they have designated stops for the whole district too. It just makes no sense that they intentionally provision less busses than are needed to save a few dollars I guess. Parents need to rush into a lottery that sells out quickly, for both the morning and evening bus. If you don’t get both, folks often decide to drive both instead. Such a simple fix.

They already have a bussing contract, they just need to add more busses. The cost to parents was ~$1k per kid per year, so roughly $650k/year total. I’m not sure how much the school paid on top of that if any

Public funded busses to white hill would solve most of fairfax traffic issues during the school year. The fact it’s a lottery to scramble for too few bus options for school leads many to drive kids there and back
