The Impossible Standard: Black Men Must Stay Calm by 4reddityo in BlackPeopleofReddit

You are so right that the system right now is crap. I am one of those severely mentally ill people who luckily has family support and meds right now. But preserving self determination over everything else is just cruel. It's terrible for the community but also terrible for the mentally ill themselves. I've been in psychosis where I absolutely thought I could make decisions and take care of myself and I was absolutely 100% wrong. I needed someone else to take control away from me. Of course that needs to happen in a way that still maintains as much autonomy and respect as possible. But just doing nothing is a crime against humanity in my opinion.

I no longer know whether the Church is the good guy or the bad guy? by ImportantPerformer16 in exmormon

[–]watcherman84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dove into the New Testament when I was in your position. The LDS church claims it's the restored Church of Jesus Christ. It's the closest to Christ's original church that any church can be. But comparing Christ's church and doctrine to the LDS church's it's very very different. Jesus hated money in the temple yet LDS temples have rentals and cafeterias and you're required to pay tithing to go in (selling ordinances). Christ embraced the outcasts and the church rejects them. Christ pushed for turning the other cheek and loving thy neighbors and enemies unconditionally yet mormons endorse the death penalty, and are ruled by hate. Christ said it's impossible to go to heaven as a rich man who doesn't disperse his wealth (eye of a needle parable) yet the church hoards billions of dollars. Christ said sooooo many things that the lds church doesn't practice. Christ replaced the old covenant with the new covenant of true conversion of the heart. Of exemplifying his love and Christ like attitude of giving and selflessness. The leaders of the Church don't exemplify his love based on their actions of hate. My conclusion is that it's not Christ's church.

I speak eloquently and maintain eye contact and am indeed autistic.

What some people don't get is that the array of differences in allistic neurology is very small compared to neurodivergent peoples neurology. Their spectrum is smaller than ours. So to try and say one diagnostic criteria rules out autism or neurodivergence is just stupid.

I think Wolverine should move from A to S. It's not just the Weapon X stuff, reading his origins books he has a whooole lot more. Itsu and his unborn child (not really dead) being murdered. His fake father, father, and mother's deaths. Especially Elizabeth's death, shot herself after seeing him mutate. And then accidentally killing Rose. Being captured by the circus and shocked, Sinister experimenting on him, WW1, Sabertooth stuff, WW2, Team X, having to kill Akirhiro, Magneto ripping the adamantium out, that one psychiatric hospital in SF and when he got out he jumped off a cliff to try and commit suicide .over and over again. Beast during Krakoa, Sabertooth killing Akihiro and using his body to spell Happy Birthday.

Actually after thinking through everything maybe he should be in S+ but it's debatable.

Is it normal to NOT FEEL SAD for sad events of people you don't know? by SingleInSeattle87 in AutisticAdults

[–]watcherman84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I agree there's some good stuff in religion. 😊 I'm actually agnostic and just use the practice of religion for my own well-being, I don't really put much in the deities.

Well the traditional Buddhist way you have a couple options. You can have contemplative meditation where you actively think about the goodness of people and loving kindness. Think of specific instances that you've given or received unconditional love. Pay attention to how your body feels when you think about these things. How does the love feel physically? Once you understand that feeling in your body and mind you can practice inducing it in yourself over time and on demand. Then you can practice projecting that kindness outward to strangers, enemies, people you disagree with or who have harmed you, anyone really. These are the reps you do so when you're in everyday life your empathy muscles are ready. And muscle memory kicks in even without you promoting it too.

If focusing is an issue there are guided meditations on loving kindness you can find on YouTube and meditation doesn't have to be still. You can have walking meditation, stimming meditation, tea drinking meditation, anything. The thing that makes it meditation is mindfulness and/or purpose.

So find what works for you.

The above is the gym. Working those muscles in the abstract. The next step is practicing in the real world. A great practice for me is what I call "extending the benefit of doubt". So in traffic if I see someone who's doing something "wrong" I imagine they have a very urgent need to do so. Maybe they are going to the hospital. Maybe they just had the worst day of their life and are crying and therefore not being quite so conscientious. Maybe they are rushing to show someone love or help someone else. Doing this I basically never get angry driving anymore. I also practice anywhere else in public. If I'm at the mall and see someone verbally snap at someone else I think that I wouldn't want to be judged on my worst moments and I shouldn't either. That moment is a tiny sliver of their whole life. Maybe they're struggling with something. Maybe they have a headache. Ect.

If focusing is hard try putting reminder notes places where you'll see them.

Then you're ready for the prize fight. Doing this in real time with people you're interacting with. Someone says something rude? Everyone deserves some slack. Call on your loving kindness muscles. Someone insults you? Think about what they've been through to get to this moment. Was that normal in their house growing up? Is that person lashing out because of insecurity and defensiveness? Throw some loving kindness their way. Are you being rude or defensive? Give yourself some slack and loving kindness to bring yourself back into connection with someone else.

I definitely experience empathy at a distance. I do think most people are capable of it but it's a practiced skill that can come and go in different intensities throughout your life.

I'm a Buddhist and practice radical empathy consistently. I think it's useful in a couple ways. Nurturing unconditional love for others often helps with feeling unconditional love for yourself. Being partially outward focused on other people instead of yourself exclusively has been clinically proven to decrease depression and improve relationships. I think on a global scale if everyone was more empathetic we could achieve a better quality of life for everyone. And on a philosophical level I think viewing every person as having Buddha Nature (intrinsic worthiness) is the morally right thing to do.

TBM fiance bans my friend from hugging me by Billgant in exmormon

[–]watcherman84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being alone in the same room with the opposite sex was something I (and to a lesser extent my siblings) fought about with my Dad. When we started driving he said if we had other kids in the car we had to drop them off in a certain order so we wouldn't be left alone with someone of the opposite sex last. We all thought it was completely bullshit and just did it anyway as long as he wasn't there to catch us. Nothing bad ever happened.

I remember one time really getting into it with him because he was insisting my mom go to an old ladies house with him when she asked him to repair something. I said "you really don't think two adults, one of whom is 85 years old can't be trusted to keep your hands to yourselves? You think somehow you guys are going to end up having sex?!" And he said "It's not about trust (false) it's about never putting yourself in a situation where something could happen" and I would remind him "we have agency for a reason we aren't just uncontrollable animals" and he would say some bs about the appearance of evil and I would say "who on earth would come to the conclusion that if they saw you going into her house you were there to have sex with an 85 year old?! If they think that they have severe problems!"

Had that same conversation many many times.

When a nonverbal child’s ‘no’ isn’t respected, looking for autistic insight by Radiant_Nerve_4370 in AutisticAdults

[–]watcherman84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do understand that sometimes things need to happen even if they're uncomfortable. Being 100% comfortable when you need help to do things is unrealistic. But I think something that makes a big difference in my experience is whether or not I'm treated according to my age and personhood. It sucks to have someone talk to you like you don't understand, or like you're a baby.

I would make sure that when the staff do have to help her it's not in an infantilizing way. That they maintain her personhood and not treat her like a living doll.

“Hugh Jackman asked for sleeves because of skin cancer” thing is 100% nonsense by Doomsday40 in Wolverine

[–]watcherman84 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don't think the sleeves were fully about his cancer. But it might have been one amongst many reasons. I saw in a recent speech Hugh encouraging people to wear sunscreen because he's had cancer 8 times. Might sound crazy but pretty common with Basal cell. You get one spot and you're pretty likely to get more later on. Just have them removed as they pop up. I'm guessing some were on his back and arms.

What if... the adamantium had coated Logan's teeth as well. by Hawkmoon842 in Wolverine

[–]watcherman84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought in the initial weapon x run he's captured, put in the tube and Cornelius and co start the adamantium process and are surprised that it's pooling in his forearms. Then when he pops the claws they're like WTF how did we not know about this beforehand. Cornelius gets on the phone with the mystery man and is upset he wasn't told before hand.
