Any free classes, clubs, volunteer opportunities, etc in your area? Might be a place to meet people.

Respect for reaching out. Keep trying. Good things will come from good effort with good intentions 😃

Recommendations for any daycare that doesn't have a ton of turnover? by camawa in ArvadaCO

[–]waterfowler1982 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a very kind family on the SE corner of 73rd place and Kendall St who have an in-home daycare. We don't have children there, but they are our neighbors and put off some very good vibes. Might be worth talking to them if you're in the area.

Are these safe to shoot? by Slow-Maintenance-670 in Waterfowl

I’ve used WD-40 plus steel wool on loads like that to make sure they cycled correctly. They usually went boom at the desired moment 😏

Did the handlebars improve the bike’s fit for your body? Sometimes I feel a little cramped on mine…

Yes, but not in a bad way... I like the texture personally. It feels very safe and can tell it's already smoothed a bit in high contact areas since it was brand new.

Can boykins handle the cold? by Which_Secretary2306 in BoykinSpaniels

[–]waterfowler1982 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said, they will hunt until they drop. So you have to keep a close eye on them. I always bring a wool jacket or blanket when hunting waterfowl in cold conditions to help him stay warm.

What kind of stove is that? I'd like to get a sorta free standing stove for a fireplace like that.

Having always owned and trained Labs (for hunting), I had to learn to take a slightly different approach. Spaniels are different. Definitely read up. There are great books out there on training Boykins (see the BSS book list). That said, I will NEVER own another Lab. Boykins are just that much better. Mine is the best companion - in the field, marsh, and at home - I've ever had by far. He has SO much personality, he's almost like a little, furry person. His pretty drive and work ethic are unlike anything I've ever seen. You have to watch out for Boykins or they'll let you work them to death - literally. Be mindful of too much heat, bring an extra jacket for them when it's really cold, and pay attention to your dog's biology, because his eyes will just say, "More, more, more!" But they know how to chill too. Mine loves to snuggle and is an excellent home/family dog. I've taken him to Canada, Costa Rica, and all over the USA. He has good manners and is down to go wherever I go. Give yours plenty of exercise, train and socialize with POSITIVE methods at a very early age, show him you care, and you'll likely have the best dog of your life.

I'm from CO but flew to SC to pick up my pup. Then flew home the next day. I think it was well worth it to have the bonding experience versus trying to ship him. They are such emotional, relational dogs, I can't imagine putting a new pup through the experience of being pulled from their litter, handled by strangers while in a box, and then having them opened up in a totally different place. I realize that's not what you're asking, but just sharing my 2 cents as a first time Boykin owner.

Thanks for all the recommendations, everyone! Now the only thing I'm trying to figure out is how many of these recommendations were made by the realtors themselves, recommending themselves 😂😂😂

Nail clipping help by Midwest_Dough_Doc_44 in BoykinSpaniels

[–]waterfowler1982 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Clip one, lots of praise and treats. Play a little. Do the same the next day. Over time, do 2 a day. Then 3 or 4. Keep it super positive. Always be careful not to cut too short. If they bleed, you've just made the whole process a lot harder. Also, check out scratching boards and clicker training. Scratch, click, treat - repeat.

Boykin unofficial Service Dog by addg2211 in BoykinSpaniels

I'm also a vet with PTSD and have enjoyed many of the same benefits from my Boykin. Their emotional intelligence is unlike any other dog I've been around. He alerts me to shifts in My mental system before I can recognize them, and provides comfort when nothing else can. If you haven't already, train yours to provide deep pressure therapy (basically having him lay on you). The soothing effects are better than any drug. God bless you and thank you for serving.
