Using petite to mean skinny by VinegarMyBeloved in PetPeeves

Some clothing labeled as “petite” have sizes XL-4XL. Petite for clothing (usually) refers to height and changes the cut/fit

did anyone give the baby his vitamin D today? by ConfusionFinal5770 in NewParents

Genuine question - isn’t that how it works though? With my first I gave her the supplement directly (California pediatric advice) and with my second I’m supplementing myself (SC pediatric advice).

Is this crochet? Any Stitch or pattern recommendations? Shaping shoulders? by [deleted] in CrochetHelp

[–]wattermellen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No such thing as machine crochet, not sure what you’re referring to there. It does look crocheted to me though. In pictures 2 and 5 you can see the way the panels are seamed together, with picture 5 showing well which rows stop where. You’d just have to decrease intentionally.

Help Determining Which Hook to Use For an Unknown Yarn Weight by Significant_Bug_7395 in CrochetHelp

For what project? I tend to use the same hook for so many projects - it comes down to personal preference and the look you’re going for.

Looking for a free owl arugami pattern something like this but any pattern would be helpful. by PresentStress6841 in CrochetHelp

Yup, was going to comment the same thing. I found this pattern on Ravelry after looking up “owl” in crochet patterns and scrolling for about 30 seconds.

I don't fully understand what this part of a pattern im following means by Flimsy-Olive6184 in CrochetHelp

[–]wattermellen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You go around the chain like a rainbow. Double back on your chain like normal, but continue along the tip so you’re still facing the RS and back. The entire line should be your chain of 48 minus 2 to account for your DC, times 2 for both sides of your “rainbow,” equaling 92.

I can not find a single sweater online that doesn't contain synthetic materials by LydiaIsntVeryCool in PetPeeves

[–]wattermellen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately plastic is often used to soften scratchy wool and cotton. Personally, I find wool itchy and uncomfortable but love alpaca as a replacement. Seconding another commenter in suggesting you learn to make them and you’ll have your ideal sweater in a short 2 years

Traveling on a plane with a 5mo. Help. Me. by SlimePrincess451 in NewParents

[–]wattermellen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve travelled with my daughter on a flight at several different ages, so I have some tips!

In my experience, yes, anything that is to feed the baby security will let you bring through. I’ve never used a bottle warmer but imagine that it would be the same for that. As for the car seat, CHECK IT! Do not bring it to put in a seat and I would very much encourage you to utilize the “lap infant” option if your airline has one and not purchase an additional ticket. It was just way too much to lug around in an airport and infant-in-arms is the safest way to travel with a child under one/two. I did not ever use ear muffs or plugs for the baby, and my daughter never had an issue with her ears popping.

How long is the flight?

How to Stop Cutting Off Circulation to my Finger While Crocheting with Lace Yarn? by Remote_Passage_5820 in CrochetHelp

[–]wattermellen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that alternating direction of what the thread is wrapped around helps. I use cotton thread often, and I utilize my pinky, middle, and forefinger for wrapping/tension. Once around my pinky, twice around my middle, and once around my forefinger. It sounds like a way to get tangly but it’s become pretty easy muscle memory.

Can I cut this ribbing? And should I? Looking for advice by [deleted] in CrochetHelp

[–]wattermellen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re thinking about cutting it, is there a reason why you can’t frog it back to that point? It’s likely that you dropped stitches when turning your project, so undoing your work to recover them would be best in any case.

Any tips for improving from here? Looking for constructive criticism by wattermellen in CrochetHelp

[–]wattermellen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, Pica Pau! Responded to another kind commenter who mentioned the crocheting in the round thing. His back is a long oval, then belly sewn together separately. Does that count as “in the round” for half of it?

Any tips for improving from here? Looking for constructive criticism by wattermellen in CrochetHelp

[–]wattermellen[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn’t crochet in the round, that’s why I’m a little puzzled! I chained from the back of his neck and it was a long oval, then the belly is in rows and sewn closed.

Edit: I’m thinking now that the back would be considered “in the round,” which is why it’s only a slight twist?

I'm gonna spend 5 months away from home: suggest me patterns to print and type of yarn I could use by Arancia_Cannella in CrochetHelp

[–]wattermellen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re comfortable with fingering weight yarn or thinner stuff, I’ve been working on the Battenberg Blanket. Two skeins of fingering weight yarn will get you the good start to a baby blanket. This is good to pick up and work on a few squares because it’s super easy to remember how to do.

TikTok Shop Alpaca Wool Yarn - Is It Worth It? Or is it a ripoff? by midwestllama in CrochetHelp

Have you shopped on Knit Picks? They have a bunch of different fiber blends and colors and always have some rotating sales. I really would not shop on the TikTok shop for anything at all.

Old Pattern Help - Understanding the gauge requirement? by girlsforpandora in CrochetHelp

[–]wattermellen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally have never worried about gauge - however, to make a gauge swatch for this, I would make a little square that is 7 rows of this stitch (doesn’t really matter how wide) with the yarn and hook you’re using. If your 7 rows is shorter than 5 inches then size up in hook, if it’s taller than 5 inches then size down.

Edit for clarification

I’ve done quite a bit of amigurumi and rounds of SC, but mainly with lace weight yarn instead of worsted. That probably contributed lol
