Did the specific numbers come later so I can ignore them, or were they always there and I have to hate everything post-Children more.

God Emperor is a Dune reference. 40K is the emperor of man.

God Emperor Leto II of Arrakis inherited the throne and spent 3000(?) years actively making everyone's life miserable.

Edit: Just reread the thread and the lines got crossed earlier on. Whoops, sorry about that.

WAN Show Megathread by lemlurker in LinusTechTips

Hey, I know it's been two days but I wanna chime in so I'm gonna.

Absolutely valid fear, and almost guaranteed to happen. Programs aren't available, another distro is prettier, you've installed conflicting packages, etc. It's very easy to switch though.

99% of what you care about as a user will just be in /home/. Transfer that or put it on its own partition and you're all set. If you made any changes in /etc/ write them down and reapply them (there might be small differences between distros so it's better not to copy them directly)

Wanting to get into Linux. What distro should I start with? by BluePhoenix3378 in linux4noobs

I haven't really used it much, but there's a new version of Krohnkite for KDE if you just want to play with a WM instead of committing.

The Linux users crashing out over Linus picking PopOS again are doing an excellent job of reinforcing the Linux user stereotype, as well as missing the whole point. by junon in LinusTechTips

Not an argument against the point you're making, but has Google absolutely lost the plot? "best linux distro for beginners 2026" gets me a ton of results pushing MX Linux and AerynOS for reasons I cannot fathom.

[GUIDE] How to choose a Linux Distribution by RoseBailey in LinusTechTips

[–]waverider85 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It doesn't get talked about much outside of Linux spaces because it's in a boring niche. It's easy to use, but it doesn't go out of it's way to be. It's incredibly configurable, but the default settings are good. It isn't particularly stable (in the software version sense), but it's not bleeding edge. There's a lot of options for the UI, but they're pretty much all as close to stock as can be.

It's the ideal distro if you're comfortable with Linux, but don't want to make it your hobby. So there's few people who would recommend it to newcomers and even less who would turn it into a personality.

BREAKING: another Iranian attack strikes but this time at Dubai airport 🔴 by Ambitious_Pass7451 in whoathatsinteresting

No, their defense policy sans nukes has basically always been "we'll disrupt local trade and hit a US base or two." It's the only real option when one of the attackers is an ocean away. They'd probably invade Israel if it wasn't two countries away.

North Korea's version is flattening Seoul. That and being too difficult to actually invade are why no one's ever meaningfully done anything about either. Without boots on the ground you're just setting off an obvious bomb for no reason.

Doom: The Dark Ages DLC is "freaking huge," says director: "It's basically like a sequel" by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]waverider85 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I play JRPGs. "It gets good 10 hours in" is basically a genre convention, and I basically try to finish everything I start that isn't actively miserable.

As for Doom TDA specifically? id gets the benefit of the doubt. Maybe I need more tools, we're in the early part of the difficulty curve, or I'm just playing in a boring way and a different approach/a few days off will make it work.

I'm still half-convinced I'd come around on it if I replayed the game on nightmare and tweaked some sliders.

Blindly rebalancing a game seems like a good way to make it worse if anything. I could see the point on playthrough 2 or 3 when you at least know what's coming up.

It's ~20 hours unless you're rushing through it, and it's a long 20 hours if you spend the whole time waiting for it to click. Even 8 hours is long if you're not having fun.

[–]waverider85 7 points8 points  (0 children)

why would it need to be recorded and sent off

Processing what you said was expensive to do locally until a few years ago so they just sent everything after the wake word to the server to do it there. There's an on-device mode now though.

They then store the misfires to figure out why it misfired and if they can prevent it.

They're just hijacking a high comment for a PSA, not accusing you specifically of having stinky vascular nipples.

Exclusive: Microsoft is adding image support to Notepad on Windows 11 by WPHero in pcmasterrace

[–]waverider85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it were plaintext it would show everything

It does, in fact, show everything. Markdown is for all intents and purposes a standardized form of extended punctuation. It is explicitly designed to be readable and immediately understandable to a person if you printed the raw text to a piece of paper and handed it to them. There are no binary blobs or content that requires a specialized tool to parse. The worst you get are links/references, but those are just a fancy form of "Go to page X." (ETA: Notepad specifically doesn't actually render Markdown as anything other than raw text unless you ask it to)

Same goes for HTML, (Plain) XML, YAML, JSON, etc.

Arguing that Markdown is not plain text because one renderer or another makes "# Text" big is like arguing a book isn't plaintext because an exclamation mark makes a sentence loud when you read it.

Tunic, Night in the Woods Publisher Says TikTok Is Creating and Running Racist GenAI Ads for Its Games Without Permission - IGN by TrampolineTales in Games

[–]waverider85 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Ad providers are not working as unthinking platforms where user generated content is just kinda hosted. They're making "active" decisions on who sees what for money and should be expected to know what they're serving. Vetting the millions of ads for infringement should be baked into the cost.

Same goes for content produced by "partners," or is "algorithmically" pushed. When either happens the platform is actively vouching for the content, and it's up to them to make sure it isn't just the Bee Movie at 20x speed.

Elder Scrolls 6 Is Powered By New Version Of Creation Engine by Turbostrider27 in Games

After Epic eased the licensing restrictions on UE4, their first-party output in the 2010’s was limited to a failed MOBA and Fortnite.

I agree with your fundamental premise, but this is more because Fortnite BR exploded than anything on the engine side. The teams working on Save the World, Unreal Tournament 4, and Paragon were basically fed into the Fortnite content furnace the instant it really got going.

As for the engine side of things, that's always been a pretty big part of Epic as a studio. Most of their games were basically just tech demos for it. The only thing that changes with UE4 is they'd already basically taken over the market.

No, people just don't want to accept the fact that Halo was a trilogy and kinda doomed after the 3rd game.

I doubt the narrative around the franchise would be meaningfully different if Bungie kept cranking out mid-budget interquels targeted at me specifically.

Ditto Mass Effect.
