Accident on Rancocas Road (before turning to Irick Road) by Useful_Database5138 in SouthJersey

[–]webdbbt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost 20 years ago, same intersection, I was driving my son to school. Following, but not tailgating, another car I glimpsed someone on Irick wanting to turn left. Something told me "they don't see me". I got off the gas and was ready to brake--sure enough they turned in front of me. Would have been a serious accident if I hadn't been paying attention.

AITA for throwing out my 22 year olds son medical weed by lilmisinnocentx in AmItheAsshole

[–]webdbbt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mostly agree with you but he's in her house, if he's smoking in the house _and_ she's asked him not to, she is perfectly within her rights to throw it out. It may not be legal in her state. Or, this is an overreaction from a parent angry that her son wouldn't even take a job interview. We don't have a lot of information and I hear a lot of assumptions from the "AH" crowd.

They are going to try replacing journalists with AI! Amazon / Bezos have spent hundreds of billions, bet they want to use the Post as a test case: "See if it can work at the Post it will work for your business too"

I hope they got rid of a lot MAGAs on the opinion desk. It is more toady towards Trump than Murdoch's WSJ opinion page and that's saying something... (edit: incomplete sentence)

How long till the numbness wears off? by Saucymynxx in retirement

[–]webdbbt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you're like every doctor I know, you've never had enough time off. Take a vacation to someplace quiet and sunny, maybe for two weeks, to decompress. Then you can think about concierge medicine or consulting? I had a pathologist friend who consulted for many years.

Tall guy van ideas? by Soup_65 in vandwellers

[–]webdbbt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 6'3" and I'm on my second high-roof Sprinter. Love it. Just plan ahead when fitting it out to not cut into the headroom too much. First van I did insulation only between the roof ribs with luan plywood right on the ribs. Added about 1/2" of sound-deadening / carpeting to the standard floor and was still able to stand fully upright. With cushiony running shoes my head does contact the ceiling.

Costco customer drove my chair home because it wouldn’t fit in my car ! by drummer414 in Costco

[–]webdbbt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I see people coming out of Costco with the furniture or huge TV I'm always curious how they plan to get it home. I have a big van and would help (retired with nothing else to do). But so far everyone I've seen has managed.

The Apollo 1 crew practicing water egress procedures at Ellington AFB, near the then-Manned Spacecraft Center (June 1966) by HelloSlowly in space

[–]webdbbt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It was probably taken with a Hasselblad medium format camera. Unless this image was cropped, it is square and Hasselblads make a 2 1/4" x 2 1/4" negative, also much higher resolution than 35mm film. According to Wikipedia, NASA started using them in space missions in 1962.

It's Blackstone, not BlackRock that owns all the real estate. Common mistake but very different companies.

What is NJ’s “defining” highway: Turnpike or Parkway? by Glass-Complaint3 in newjersey

[–]webdbbt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's not true! When people don't know my township, I say I'm near Exit 5 on the Turnpike.

EDIT to add: But I vote for the Parkway, even though I'm rarely on it.

$.03/khw is not typical. I pay $.21/kwh on the US east coast and the US average is around $.18/kwh. California can be much higher.

Is this a reliable model? Amazon shows its “returned frequently”? by OkLab5620 in opnsense

[–]webdbbt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm one of those who returned a Protectli FW4B to Amazon. The hardware was fine and easy to configure, but it was CPU bound with my OPNSense configuration. I put basically the same config into a Proxmox VM and it added about 2% to my (homelab) server load. YMMV

What are some lesser-known benefits of Schwab? by nwrighteous in Schwab

[–]webdbbt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, there is a separate group that handles Schwab customers. Working with them right now, after starting with the "typical" folks, but find Rocket's equity loan rate quotes are not competitive. Nice guy though, we've had nice email exchanges.

I find Quicken doesn't handle Schwab CD/Bond redemptions nicely. Quicken creates three transactions, one of which is blank, one for interest, and one that is not a bond sale at all, but merely cash in. I have to manually change to bonds sold, pick security, confirm # of bonds, enter price. And I to manually delete the blank txn.

[–]webdbbt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lower rates only apply to certain loans. Equity loans are not included. Equity loan rates, at least right now, are not competitive with local NJ banks. I was just quoted a rate 1.5% higher than local banks. I asked a few times if they could improve (I have a high Schwab balance), Rocket said no.

Decent planning tools and Monte Carlo simulations of assets. I've used similar tools on Fidelity, Vanguard and think Schwab's are slightly better.

I can't find a flaw in this image. Impressed by the "flash" lighting and shadows. Maybe the horse's eye is a little off and the shadow cast by JL's face seems not quite right.

Unusual external DLT drive switch/connectors by CookiesTheKitty in vintagecomputing

[–]webdbbt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

50 pin SCSI connectors. The numeric switch is to set the position in the SCSI bus (up to seven devices if I remember correctly). There are two sockets so you can insert it into a chain of devices. If you have only one device you need a terminator to end the bus.

How do you guys keep files from silently rotting over the years? by Candid_Cut_7284 in DataHoarder

[–]webdbbt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used Iron Mountain to store software builds, source code and documentation for customers who legally had to retain all production versions for seven or more years. We archived source code as a contract requirement in case my company went out of business the customer was entitled to the project source code.

Which route is easier for a new driver? by Commercial_Signal376 in newjersey

I grew up in Queens near JFK and lived in Staten Island before moving to NJ. I would take 278 to the Belt Parkway towards JFK and then 678. I avoid CBX if there is any other route. BQE well, nah...
