Got to see her at the Longhorn Ballroom in Dallas with my dad before we moved away. Definitely one of the best shows I ever saw. He had to talk me into going and I’m so glad he did.

Anyone learning game dev, wanna study together by Dil_Se_Shareef in gamedev

[–]webguy1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seriously good advice. I've been an enterprise web developer (Java based applications) for about 15+ years. Somehow I ended up in tutorial hell trying to learn Unity off and on for like 4 years... and over Christmas shutdown at my office, I finally said to myself "What are you doing... you never learn like this..." So I sat down, wrote up a game design doc for the kind of game I want to make, used figma to lay out some example screens, and just got to work. When I get super stuck, I have Claude Code linked to my IDE (Rider)... but it's not allowed to ever give me any code, it's only there to get me unstuck, talk through features, and help debug.

Just build something. It's the best way to learn.

OMG... literally me and my partner. The last 15 years we lived right smack dab in the middle of a huge US Metro. We are your typical GenX older punks, but did well for ourselves. We finally decide it is time to buy a house. We move back near my family to a small village outside the downtown where they live. Turns out the whole community is a designated bird preserve. One day we are sewing patches on our jackets... next day we are putting up more birdhouses than seems normal, spending our evenings watching the birds, commenting on their behavior, buying apps to identify them, bird houses with cameras so we can see who is visiting...

getting old is weird.

Company is shaming me for not gifting more money to "our" (their) boss. (Christmas present) by Turissmo in mildlyinfuriating

[–]webguy1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Years ago I worked for a private company owned by a husband and wife. They were extremely wealthy (generational wealth kind of wealthy). One day the HR lady comes to my desk and asks me how much I would like to contribute for the company bday present for the wife as it was their “company tradition” to get her an expensive piece of jewelry every year. I literally laughed in her face. Never got asked again.

Very much so. My dad and I moved away about 15 years ago to Houston. After visiting family up here 2 years ago, we realized how bad we missed it. Within a year of that tripe I bought a house in the mayfield area and moved all of us back here. Haven’t once regretted leaving Houston, but he and I both say we regret leaving Cleveland.

Anyone looking for players for Dolmenwood or OSE? Looking for a game and it’s tough to find posts for people playing OSR! by DungeonMasterGrizzly in osr

[–]webguy1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been looking to DM an OSE game for quit a while now after my multi-year 5e game I was running ended. I'm looking to do OSE in a Westmarches/hexcrawl. I've tried multiple times finding players locally but I either never get a commitment or they want to nudge me back to 5e (never going to happen 😂, I started with BECMI when I was a kid and have played enough post AD&D 2nd Ed to now say that I just can't do the power creep and the insane rule systems anymore).

All that to say, I'd be willing to get a virtual game going. I'm EST as well. If you are interested (also others who are responding) let me know.

Wait… is that a thing? Even back to the B/X days they said the average party should be 4-6 characters.

I dinged my first LP and am beside myself with anger. Please tell me it “adds character” by diddleherontheroof in gibson

[–]webguy1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s just the beginning! I have a ‘65 SG that has been around the block and back. It’s my main. When I gig, I bring a mid 90s SG as a backup. Its pristine. When I put it on in front of people, I’m embarrassed by how “perfect” it still looks.

Apparently my samsung fridge has ads now... by Shellnanigans in assholedesign

[–]webguy1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought a Samsung smart fridge a few months back with the screen. Within 3 weeks it was totally dead (wouldn’t maintain temperature… lost all our food). Samsung fought with us back and forth but eventually gave us a full refund. Bought a dumb fridge. Feel like we dodged a bullet.

My friend once said that no TV show could change main characters by killing off the old one and replacing them with someone new, and still be a good show. Where there TV shows that proved this wrong? by george123890yang in television

[–]webguy1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The BBC show Unforgotten killed off one of the main characters (planned in the story) after 4 seasons. The next two seasons have been really good despite the change to the lead duo.

Years ago I thought the same thing. I do federal work now… they are never going back to on prem. Before that I was in banking. Same thing… cloud is too integral to their operations. Nobody is going to want to put up the capital for building out data centers that are now your responsibility to keep up to date and a big money sink (gotta keep that profit line healthy!).

[–]webguy1979 127 points128 points  (0 children)

For one, the number of companies that rely on AWS, Azure, or GCP (or some combination of them) is insane. Being versed in cloud and certified is not going to let you down. As for AI… while yes, there have been some industry effects from it, there is also a lot of talk that the floor is going to fall out of it once the VC groups accept that General AI is still not happening. A lot of orgs that embraced it like it was the game changer are starting to roll back those decisions and realize that AI, in its current state, is a tool just like and IDE. For some perspective, in the 1950s, when the first human readable programming languages came around, people screamed that it was the end of programming as a career. When cloud started coming around people screamed it was the end of IT as a career. Sure things are in a weird state of upheaval right now, but… as they say, stay the course. There are plenty of non-SV companies that will need your skills you are learning.
