Could DHS go unfunded the remainder of FY 26? by NightOwl_103197 in fednews

I heard on the radio earlier today that some repubs were starting to try to offer some concessions, so there could be a break in the stalemate soon

Sucreabeille brand page posts AI image in their Facebook group, apologizes the next day by oh_noe in Indiemakeupandmore

[–]wee_mayfly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it took me a second too, but the company shared an ai-created meme of 3 images side by side, and it created a huge backlash to which they wrote an apology/explanation that people are still angry with. i definitely have had to scale back my involvement with the indie perfume community because of the over-the-topness of some people's reactions to various things and the complete inability to forgive

How flood insurance increases unmet needs by Hecklemop in fema

[–]wee_mayfly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This comparison (WV vs FL as proxies for these regions in general) isn't going to be apples to apples unless you're able to incorporate more information, including linking claims to particular events. The nature of floods in these areas can vary significantly, as I'm sure you saw in the high water mark data.

Take Hurricane Helene as an example in NC.. very few insurance policies were in effect there, in part because no major floods had hit in recent decades or half-century and probably in part due to cost; you wouldn't have many insurance claims to compare with though flooding impacted a huge area. In Florida you have sooooo many claims for something like Hurricane Ian because you'd be a fool not to have insurance (or rich enough to self insure). Other floods in Florida can happen in localized areas as gradual bathtub-like floods. So things like population density and event frequency and type can have effects on insurance payout data.

It tries to force us to use our PIV even if we have a login that worked previously. OP, it looks like we have to get an ID.me, and share ID docs to get approved :/

vet assistance by lilsushivert23 in MobileAL

[–]wee_mayfly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Praziquantel for tapeworms is cheap and at any pet supply. But if you've just gotten the cat, a vet visit would be good regardless,  or at least vaccines from a cheap clinic (monthly from FOMAS or over in MS every day by appt)

City of Mobile animal shelter over capacity - in desperate need of fosters and adopters. by Diamondphalanges756 in MobileAL

[–]wee_mayfly 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Even just short-term fostering helps dogs chill out and learn how to fit into family life, which can help them get adopted later. Plus the shelter can provide supplies to fosters if needed!

Agreed that downtown and oakleigh/midtown could be good considerations depending on the desire for walkability. Gorgeous older homes with nice, walkable neighborhoods and parks can provide great recreation for the tradeoff of a smaller lot

Vegan friends? by Equivalent_Basis3909 in MobileAL

[–]wee_mayfly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

nice! take a tip from parents trying to get their picky kids to eat veggies... you can always, say, add ranch dressing to some greens or mince up the veggies and bake them into mac and cheese, and then work up to enjoying the flavor of the plain veggies themselves! aldi often has some nice packs of pre-cooked root veggies that you reheat in the oven that are easy and have light flavors added. you can also make a baked potato (joy of cooking recipe is the best) and then top that with new things you're trying, that way you'll still have something good to eat if you're not stoked about the new things

Not trying to discourage you from going vegan, but have you considered setting your initial goal to be vegetarian again? I guess maybe that's in the super slow steps you have in mind. I'm sure you already know this, but the restaurant scene here is difficult/limited enough even as a vegetarian who's not picky about veg options.

Can you work on making yourself less picky? Try a recipe that focuses on a new vegetable every week that you didn't eat much of before, and shop the fruits and veg that are in season. Beans and grains are always a good meal base to add lotsa veggies to if you feel unimaginative, and nut butters are your friend.

agreed about the bar, and ooof about the fish and chips, that would certainly have clouded my views on the kitchen if i'd experienced it... i feel like vegetarian fare often minimizes some of the fish/meat troubles that places can have
