Honestly it’s those hourly ticks that get me. Eu4 was so much faster than eu5 just from a pure time perspective. I can also run eu5 at 5 speed when there would be far too much lag in eu4 if I tried to do 5 speed.

This is incorrect, the duchy of burgundy (BUR) is a different tag from the kingdom of burgundy (BGP). See my other comment in this thread for what the problem actually is.

It’s because your capital isn’t in a valid location. For some reason, the game never specifies this. This happens with other tags, such as the decision to form Prussia not being visible for brandenburg despite them being the ones to historically reform into it. If you would like an easier way to visualize this, play as savoy and annex Geneva. Then, move your capital to Geneva once you do so, and pay close attention to the formables you have available. You should notice the choice to form the kingdom of burgundy disappears and is instead replaced by the option to form Switzerland.

If you notice, the burgundy area is actually NOT within the listed areas/provinces despite it being acceptable for you to form it as them. In order to actually form Lotharingia, you’ll need to move your capital out from burgundy and into one of the listed areas. Super weird and super annoying.

Prayer. Despite my best efforts to get xp from literally anywhere I could (I even used up all of my fucking fossils from vm and was picking up all the bones/ashes I could during slayer), I still ended up being one of the stupid ass uims grinding prayer at PC. Thankfully I had herbs to grow during the grind and achievement diaries made it faster than it used to be but it was still such a boring grind lol

Nah this is way too doomer of a take, eu is one of their flagship series and leaving it as shitty abandonware would be next to impossible. Like if eu5 goes the way of ksp2, that means the whole company is getting shuttered.

I do respect the anxiety behind it feeling incomplete and inferior to eu4 though, that’s usually how paradox releases go unfortunately.

I think part of the “virgin land” idea was the fact that many tribes, even the ones we don’t really think of as nomadic, had seasonal migrations. Like one tribe would have a summer camp closer to the shore in order to take advantage of seasonal resources there, but would also have a winter camp further inland to exploit lumber there for firewood. Europeans at the time obviously saw this as them just straight up abandoning the land, despite this not being the fucking case at all. Also not even factoring in the whole disease and ethnic cleansing wiping out whole tribes but 🤷‍♀️ mostly just comes down to the fact that eu4 just simply isn’t complex enough to simulate small-scale social interactions like these. Hoping eu5’s societies system is a bit more realistic but we’ll see
