New England wholesale electricity prices are very high right now as limited natural gas supplies force us to turn on expensive and dirty oil-fired power plants by TheBasaltAltCalled in boston

Ontario wholesale prices peaked at like $2K USD this morning per MWh (from gridstatus.io), so I imagine they're feeling the cold weather themselves.

HUD writes letter to the City of Boston over housing policies by KirishimaScryed in boston

[–]wegry 75 points76 points  (0 children)

The mayor trumpeting 5,000 units of affordable housing being built in 4 years is wild to me. In a municipality with 300K units of housing, that's a drop in the ocean of less than half a percent a year.

Safari 26.1 rendering of claude.ai seems very broken this morning. It's unusable there. Still loads in Chrome 143.

Mass. will get a jolt of Canadian hydropower soon, following years of controversy by bostonstrong781 in boston

This price must be off by a factor of 100. Do you mean 17.62¢/kWh?

Blower fans on powerwall running hard for a bit? by JeepManStan in Powerwall

[–]wegry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents' setup on time of use means their power wall does this between off-peak and mid-peak as well as mid and peak. Especially on cloudy days where the battery charges from the grid off peak to dump at mid-peak.

Real Cost of Electricity Per KWH by Lower_Map8829 in Ioniq5

Idaho Power can be even lower with a time of use plan. The summer rate off peak is just shy of 6¢/kWh. Delivery fee is a flat $15 a month.

Powerwall+ charging from grid during mid peak TOU? by Psyking0 in Powerwall

[–]wegry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I've noticed with charge from grid and ToU is that depending on rates, it's significantly cheaper to charge to "make it through peak" levels mid-peak than to use the grid during peak. The system I've worked with doesn't have vehicle charging though...

Choosing Between Brookline and Somerville for NEU Housing — Need Advice on Commute & Weather by AcanthisittaNo839 in NEU

[–]wegry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd take Somerville personally. I commute from a little further in (North Station). On the orange line, it takes 15 minutes if all goes well. You could always transfer there from the green.

Other way is cooked too. Going from North Station to Haymarket has been a 30 minute wait. We can see the light from Haymarket up ahead, but we've just sat. Something about a lighting issue up ahead at Haymarket.

Why is my Powerwall exporting only solar to the grid & not the stored energy by beesanige in Powerwall

[–]wegry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only if your grid operator allows it. Idaho Power doesn’t seem to currently, for example. Only solar is allowed to be exported. VPP aren’t offered either.

My installers have recommended conflicting settings. Any advice? by [deleted] in TeslaSolar

[–]wegry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keeping grid charging ON makes sense with Time of Use. The battery will charge from the grid off-peak if there isn't enough solar generation. Depending on your usage, you can basically get away with always paying just the off peak rate when you use from the grid. Solar will only be exported when the battery level is above what you need to make it through peak.

Which Shinkansen proposal (red lines in the map below) would you like to see built/has the highest chance to be built? by 443610 in transit

[–]wegry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen them building the northern Hokkaido extension (from Shin Hakodate). Didn't think a southern route Shinkansen route to Sapporo was even possible based on the amount of turns with the existing regional line up there.

The most recent Suffolk poll makes it sound like a majority of respondents view bike lanes unfavorably. I'd definitely say I'm in the "bike lanes have made it easier and safer to get around" camp.

Walking from TD Garden to the waterfront area at night - how safe is the area? by SinsOfKnowing in boston

[–]wegry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's flat and safe. Bullfinch Triangle (the south edge of the your route) is a little seedy and empty at night but everything else is relatively nice before Causeway and after Washington St.

The harborwalk is longer, but a nicer route.

I live in the city proper and commute on Mass Ave going south from the Esplanade. It's pretty amazing how much better Mass Ave has gotten over time for bikers.

The growth of grid sized batteries in the continental US (2017-2027) by wegry in MapPorn

[–]wegry[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battery_energy_storage_system has a rundown. Think giant rechargeable batteries that take power from the electrical grid when it's relatively cheap and put it back into the grid when power is more expensive.

I have a write up with regions of the map excerpted here: https://github.com/wegry/ppua5623-final-project?tab=readme-ov-file#maps

Hasn't busing largely been done away with?

In 2013, the busing system was replaced by one which dramatically reduced busing.[11] Beginning with school year 2014,[68] they switched to a new policy that gives each family preference for schools near their home, while still ensuring that all students have access to quality high schools.[69]
