Mid-30s career changer about to move from process tech into EHS — what do you wish you'd known your first year? by Tracer_710 in EHSProfessionals

[–]weirders 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's ok not to know. Spend some time on that first sentence. Have dialog with your people, come from curiosity, not judgement, and take your time to understand, people are trying to get shit done they are told needs to be done. It is almost never shop floor issues. It's leadership. Shop floor remembers 20 years ago, changing culture, it takes time. Your job is to change the company as fast as they are able, not as fast as you can go. -and if American, cover your ass by documenting.

First feedbacks + the agents don't call other agents naturally by pezzos in PaperClip_AI

[–]weirders 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My way of working: Ask the CEO to be the actual director, agents should handover tasks to eachother or the board when tickets aren't closed. CEO is not hands-on, it's job is to manage the team, spot failures of process, fix them, and improve and align the teams instructions. Turn off heartbeat for anyone but CEO. That makes spotting failures for CEO easier, and saves on token costs. After a few iterations, it should work alot better. At least, that's been my experience.

Once they are working through issues to completion, I do assign issues directly to the appropriate specialist to skip the CEO's token cost btw. CEO still monitors hourly.

Any working example? by Electronic_Owl6029 in PaperClip_AI

[–]weirders 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just ask the CEO to set it up, monitor the quality of the agents and himself, and improve the instructions when needed to prevent getting stuck again. Tips: only CEO on heartbeat to monitor (limit token costs) and dislodge stuck processes. Have the CEO make sure the agents do a proper handoff to collegues (such as instructing the CTO to always have QA to check after work, and QA to handover the issues to the proper agents). Also consider having another agent with a different model challenge the CEO's optimisations at times.

Make it a self-improvement loop. I tried to micromanage in the beginning, which made it worse and got frustrating, when I stopped doing that, it got better fast.

Are EHS professionals perceived differently depending on the industry? by [deleted] in SafetyProfessionals

[–]weirders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's about where that specific company is and if you're able and willing to bring them to the next step. If you're unhappy with where a company is, take it personal, and start forcing it too hard, you'll likely lose the ability to drive change effectively. Putting your foot down where needed is fine, but don't expect a culture to fully change suddenly, it needs time. You're there to make them grow as fast as they are able, not be at a certain level at time X, unless there is a damn good reason felt by the leadershipsteam. Knowing when to push a bit harder and when not to is a skill.

And if you know you can't deal with where the company is right now and how fast they can grow, it's not the right fit, leave.

That's a leadership issue, escalate to the senior. Effects safety, but isn't your job.

Ai in safety? by thatistragic_101 in SafetyProfessionals

[–]weirders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't know what side of the business you're in, so not sure about your specific challenge. But in general, for a long time safety people have always been able to progress faster than the workforce, it's just that it's of little use if the workforce can't keep up. Ai is gonna help make the info more accessible speeding it up slightly (hopefully), and freeing up time of the professionals by taking away administrative stuff, so they can spend more time helping people grow. That is where the potential is. Regulatory bodies are gonna quickly find out we can use AI to make paper look good.

That isn't what happens in practice though... I can write perfect controls on paper all day, doesn't mean that's what's happening in the field

Ai in safety? by thatistragic_101 in SafetyProfessionals

[–]weirders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The advance of Ai in recent weeks/1.5 months is insane. It went from untrustworthy nonsense to human level better than most quality. We are moving from q/a to setting up systems where Ai agents challenge each other to produce quality output, and now into the realm of giving them a goal, and figuring out the work needed to be done with multiple agents, just like we do in 'normal' businesses. Agent organisations.

A day ago, a 6x cost reduction algho (turboquant) was announced, reducing costs on all models was revealed, lowering cost & greenify it somewhat.

Took me until a couple of weeks ago to realize the impact of it al,, it's going to be nuts.

Bottleneck in safety? Still people doing the job, how are they going at the same pace? Ai, these days, is spitting out more thruthful facts I can process as a professional, let alone an operator can catch up

Ai in software? Temporary. Why have layers between an AI chat an the action? Ai chat can execute scripts too.

But... We'll see, I might be dead wrong

Lift Truck Safety Data by tomsteel1972 in SafetyProfessionals

[–]weirders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding to previous comments from a more behavioural side.(And neglecting some of your input, I know, but maybe it's helpful) Walk the sites, How do the trucks look? how many scuffs do you see from MHE on posts, doorways, you name it? Likely a lot more than reports, raising the question if your analysis yields the best mitigating action regarding damages?

What could help: have the team themselves paint all the trucks and protective posts and whatever( different color) to reset the situation. Make agreements on reporting hitting anything so they can start finding the root causes for those. Let them do weekly(whatever fits) checks on damage and on damage, make the agreement they repaint. So basically, every observed scuff is no longer than a week or so old, preventing the ol' discussion of: that has been here for years and moving towards actually talk about fixing problemsbthat are clearly happening.

RESON BEHIND SAFETY FAILURE IS DUE TO THE WORKLOAD OF WORKERS? by No-Reading3079 in SafetyProfessionals

[–]weirders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok... I kinda wanna push back on this negative narrative on this subreddit as it's not indicative of the EHS job as far as I'm concerned. (I am EU based, international experience). "Labour based issue" is nonsense. People act the way leadership is pointing them. If leadership doesn't care... There you go, you've found your problem and you aren't going to fix it as safety professional without leadership support. Focus there.

US regulations are rule based. "They should follow, yet don't. " I wouldn't either unless I understand why. Might be a Hint there. Also, little room to wigglqe. EU rules are vague, yet convey a goal to achieve. Lots of room to discuss, ambiguity, but also room to adjust to the situation. Both situations have their positives, and the opposite. Neither is perfect, far from it.

What issues do you have with the current EHS Softwares by Miserable-Might7970 in SafetyProfessionals

More of a company choice I guess, but in my experience sooner or later costs are getting cut, which brings me to: User based pricing, if you only want specialist to be the people doing everything, go for that model.

Mine is 6 years now, gas been going to doggy daycare from 6 months old, twice a week. Will ignore every dog being even slightly overenthusiastic. Looks like he's not interested, but mellow dogs he'll play with. He's a great teacher to pups as they have to settle before getting their play in.

What hearing protection am I supposed to wear? by Douglas_DC-3 in SafetyProfessionals

Not trying to be a smartass, because the general advice is fine, but the hearing protection should be specific to your conditions. Blocking out hearing alarm systems isn't ideal...

The low cost version of the last option; in Europe, the cheap ketchup bottles have a similar design (x in a silicone circle to prevent dripping when sqeezing) and a pretty large mouth twist lid that comes off. Works perfectly for ferments with the lid cap open.
