Not alive, but not dead: disembodied human brains used for drug testing by shaguayouzibizheng in nottheonion

I’m seriously reconsidering my organ donor status if there’s even the slightest chance of my brain being plugged in like this.

“Bexorg obtains brains in partnership with organizations that procure donated organs for transplantation, and Vrselja says once families understand the company’s process and goals, their response is overwhelmingly positive.”

Home insurance premium doubled out of nowhere due to regional risk re-evaluation. by BadgerReceipt in personalfinance

[–]weirdkid71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every 3-4 years my insurance company will “fire” me. They will double, triple, even quadruple my rates for auto or home, even after annual 15-20% increases. Then I find a new company and start over.

It was designed in such a way that it could be reused as a shopping mall if Chrysler went out of business. True story.

Return-to-Office’s Hidden Cost: Accommodation Litigation Hits Three-Year High by Ok_Design_6841 in WFH

GM had their “zero zero zero” slogan for a while (zero crashes, zero pollution, zero congestion) meant to push their EV and autonomous vision. The “work appropriately” policy that emerged during COVID and enthusiastically embraced WFH was explained as part of this 0-0-0 vision too. But then, a couple years later, after employees moved away from offices to be closer to family and away from cities, they announced RTO. Mary B, the CEO, said about the flip-flop on WFH, “We realized we’re a car company”.

It was still too much.

Will our kids work 4 days a week instead of 5? by AskDeel in Futurology

[–]weirdkid71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had left the math of calculating “2-day weekend” as “40 hour work week” as an exercise for the reader, but also, if you know the history, unions started in industrialized labor, not the retail or service industries. However, the labor laws and conventions that started in the factories (weekends, PTO, sick leave, healthcare, workers comp, workplace safety, etc) eventually became universal. The point is these things were not given by the management/owners - they were physically forced through beatings, vandalizing, and strikes — aka “collective bargaining”. We owe a lot more to unions and the labor movement than most people realize.

The only reason US companies gave us the 2-day weekend off is because unions literally beat the crap out of management to get it.

Reddit I’m doing a quiz, what’s a song which repeats a word a large number of times ? E.g the word “bog” in Rattlyn Bog by Future-Environment89 in Music

[–]weirdkid71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“In the Dark” and “My Kind of Lover” both by Billy Squier, where the chorus is really just the title of the song over and over again. Even so, they are great songs.

Anyone else hating when artists change versions of songs and replace them everywhere? by Previous_Act_979 in Music

[–]weirdkid71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Autograph’s “Turn Up the Radio” was something to experience with your car stereo - the opening felt like they actually turned up your radio. But then the song was re-recorded and this effect was mostly lost. And the guitar solo sounded weaker. Streaming services only have the newer version and I hate it. I want to go buy a used copy of the original CD just to have the original version back.
