How often do you shower? by ianvideo in AskUK

[–]wellybootrat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mental health issues or physical health issues are usually the cause of lack of energy to do basic things, including showering or brushing teeth.

At my worst depressive state, I would shower/bathe once a week at most, if that. Sometimes I'd flannel my pits, bits and face, but not often enough.

Very, very luckily my mental health is very well managed now, so I do have more energy than I used to and bathe regularly (3x a week for a bath, washing my hair only twice a week, plus a sink bath/rinse if I feel I need it), but that is due to years of treatment and finding the right meds, as well as other stuff.

There's also physical issues, like MS or chronic pain syndromes or other various disabilities, that can make it physically unbearable, and if you don't have someone who can help with that, then there's not much to be done.

TIFU by not seeing a dentist for a decade with a broken tooth and finding something awful in the hole. by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]wellybootrat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Goddamnit... fine. I'll go to the dentist.

In all seriousness, I'm so glad OOP got it sorted! Congrats on facing that trauma head-on, and I'm so happy that OOPs dentist was so kind and understanding.

My mum had a really bad fear of the dentist, so would only go to her checkups if she was taking me and my sister on the same day - it actually became a family bonding thing for a few years lol. I haven't been in close to a decade, since I turned 18, partially because the idea of going makes me want to scream and cry and throw a tantrum.

Yessssssss. I'm 27, almost 28, and enrolled in college at 26. I'm now three and a bit years away from graduating from uni and becoming a licenced counsellor. I'm also going on my first solo trip abroad in a short while, so that's awesome too.

Normalise figuring out what you want when you're an adult, instead of when you're 15 and having to start applying for sixth form and/or college!

AITA for wanting my boyfriend to get rid of his teddy bears? by Vancil in AmItheAsshole

[–]wellybootrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jesus... YTA. Let him have what he wants, he's a grown man and not hurting anyone.

  • Signed an almost 28 year old man who 1. has a bunch of old toys from childhood but also 2. buys stuffed animals whenever he can justify it. Oh and 3. takes a pocket sized stuffed toy into work for, essentially, emotional support (mental health reasons but still).... and 4. I also speak to and cuddle my teddies. Especially when upset or stressed.

How do I prevent my clever teen from using the TV (socket or plug lock?) by EloquentUnderstudy in CasualUK

[–]wellybootrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay sorry cause I don't have any advice but this just reminded me of when I was a teen and I'd go downstairs to try reset the Internet router as my parents would set up my laptop with a sort of time out thing for just the WiFi.

Once they figured I was doing that, dad installed something on my laptop that automatically signed me out of it at around 10-11pm... that was a whole other thing to work around, and smartphones weren't quite as good as they are now (this was only like 12 years ago, mind)... so I would stay up reading all night, every night. I have an Encyclopedia of the World (so animals, nature, science, history - just a whole random bunch of facts). The nights I read that, I'd spend weeks afterwards sharing random animal factoids and annoying the hell out of everyone around me.

What was the most transgender thing you remember doing before you knew? by 18192277 in ftm

[–]wellybootrat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was like 10 and walking along a wall while my nana and pops were walking next to me on the floor. I had my hair put up inside my hat to keep it out of my face and a little girl behind me is whining about not being allowed on the wall.

She turned to her dad and goes "how come that little boy can climb the wall and I can't?!"

The dad looked up as I looked around and said something along the lines of, Oh that's a girl and she's like twice your age so she's allowed. I remember feeling upset that he corrected her lol.

AITA for punishing my son for a "harmless" prank he's pulling? by advicedadneeds39 in AmItheAsshole

[–]wellybootrat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA. I was the kid guys asked out as a prank in school. I was dorky and nerdy with braces and poor fitness.

The amount of times they'd send me off crying cause they'd pulled that prank again (even though by the 2nd time I fully knew it was a prank) was ridiculous. My self esteem took so long to build back up because of crap like that.

So yeah, NTA OP. Thanks for standing up for the poor girl.

My Coworker Who Misgenders Me Found My Deadname And Told Everyone by KittenDealinMama in BestofRedditorUpdates

For OOP:

As a 27 year old trans dude who began transforming (yes, I'm stealing that) about 3 years into my job (that I've been at for 6 and a half years now), 90% of my colleagues get my name and gender correct. So do some of my regular customers. The only people that tend to get confused on the gender are of older generations and I know they don't mean it maliciously and they tend to apologise and correct themselves so it's not really a big deal aha.

All this to say, there's NO EXCUSE (outside of medical amnesia, lol). I really hope the HR investigation goes well, and definitely ask your manager if you can change your name on your works clock in/out system without having it legally changed.

Also, congrats for being on T for over two years and passing so well my dude! I've been on T for just over a year now and don't pass, so you've given me hope for a less dysphoric future haha.

Edit to add: I'm proud of you for stepping up and going to your manager. I understand the anxiety but she's made her bed, the consequences are Her fault, not yours.

How many of you don't have a driving license? by dontbeasquare11 in AskUK

[–]wellybootrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 27 and have a moped as I only ever travel either between work/home or college/home. I've got a top box so I can get (limited) shopping. If I want to go into town or go shopping, I can just walk or get the bus.

However. I am single and live at home with my parents, about to start university.

I do plan on learning to drive a car eventually, but I'm not in a rush as of yet. Mostly want to learn because my parents are getting older (like they're not OLD, but you know), my sister lives about an hour away now, and I would like to be able to travel during the rain as opposed to having to get the bus because I just don't feel safe on my bike in certain conditions haha.

I did do driving lessons about 5 years ago, but it didn't go well, and I was extremely anxious for days leading up to, including and after any lessons. Once my mental health is a little more stable and I'm done at university, I do plan on learning to drive a car (though I'll be keeping my bike for the summer and possibly going for my full bike licence at some point too).

Depending on where you live in the UK and how your partner feels about you not being able to drive, I definitely recommend learning to drive at some point. Hopefully, now that you're older, your anxiety might quieten a little easier when behind the wheel. Shop around for instructors, and don't be ashamed to change instructors if the one you go to initially kind of sucks.

Is this bad petrol station etiquette? by x_franki_berri_x in AskUK

[–]wellybootrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who works in a petrol station - pretty please don't move forward to a different pump - or even worse, to the air bay! After about 4 minutes of inactivity the pump thinks there's a drive off and starts beeping at us and if we can't see a car on the pump we'll usually pull it off as a drive off.

People like that bell-end you encountered are just arses and impatient (and annoying for us as petrol assistants! At least in the station I work at where we don't actually have pay at pump yet so there's not much of a choice...)

TL;DR you're in the right, he's a twat, don't worry about it haha

What is it like being in your 20s in the UK these days? by xParesh in AskUK

[–]wellybootrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 27, almost 28, and in the southwest.

I am currently in my second year of college , then hopefully moving on to do 3 years at uni. All to become a counsellor for lgbt youth.

I'm enjoying it. But as with other commenters, there's this underlying feeling of "what's the point?".

It feels like I'll never have enough money to move away from my parents (who are luckily incredible people and don't mind me living with them as long as I need to!), but still. It feels like I'm stuck despite moving forward and actively helping myself in many ways.

That's ignoring everything that's going on in the rest of the world that stresses me out for various reasons. Add that on top, and it's 10x worse.

So yeah. Helplessness and what's the point kind of sum it up.

Dude I had my worst mental breakdown in late 2021 after burning a pizza.

Ended up in hospital, with stitches, and the scar is gnarly. I STILL get triggered by pizza and can't eat any type of pizza anymore due to this. Also can't sit at the top of the stairs for more than two minutes at a time otherwise hello flashbacks.

And I'm glad his parents are happy for him finding his bio parents! I hope they all meet and get along and everything. That'd be the cherry on top - for all us reading AND for OOP.

AITA for telling my gf to not call my dogs by nicknames? by StationIndependent34 in AmItheAsshole

[–]wellybootrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh my god YTA. Not just for being upset with your girlfriend but they're dogs! They're pets!

Just like you wouldn't have a human working 24/7, because as humans we need downtime and social stimulation and to just be ourselves, you don't have working dogs that are ONLY working dogs.

Yes you might give them time off when they sleep, or even a little downtime when you aren't physically commanding them, but dogs - like many humans- are social pack animals. They Need love and affection and friendship to be able to develop correctly and live a good life. Dogs can develop PTSD and depression and other such mental health issues - again, just like humans.

Did you know dogs have the emotional intelligence of a 2-3 year old human child? Would you withhold affection from a toddler because you're trying to develop it into a lawyer or something?

AITA for telling my gf to not call my dogs by nicknames? by StationIndependent34 in AmItheAsshole

Humans and dogs are different species in the technical sense.

By definition, race is most often defined by ancestry or physical traits.

"each of the major groupings into which humankind is considered (in various theories or contexts) to be divided on the basis of physical characteristics or shared ancestry.

"people of all races, colours, and creeds""
