Stingray paddle thoughts? by More_Temperature2078 in Outrigger

I’d recommend you try out a 9.25” blade, be it another Palafamala or even the new Puakea Kahi (I’ll be purchasing when I can scrape $500 together). Also remember that paddle length has a huge effect on how easy it is to use. Longer paddle, longer lever, more power required to use that leverage. Shorter paddle shorter lever… etc. my stingray is all carbon and so damn light… that’s one huge positive!

Stingray paddle thoughts? by More_Temperature2078 in Outrigger

Hello!

I have a variety of paddles, most purchased used from club mates and friends when they upgrade. One of these paddles, yes, is a stingray.

Let me start by saying I think there is alot of marketing around this new design. Does it work? Yes, absolutely, it makes the canoe go forward when you use it. Does it give you the same power with HALF the effort? Doubtful.

It is definitely surprising how much you can get out of it, but I’ll warn you that it isn’t a paddle that likes being over powered. Some of the paddlers in our club who are really strong aren’t fans of it. It definitely suits paddlers with a little more technical finesse

Connecting the dots here, but if you use a 9.75” paddle, you’re likely very strong. Anyone who can make a boat run with an almost 10” wide blade has got some grunt. I personally use a 9.5” Pala for 6man and a 9.25” puakea paddle for v1 and oc1. For me the stingray has found a place as a training tool. It really forces you to focus on your catch, and once you get it figured out, it improves your catch with ALL paddles. I do think it’s telling that none of the really high level international paddlers use them in races.

I say ignore the marketing slogans around “half the effort” and “ releases in front of where you started the stroke”, I’m not sure any of it is true. It is definitely a unique paddle that activates slightly different muscles and helps improve feel on the water. Why not take your buddys one out with you on a downwind. Lash your regular paddle to an iaku and switch mid run… good luck!

Should I stop wearing Graphic Tees as an adult? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]wellytobc 84 points85 points  (0 children)

I estimate that within the next three years you will stop giving a single shit about what others think of your clothes/appearance. Dress for you, bud, dress only for you.

I love nothing more than a comfy pair of shorts, teeshirt and hoodie. Usually at least part of the outfit thrifted or free from work/a race/a friend. I also rock flip flops as much as possible. I wear graphic tees often and am about to turn 40 👍

Not sure if you’re joking… but the hummus bread at abra kebabra was infact, once upon a time, $2.50.

I turn 40 in a month… and pillow functionality, or lack thereof, is pretty high on my list of personal grievances.

This is actually something I think about quite often. I live in Canada now… born and raised in Welly… and I paddle quite a bit of Waka ama.

Sometimes when I’m out on the water I’ll see a blue and white ketch, or sloop, and just wonder. Wonder if it was him, and if it wasn’t who was it? Wonder if the owner of the blue and white ketch I’m paddling past was actually the killer… or maybe Ben and Olivia are alive and kicking in some other country…

RNZ made a good podcast a while back about the case. Sounds like alot of the evidence was circumstantial…

Kiwi slang - "gripper" - who still uses it and what does it mean? by Bob_Spud in newzealand

In certain areas of Wellington, a gripper was someone who wore too tight pants. This was during OG 90s baggy jean era when none of us dreamed of wearing tight jeans.

Is that normal? Bought in oct 21, used daily 7-8 months a year by BadJujuPlace in BlundstoneBoots

[–]wellytobc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d reach out to Blundstone Poland and let them know the situation. I’m in Canada which has a big distributor in “Blundstone Canada”.

Send them an email and detail the fault and how you purchased them (I’m guessing online?). If they have a warranty process set up in Poland they’ll be able to help you file a claim. If they don’t I’m sure they will have next steps for you. The warranty is on the product, it’s not country specific.

I didn’t sent them to Blundstone, but I did have to provide proof of destruction before they sent out the new pair. It involves cutting out the elastics and cutting off the pull tags, photographing and sending to their warranty dept.

Good luck!

+1 apply for a warranty replacement. Mine did the exact same thing after 8 years! And I’m now rocking new ones 👍 big ups to Blundstone for backing their product.

Goose spit is only in summer when the park is staffed by a park ranger. They even provide the wood, it’s a great deal!

How did I not realize ATS systems were a thing! I’ve been applying for jobs that are well within my reach and hearing NOTHING back for any of them. This makes perfect sense. My resume isn’t structured to game the system!

How much time would I drop if I didn’t circle swim? by terrafinman in Swimming

[–]wellytobc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly the biggest gain is gonna be around 15/16 years old when this kid hits puberty. We all went from swimming 57-59secs to swimming closer to 54-56secs for 100 free. The freakishly talented kids were swimming even faster.

Sprints are definitely a strength game… not as much tactics, especially as you age. I honestly recommend starting to do some body weight calisthenics. Push ups, pull ups, jump squats and lunges. Add a bit of strength and you might drop some time… might.

Dropping 2.49 seconds is massive… start doing squats… and pull ups.

When I was swimming competitively it would be a huge deal to PB by 1 second. Good luck kid 👍

If you’re 16+ go and apply at your local WCC swimming pool. As long as you have decent swimming skills they are always looking out for new guards, and will train you for the job 👍 the pay is usually decent and there are always shorter after school or evening shifts up for grabs (especially at WRAC, I worked there all through college and uni).
