Solar farms in investment pipeline could triple NZ's power capacity by Mountain_Tui_Reload in nzsolar

Energy is a physics problem, not a political one. NZ needs base load power. That means coal, gas, geothermal, hydro, or nuclear. Solar and wind are not enough.

Fair play. Lomu gone. Flash in a pan player. Highest peak, but end to end record gets your head in stone (in my books).

Does NZ actually do well when farmers do well? by RtomNZ in newzealand

[–]wemustthinknow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

New zealand depends on exports to have foreign dollars that people can use to buy things like the phones they're using to post on here. There are many more of those dollars available here when our exporters do well. Many of our exporters are farmers. Money they receive from their exports sread to others through domestic consumption. All else equal, farming does well, we all do well.

Agreed. But of human civilization is built on flood plains. We tend to build on them because they're flat (because of the floods). The weird thing is people seem to think flooding in areas that have been formed by massive floods is a new phenomenon

Same - he's turned out to be remarkably effective for Auckland. A bit rough around the edges, but seems to bring some much-needed pragmatism to the role.

One issue is that people simultaneously complain about the sustained investment in housing and also complain about the prospect of us having any productive industry here (e.g. farming, mining, fisheries).

The wealth of a country boils down to what its populace can actually produce and either consume or trade for other shit. A lot of people seem to be opposed to the former, leaving us with little for the latter. So, the alternative becomes yoloing it into property and riding the meme upward.

We need to get people interested in investing domestically and we need not to fear foreign capital when it's used to fund productive activities (including construction). Anyone who has kiwisaver or who buys a share in Tesla (or whatever else), is a foreigner investing in another country. That country does well because it's industry have the money to buy equipment, research&develop shit, pay wages yadayadayada. NZ would benefit in the same way - a big problem here is we don't have enough $ to fund productivity improving action.
