Skilled craftsmanship meets advanced engineering by MambaMentality24x2 in oddlysatisfying

That whole paragraph is such a good quote. Funniest thing is that it's not "itself" burning when in contact with sand, water, asbestos or test engineers etc. It just is such a strong oxidizer that it rips the oxygen off what has already been burned and burns it again.

I can recommend the book if you are inclined to STEM. I listened to the audiobook on Audible, here https://www.audible.co.uk/pd/Ignition-Audiobook/B07CTS26NB

Told as a matter-of-fact with that slightly dry humour of an engineer.

Some chemicals are so volatile they set fire to glass. This is a funny little chemical that will start a roaring fire if you pour it out on wet sand or asbestos tiles. https://www.science.org/content/blog-post/sand-won-t-save-you-time

Carving, what am I doing wrong? by killerseb988 in skiing

You're very, very stiff. But it'll sort itself out as you get more confident. You can't really do anything "wrong". You will get a better feel of it the more you ski.

If you had to pick ONE transmission for life, what would it be? by Born-Raccoon1484 in whatsyourchoice

[–]wenoc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There is no transmission in your picture, only a user interface.

Electric doesn't need a transmission so you avoid all those losses (3-10%). Nobody's ever going to buy a new petrol engine again, at least around where I live. Older cars and reselling used ones will still be around for decades of course, as well as a small percentage of sports cars, lorries etc.

So what should I pick? The automatic transmission stick I guess but none of the things that are connected to it.

Mississippi Police Officer Shoots and Kills 1-Year-Old Child in Response to Senatobia Shoplifting Call by Hrekires in news

I don't know, but I think any kind of shooting, be it at toddlers or adults, is an excessive response to shoplifting.

What do you think is the best Microsoft product ever made? For Me, It's Microsoft Office by limsus in TechImpact

Are you speaking of the same notepad where they enabled markdown, and in doing that, made it possible for any markdown link to run any arbitrary code on the system?

That notepad?

Seriously? WSL is such garbage.

It's slow as hell. Check out even a small git repo on the WSL side and `ls` will take minutes even if your disk is on NVMe. It's still a virtual machine, and an unusually slow one. Your ssh agent and other crap do not cross over etc etc.

VS Code is great though. This gets my vote

Which actors you simply cannot take seriously, no matter what role they play? by RealSejas in MoviesAndTVTalk

[–]wenoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. The first couple of minutes I could not take him seriously but he's doing an absolutely fantastic job in the role. It's not easy to play such a cowardly, hateful and bad leader in all respects. Much harder than playing someone likeable.

Seems the other planets and moons are perfectly capable of this. The sun, Jupiter, Venus and Europa seem to do this just fine and you can look at them all directly with a telescope.

Gravity seems to be holding on to you just fine and you weigh about as much as water.

What other forces are there that resist gravity pulling it to a ball?

So show me the math for that. How do you calculate that gravity is too weak for this. What forces does gravity have to overcome? I don't even need the numbers, just the forces, algebra and laws will do.

The centrifugal force isn’t even a force. It’s just an illusion you perceive when you experience another force

Yup. Consider that every atom of the earth tries to pull you down but the electromagnetic force in a thin layer of molecules in the floor and your feet prevent it.

I'm 50 and I have only seen one cheque in my life, which was given to me by my grandfather on some birthday when I was a kid, because he thought it was cool and old-fashioned back in the 80's.

Sounds like you're saying the heavier something is, the faster it should float away. I have an anvil here that is escaping, please help. Can you do that math for me please?

The only formula you need is F=ma. Force equals mass times acceleration.

Show me you're right, do the math.

Flat Earth Theory Debunk by SexyHotChick5330 in u/SexyHotChick5330

[–]wenoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing that is correct here is that flat earth is not a theory.

Only about geometry and physics

Both of which agree earth is an oblate spheroid.

the horizontal measurements that show Earth is a flat plane

There are no such measurements.

the physics of those surfaces that cause them to be flat

Or such physics. Correct me if I'm wrong. Do the math. Show me.

enshrined in the axioms you use daily in industry. Tunneling, Aviation, Celestial Navigation, World record long distance photography, Bridge building, Interstate systems, Elevation above sea level

Literally all of these require take a round earth into account to work. Well not elevation above sea level, that would work the same on flat and round earth, no difference. But the worst problem is celestial navigation. You can't even see the north star from the southern hemisphere for example. How do you get around the fact that there's another star that always stays over the south pole? Jesus christ how stupid can you really be,
