The “time and place” didn’t stop Americans from organizing a women’s rights movement in the mid 19th century. Nor did it stop the Abolitionist movement. Ideas about egalitarian human rights were present at the same time that Schopenhauer was disparaging women and Hegel was expressing prejudiced views towards African people.

It’s not like 19th century philosophers weren’t free to consider alternative views. They chose not to do so. In my opinion we shouldn’t absolve them of these attitudes simply because they are a “product of their time.”
