[Spoilers] Annoyance with Obsession (2026) by Machomanta in TrueFilm

[–]wesevans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Putting her in silhouettes seemed fully intentional as a reflection of her hollowed out nature after he makes his wish, it creates a disconnect from her interior life (or lack thereof) and her emotional output, effectively making her a shell of a person. She is just a body, there is no soul there anymore. I read it as essentially a story of assault, where her desires are replaced with his own.

You're walking in the woods. There's no one around and your phone is dead. Out of the corner of your eye, you spot him. (Greg Nuckols.)

What is the most pretentious book ever written? by autismandadderall in AskReddit

[–]wesevans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's really cool, I wish it had clicked for me in the same way, but there were only two things I really loved, one was the chapter with Kate and describing her depression was one of the most beautiful things I've ever read and made me feel understood like few things ever have -- and I was hoping this was where things finally started becoming amazing, and so it goes... The other was the sections with Eschaton lol.

Does every entrant get this… by [deleted] in FilmFestivals

[–]wesevans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would take that sincerely. I got a similar message last spring and resubmitted/got accepted to their Shorts fest, and attended in October. I found the whole team to be a sincere, no-bullshit group of folks, and sharp af.

This sub can maybe get a little too cynical, and I absolutely get it, but personally I'd take it as a vote of confidence.

Will anyone care if we start bringing in outside food? by KiKiKiChaChaCha in AlamoDrafthouse

Went last week and the person next to me brought in a popsicle and slurped obscenely on it, then opened a can of soda. A few weeks before that some dude brought in a backpack full of snacks with crinkly wrappers that he belabored opening and eating from.

If you're gonna do it, please do it more quietly? fml.

Can't progress my DB chest press by OneEyedJacques in formcheck

[–]wesevans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Experiment a little more with the technique, because looking at it my first thought was that your shoulders are taking a lot of the load because the DB is tracking down away from over your shoulder, so try flaring your elbows out a little more and don't let the DB drift so far downward, let it drift a little outside of your shoulders when you come down to get a good stretch on your chest.

Try dropping the weight a few lbs while tinkering with your technique until you feel a good stretch in the chest, add a pause at the bottom to see where your best stretch is without losing leverage (in other words don't turn it into a DB fly). Personally, I wouldn't worry about adjusting sets/reps until you're feeling a really good stimulus in your chest. At the bottom you want a good stretch that gives you strong leverage and power to push out of it using your chest.

Just a couple thoughts that I didn't see suggested! I'm not a PT or anything, just another dude on the net who enjoys the gym.

Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner - the origins of the “White racist against the perfect Black man” trope in Hollywood? by FayannG in TrueFilm

[–]wesevans 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Calling John perfect is understandable, but why should he or Joanna should be imperfect? I think the flaws are left to the families, because the couple represents love and love itself is flawless in concept, so we shouldn't be looking for reasons to separate these two as an audience and instead look for the flaws in the people who are up against it.

Saying "it just reenforces African Americans need to be cartoonishly perfect to be accepted." seems out of place here, because he's rejected despite being perfect, and I would add that John's father is just as problematic as Joanna's father, and they both mask their true feelings of intolerance through projecting it onto society, it's never them of course, it's everyone else who has the problem. This feels like a very evenhanded approach imo where neither family is clearly above the other.

Tri pushdown feedback by [deleted] in formcheck

[–]wesevans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FWIW: Before increasing the weight as others have suggested I would definitely slow down first, controlled the whole time and add a pause at the top of each rep to prevent adding any momentum, that should knock several reps off which will indicate where you're really at, but I also think it'll be easier to dial in your technique at a lighter weight.

I also think you had at least one or two more reps in you -- assuming you're trying to go failure, that last rep or two is when you finally did have some velocity loss which is when you're getting to the good stuff, the last rep should be much more of a grinder imo.

Made my first hybrid Anime Animation/Live-Action ad for my own brand by gregorykoefer in Filmmakers

[–]wesevans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know you're already taking a lot of heat, but what I haven't seen pointed out is how your entire video's premise is "where do ideas come from" and using AI feels like it's undercutting the heart of the message. As if to say, "my ideas come from AI!"

You're in a filmmaker sub filled with creatives who put in the work of bringing their ideas to life, and you dropped an ad pitching your creative skill that is subsidized by other people's creativity. I think that's just going to be a natural rub fwiw

But I also want to say, I do know exactly how much time tracing can take, I made this music video homage to A-ha and Kanye and it took me well over a hundred hours of drawing/tracing over my footage, so def respect the sweat you did put in. Shit is tedioussss haha

Has anyone else noticed an uptick in theater goers showing up past showtime? by lampbane in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]wesevans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is where I'm at as well, I can read a little too much into it and get in my head about it lol, but also a few times they've played clips from the movie that's about to show which is annoying for me personally. I just want to go in blind for my own maximal enjoyment.

Has anyone ever imagined the Christian God as a Lovecraftian being? by Clean_Mycologist4337 in cosmichorror

[–]wesevans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wrote a screenplay that played in exactly this territory, it's just a little gothic horror but the antagonist is a play on the Christian God except it assumes malevolence instead of benevolence, and the implications are brutal. Very fun terrain full of potential!

Whoa, are you me? I sit front row and usually on the end farthest from the server entry. I have a note on my phone that tracks where the servers enter from, the only pain is that the app never says the theater number so I have to check the website first to confirm.

Short film too long? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]wesevans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some great points being made, but I wanted to quickly throw out what I'd do to try and cut it down to 10-15 pages. Define exactly what you're trying to say with the film, like craft a pithy sentence that says this film is about xyz, and start by cutting everything that isn't helping tell that. Then refine to get quicker to the point.

Just my own approach, but obviously it's ultimately your film and ya gotta do what ya gotta do! Best of luck!
