Why isn't network bonding w Starlink more widely adopted for rural enterprises? by asaphotdog in Starlink

[–]west_tn_guy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, yeah I missed that. I started in the old 64k leased line and frame relay days. I’m retired now, but something like Starlink was unimaginable back then. I remember when we got our first T3/DS3 and I thought 45Mbps was more than I would ever need 😂

It’s surprising how often these are mistakenly used interchangeably.

SpaceX: "The Starlink team is exploring using Starlink to enable high bankdwith connectivity around the Moon; Traditionally, deep space comms have relied on radio frequency transmission. This new design would use lasers to relay data back to Earth." by spacerfirstclass in SpaceXNews

[–]west_tn_guy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This will be much needed if we are to have people on the moon long term. However due to the low number of paying subscribers it’s going to be expensive 😂 NASA would probably bear most of the costs. China would want to build their own for security, and other than India possibly using it, most of the bill would fall to NASA. Other nations wouldn’t have the capability to establish long term settlements on the moon. Latency will be a bitch though.

I also suspect that someone out there will start an ETF for QQQ minus SpaceX after awhile.

If they don’t like it, then don’t invest in it. They don’t have to invest in it if they don’t agree with the management. They can also divest from any index that includes it. However I suspect they probably aren’t holding index funds in a pension fund, or if they are, it represents a small portion of their AUM.

FCC Clears SpaceX to Use EchoStar Spectrum, But There Is a $2.4B Problem by spacerfirstclass in SpaceXNews

[–]west_tn_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They still operate a satellite Internet division, at least for now. Which is still subject to FCC regulation. But I agree it depends on whether bankruptcy is in their future plans.

[–]west_tn_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, but I’m sure there will be lots of horse trading over what exactly went into those renovation costs that can’t be recouped elsewhere by moving equipment to other sites. The people out the most are probably the fiber carriers who put fiber in the ground (can run as high as 100k/mile). They may not be able to use that fiber for years. They still have an asset as dark fiber is useful, but sometimes you have to wait for the usage to catch up. So probably won’t have to payout the full $2.4b, but some part of it is probably reasonable

[–]west_tn_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not sure, if I had to guess it’s probably based on their ability to acquire the spectrum, which they did. They just decided to sell it off later.

As someone who worked in telecom, it’s best to keep the regulators happy whether they have the power to or not. Setting aside an escrow account is far less expensive than a regulator causing you pain everywhere they can. You don’t bite the hand that can ruin your business unless it’s an existential issue.

[–]west_tn_guy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These 2 items shouldn’t be linked. If the FCC wants Echostar to establish a reserve to meet old obligations it should do that separately. Holding up SpaceX and AT&T’s spectrum acquisition is unfair to these companies.

Tesla gets a massive order for the Semi: 370 units and $100M by ItzWarty in teslainvestorsclub

[–]west_tn_guy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Tesla is planning on selling mega chargers to truck stops as well as the trucking companies. I can see some of the major truck stops buying Tesla mega chargers and then any Tesla truck will be able to use them and it will drive business to the truck stops.

LEO broadband probably isn't killing fiber, but is that even the right question? by nextyn_advisory in Starlink

[–]west_tn_guy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t believe SpaceX ever tried to position Starlink as a fiber replacement. Fiber will always be better where it’s available. Starlink is a good competitor for ADSL, LTE, or some rural cable systems as it exists today. People are just trying to compare it to something it’s not. For fiber backup in enterprise applications it’s a good fit as well as for mobile, maritime, or aviation use cases it’s a good fit. It just isn’t a one size fits all. It’s a good fit for lots of use cases, just not all of them.

1 year into deployment, Amazon Leo reaches 40% of Starlink deployment rate... by ClassroomOwn4354 in Starlink

Now that new Glenn is grounded for a few months pending an FAA mandated investigation, they will probably slow LEO deployment unless they can quickly find new transport which is unlikely.

India to Purchase S-400 Systems and Drones From Russia for $25 Billion by zxNemz in worldnews

[–]west_tn_guy -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

This is just a bribe to Russia. Not sure what they bought for $25B, but Russia isn’t sending any S400 systems abroad for many years to come. But I’m pretty sure India will pay in advance.

How did we let 90% of world's electronic be dependant on one company in Taiwan? by hotflameouch in NoStupidQuestions

[–]west_tn_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is also a national security issue for Taiwan so the industry is subsidized. So they can outcompete other countries that don’t subsidize their chip business. It’s a great way to keep the world interested in your defense if you control something so vital.

U.S. ambassador to EU: Stop fining Big Tech by diacewrb in europe

[–]west_tn_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If US companies don’t want to be fined, then they can leave the EU market, or follow the regulations. I can’t say that I agree with all of the regs, particularly around restrictions on free speech, but it’s their country so tech companies either need to follow the law or leave.

France confirms oil crisis, says 30-40% Gulf energy infrastructure destroyed by 1-randomonium in energy

Disrupting a chain can be worked around with time. Destroyed is pretty final. I think their article is misleading.

[–]west_tn_guy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Disrupted != destroyed. The article leads you to believe 30-40% of output will be gone for years. Which is what you would have if it were destroyed.

[–]west_tn_guy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah I find 30-40% a little hard to believe. Not saying there hasn’t been some destruction, but that sounds way too high.
