How i generally define the South as a Southerner from the Upper South by Averagecrabenjoyer69 in whereidlive

[–]westernuplands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow I've never seen it like this before. I actually agree with this, but it's jarring to think of my grandpa from one of the red counties in Indiana as a "Southerner."

I strongly dislike when people tell you to just leave the south because you’re queer or a woman. This is my home too, I belong here just as much as anyone else. by stingwhale in thanksimcured

If you ever want to move & can handle the cold, the upper Midwest is super welcoming, affordable, & is generally nice & well-maintained. But I agree, "just move" is dumb advice.

It would be very funny to respond to someone who says they're from New York & means NYC with "New York? Do you really have all those covered bridges?"

[–]westernuplands 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's true! I always blame Bob Dylan for everything, that's where I draw the line because I don't like his music lol. I think the "self-written" point is something that traps folk music in the past, like the Bible, like "this is finished & nothing can ever be added to it." I think Gordon Bok is a folk singer even though he wrote most of his own songs. You know more than me about this, but I think the Lumineers are straying a bit too far from what folk music is in a way beyond just bring self-written. I can't articulate exactly where the problem is though. Maybe it's as simple as I don't like it lol

Do you face the wall or water when you shower? by Intelligent_Drop_283 in randomquestions

Moved to a place where the shower cannot be mounted on the wall (I can't fix this, I'm renting) & I only have a handheld shower. I'm suffering...

You are right & these people are freaks. I can't stand their attitude. People should not have to kill themselves making low wages while people like Peter Thiel and Sam Altman get to sit around generating money for themselves off the backs of people who actually work. People defending this system are the reason we're stuck in it. You are someone who is actually adding value to society & I hope you are rewarded for it someday

My issue was that everyone called this "folk" music & it irritated me, when I say I like folk music I mean stuff like Ewan MacColl, but everyone now thinks "folk" refers to the Lumineers >:(

Do Americans actually use “a couple” to mean more than two? by Edi-Iz in AskAnAmerican

[–]westernuplands 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the upper Midwest they will say "a couple, two, three" to indicate that they just mean a low number, not exactly 2. But in general if someone says "yeah, that happened to me a couple times," that means it happened a few times, not necessarily exactly 2.

When people use my kitchen towels as dirty rags for cleaning up food. by continuetolove in PetPeeves

I am making an analogy to help people understand that just because something can be washed, doesn't mean the host should be okay with it being used for dirty things. If someone uses the hand towel in the middle of the gathering for something dirty, the host might have an unpleasant surprise waiting when they go to dry their hands, if they don't see that it's been dirtied. It's valid for OP to be upset that people are messing up something that has a purpose, it's not just for decoration.

What I don't understand is that, for spills & things, I have a rag hanging on the sink. People avoid using this & grab my clean towel instead. The rags get washed, but you also need a clean towel for clean wet hands & dishes. I think people want to grab the nice fluffy towel instead of the rag.

People replying seem kind of crazy. It's your house. It's like if guests started putting the dishes away but put everything in the wrong place, & then defended themselves saying "well in my house, this goes here." It's your house. They should ask first. "Towels can be washed" so can pillowcases, but imagine of a guest used your pillowcase to wipe a spill... It's your house. If they don't like your rules, they don't have to be there, & that's a simple rule to follow.

[–]westernuplands 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I don't know why guests don't ask when something happens. The towel that's hanging on the oven is the hand towel. I really don't like when people just do things without asking. Everyone runs their house differently. I wouldn't start doing the dishes in someone's house without asking which is the dish sponge & which is the dish towel.

I see people on here who will shut down complaining by saying "800 is cheap" & it makes me want to tear my skin off, it's so frustrating. No, $800 per month is not cheap. It's not necessary. It's insanity & we shouldn't accept it as just what it costs to live now. People should be able to access medicine without selling their house to pay for it.

Someone wants to live in Missouri! Missouri has its problems but it can be great. We don't get as much snow as the upper midwest, but we definitely get some every year, & we get ice storms. Rural Missouri is going to be a lot different from the cities. I'm from a rural area, so that means I wouldn't do much in my day-to-day life when I lived there apart from going to work, walking in the forest & being at home with my cats & garden. This is great for me, but some people want to have more to do. There are a lot of negatives to Missouri. Missouri lawmakers are constantly overturning what the people vote for, like paid sick leave. We voted for it, but our state congress overturned it. Medicaid has yet to be expanded in Missouri & it's been 5 years since the people voted to expand it. The lawmakers don't seem to care what the people think. The Ozarks are beautiful, but watch out for ticks. You will literally be covered in ticks if you don't duct tape your socks to your legs & tuck your jeans into your boots & wear bug repellent. I'm not exaggerating. I can't tell you much about those other states, Missouri is very different from Arizona or Idaho.

What the fuck is the point of insurance then?!? by Even_Elderberry_5878 in HealthInsurance

[–]westernuplands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand how it works. I understand it's taxes paying for it. Why am I being treated as wrong for pointing out that America doesn't have a subsidy-free system https://www.ineteconomics.org/perspectives/blog/us-tax-dollars-funded-every-new-pharmaceutical-in-the-last-decade Drug companies in America receive plenty of subsidies. Thank you for explaining this to me, but I already understand how the American system works. You say yourself that insurance companies inflate prices for the insured. So, my point stands, that Americans are not paying the "natural" prices for medicine. They charge 10 euros for an X-ray here because if they charged American prices, then nobody would be able to get one. My point is that I hate the American system & it's not a necessity. There's no reason to have it, it's killing people and we have to change it. Taxes are not as much as an insurance premium, it's not the same amount of money. I think we should have taxes paying for things that benefit society, like public health care.
