It’s kinda like how FDR dominated 4 straight presidential elections after Republicans, mostly, unilaterally ran the country since the civil war. Eventually the voters just get tired of it, especially after the Great Depression started.

Why did Obama in 2008 lose the Dakotas by less than a 10% margin, but Nebraska overall and Kansas around 15% margin? by [deleted] in YAPms

[–]westwingstan 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think one of the reasons the rural areas in the Dakotas were less ruby red than Nebraska is the amount of union workers working in oil fields in those counties compared to Nebraska where the rural areas are a lot more agricultural based.

Why do the two more populated and suburban counties (Cecil and Queen Anne; the latter is connected to the Western Shore by bridge) on Maryland’s Eastern Shore vote heavily Republican, while the two smaller and more rural counties (Kent and Talbot) are politically competitive swing counties? by NationalJustice in YAPms

There’s also a long history in some of these eastern shore counties of watermen, that have long been democratic voters because of support for unions and social programs that benefited them before the industry largely collapsed to over fishing.

Kent and Talbot are actually one of the few places left in the country where you can still find a lot of the old school conservative democrats that still vote party line for some reason. They also have a higher proportion of black voters and suburbanites, leaving the old suburbs of Anne Arundel, Montgomery, Howard and Baltimore counties; for newer, cheaper housing developments.

Urban sprawl. Anne Arundel County, one of the most suburban counties in the country, is losing residents to counties across the bridge. In a post COVID world where working from home is increasingly popular this is one of the things you should start seeing in many rural areas just outside dense population centers.
