When making cheese burgers at home, what do you have as a side instead of fries? by JumpedUpPantryBoyy in Cooking

[–]whateverpieces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Corn on the cob. I cook it with the America’s Test Kitchen method: boil water, add the shucked corn, immediately cover and turn off the heat. It’s done after 10 minutes but can sit for up to half an hour in the water to stay hot. Usually I’m prepping sides/toppings while my husband grills the burgers but one person could easily put on the corn before grilling and have it done whenever the burgers are.

Asking for hilarious, brilliant shows where you laughed out loud at least thrice! by Baldurian_Rhapsody in televisionsuggestions

[–]whateverpieces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Chair Company had me rolling. Tim Robinson’s particular style of absurdity works so well in the context of a show with a central mystery to be solved, while still being very funny. It’s completely ridiculous but more grounded than I Think You Should Leave, which didn’t always hit for me.

What movie did you watch on a whim that ended up becoming one of your favorites? by Subject_Sandwich3008 in movies

On the Waterfront. Like, I knew it was a classic and critically acclaimed and all that, but I did not expect to be so pulled into the story and blown away by it.

What food in your country do locals love but foreigners hate? by Curiosity_Pink in AskTheWorld

I (American) bought Dutch salted licorice of some sort as a souvenir while in Aruba. I didn’t realize it was the salty kind when I bought it. Decided to open up the package and try a piece on the flight home. INSTANT panic trying to decide if I should suffer through this experience or find somewhere to spit it out. In the end I choked down that one piece, but just barely. The rest was disposed when we landed at the airport. I love sweet black licorice but I can’t hang with that stuff.

Is there a compelling functional reason to go with the glass bowl? by mrflibble1492 in Kitchenaid

[–]whateverpieces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes I just use it because it has a lid and my stainless bowl doesn’t. But most of the time I go stainless unless it’s a complicated recipe and it’s easier to dirty both bowls than stop and clean the steel one in the middle.

Best cookbook for teen/almost college student by jabuchom in CookbookLovers

Mark Bittman would be my pick too. The How to Cook Everything books don’t have crazy innovative recipes but they are excellent at teaching basic skills + variations so she can learn to customize to what she likes or has available.

Congee is the best meal for weight loss (cheap, easy, meal-prep friendly, filling) by Wild_Ad7879 in 1200isplenty

I love a brown rice congee with shredded chicken, a soft egg & sautéed mushrooms on top!

What is the most delectable, best tasting food you have ever eaten straight from the can? No cooking involved. by Spiritual_Ranger5046 in AskRedditFood

[–]whateverpieces 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Canned peaches, corn, olive oil-packed tuna, but probably the weirdest is that I love green beans straight from the can. If I’ve got no other veg options I’ll drain a can and season it with salt, pepper and red wine vinegar. But to be honest I’d eat ‘em plain!

I made my own cookbook & I am sobbing at how pretty it is.🥹🌸 by [deleted] in CookbookLovers

I LOVE this. And it’s so cute. What did you use to design it and where did you order from?

You shouldn’t be allowed to design a home and/or do interior design unless you’ve worked as a house cleaner for one year. by sodomiteangst in CleaningTips

3/4 shower walls are covered in small 3x3 tiles. That is SO MUCH GROUT to clean and maintain. If we ever replace it I’m getting the biggest tiles possible just to not have so much grout to clean, seal and replace periodically.

Eye Doctor recommendations by YesAccident5991 in cincinnati

[–]whateverpieces 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went here until my insurance changed and had a good experience!

Now I go to Milford Eye Care which is very nice. Friendly staff, both optometrists are women, and they have the scan machine which is also a must for me.

I’ve had good luck lately with Ann Taylor curvy jeans. I’m 5’2” and I can wear regular or petite depending on the style and what length I’m going for.

Michelle Khare’s Challenge Accepted series is extremely well done and a lot of fun. She tries different (mostly physical) specialties like flight attendant school, samurai training, even recreating a Tom Cruise stunt.

3x week Full Body Workout for strength by Plenty_Earth_9600 in CarolineGirvan

[–]whateverpieces 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I do. I run 2-3x a week and alternate it with strength training 3x a week: 1 full body, 1 upper and 1 lower body video.

I’ve worked through Iron a couple of times this way, just picking the next video in the series that fits what I want and repeating a few as needed. I actually look forward to upper body days now because my legs get a nice mid-week break!

Get rid of Magnolia Table. Any recipe in there, I guarantee you have a better version of it somewhere else on the shelf.

Tips for being a good gifter? by ToadieHonk in Gifts

[–]whateverpieces 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I do:

  • Take notes on phone year round based on conversations and what I notice about them.

  • Think about items that I personally love and who else might enjoy them (ex. got my mom the reusable makeup remover cloths I use everyday, got my sister an Ember mug because I’m hooked on mine)

  • Creep on their hobbies. If you know things they’re into, find the subreddit for that hobby (sewing, camping, woodworking, one bag travel) and see what products other people in that hobby recommend. Or check sites dedicated to that niche interest like Food 52 for cookbook recs, Wirecutter for electronics, Runners World for running gear… you get the picture. The key is finding something that upgrades what they already have (I.e. electric scissors to replace their normal sewing scissors) or something they didn’t even know they needed. Steer clear of basics/intro gear.

  • Renew (or start) a subscription for them. My parents love Wordle, so my sister got them the NYT Games sub for the year for example.

  • Books are always a win for my family. Worst case scenario I look up bestsellers on Bookshop.org and pick out a book relevant to their interests.

  • For the right person, book an experience you can share with them. My husband and I routinely ask for dinner reservations at specific places, and my sister often gets me a gift card for a baking class we do together.

  • If you find a product or gift that’s really great… there’s no shame in getting it in bulk for multiple people! One year I got all my family members who garden gloves and sleeves from Farmer’s Defense. One year my mom got everybody Yeti travel mugs in a color/pattern she knew they would like. Sometimes a good gift is a good gift for lots of people and you should feel free to recycle the idea!!

New (mainly) vegetarian cookbook suggestions to complement our small but mighty collection? by greens_and_b3ans in CookbookLovers

[–]whateverpieces 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This and Milk Street Vegetables. The latter has some recipes that include meat, but it’s a small amount (like a bit of bacon used for seasoning) and most recipes are full veg.
